Re: Devin Haney vs. Vasiliy Lomachenko | Sky Sports - 20 May 2023
seems like im an odd man out, but haney close felt right to me. it was super nip and tuck, but haney's shots were better quality i thought, really digging in some good body work especially. he did look vulnerable in close though, and loma tagged him much easier in that range than i expected. kambosis fights flattered haney';s defense a bit
basically, 9 or 10 rounds of that were 55-45 type rounds, very hard to split and i dont think a robbery. an example of a fight that is very good without needing loads of punches or knockdown drama
one thing though - haney was shaky in the 11th, but then loma backed off and did nothing in the last 45 seconds. then lost the last round not being all that active. haney's strong 12th may have been the difference on the cards between the win and draw

I think rounds like the first two were just too tight to really feel like you could pick a clear winner. The judges are generally never doing 10-10 rounds so I force myself to pick a winner and I decided to be generous to Haney since that was what I thought the judges would do, ended up with a 5-2 scorecard to Haney after 7 rounds. He won the last round which would mean he would only need to win either the 8/9/10/11. I gave Haney the 8th and gave Loma the rest. 115-113 for me. If im scoring fairly and not taxing Loma for the possible corruption involved then I definitely would have had Loma winning.

Not a robbery by any stretch
But, 116-112?
C’mon!!!!!!!!

Loma won that, thought it was going to be a draw but that 116-112 was a farce.

I see scorecards like 114-114
Mike C had it 115-113 but said a draw would be ok.

Moretti giving the 10th to Haney is crazy.

Scored it a draw. Haney wasn’t at his best but he done enough to steal some of the close rounds. Loma should have went for it in round 11 when he had him hurt. Losing the 12th threw it away for him.

Re: Devin Haney vs. Vasiliy Lomachenko | Sky Sports - 20 May 2023
Had Lomachenko winning 115-113 but knew it was close, not a robbery because there was a lot of close rounds and spells where it was a chess match, Haney the bigger guy landed the more harder looking punches, the rights to the body worked well and the looping head shots, Lomachenko still a wizard at 35, doesn't seem have lost much foot speed the way he darts in and out, his lead right hook is still lightening, he tagged Haney with it repeatedly
Lomachenko finished stronger each passing round looked like he was breaking Haney down with his pressure and accuracy, a lot of shoeshine combinations keeping Haney occupied, Haney had a good last round though, I enjoyed that though, high level sh1t

Gutted that I missed this and also gutted Loma wasn't able to pull it out of the bag. Couple of questions for those of you who watched it:
1. Sounds like Loma was well on top in round 11 and didn't capitalise on this in the final round, when it could have made all the difference. Fair comment? Just sounds a bit like the lopez fight in terms of him taking his pedal off the metal just when it mattered most.
2. Is this one of those occasions where the nature of the loss means the defeated fighter's stock actually goes up i.e. Loma could arguably have won against the younger, bigger fighter? Guess this partly depends on what Haney goes on to achieve, but interested to hear what others think

I thought it was close overall, Loma definitely hurt Haney a couple of times and I think put in more work. Haney when he landed was eye catching.
I had it Loma by one, maybe two rounds but would not have been totally upset with a draw at the outside limit. But 116-112 to Haney was rubbish, no way.

In the Lopez fight the major problem was in a late start. Against Haney Loma was dictating the fight since the start.Deserter wrote: ↑21 May 2023, 07:12 1. 115-113 Loma
Expected a split decision either way. Unanimous for either man seemed way off to me.

Sorry, should have been more clear - i was referring specifically to the final round, when historically some truly great fighters have been able to find an extra gear just when it matters most. By contrast, on a couple of occasions including last night it sounds like Loma eased off.DrDuke wrote: ↑21 May 2023, 07:18In the Lopez fight the major problem was in a late start. He said in the post fight presser that he gave the 12th away because he felt he won the fight. Bad fight iq and bad cornering.Deserter wrote: ↑21 May 2023, 07:55Sorry, should have been more clear - i was referring specifically to the final round, when historically some truly great fighters have been able to find an extra gear just when it matters most. Loma is a hall of famer for sure but I never bought into him being a great P4P fighter on par with Floyd/Pac/Duran/Whitaker/RJJ and so on. He's not on that level and never was but still a great fighter.
