I noticed in a photograph taken around 1912 or so that the floor of the ring seems to consist of what appear to be wooden boards. When I did a quick check of the phrase "On the Canvas" in old newspapers, the first instance came up late in 1922.
Any idea when padded canvas came into play in most boxing rings? I'm guessing someone had to die from hitting his head on the boards before the idea was considered.
