Boxing From St. Nicholas Arena – Five episodes (including August 6, 1956 finale, the last program aired on DuMont)
Boxing With Dennis James – Three episodes from 1949-1950, possibly including episodes of Boxing From Jamaica Arena (1948-49), Amateur Boxing Fight Club (1949-50) or Boxing From Sunnyside Gardens (1949-55)


Anyone have any idea of the content of these tapes?

Anyone have any idea of the content of these tapes?

Buzz I have a list of all these fights. They were on the UCLA website where I believe they reside without any hope of ever being seen. If they are not listed anymore I have a list somewhere.

A couple of years ago,a web site was selling ' historic archive footage'
of the three only known episodes of the 1920's serial 'Daredevil Jack"
starring Jack Dempsey.I saw parts of those episodes as samples on-line,
but I think UCLA had the seller remove them.
I think they may have also been selling historic archive footage of Dumont boxing.

I have the list of the Dumont Fight Series that are at the UCLA Archives, much as Evren B Stated the list of these broadcasts were on the UCLA Film Archives website which I downloaded for research purposes and I am confident the information is still there for anyone who chooses to seek it. A couple of interesting things that I noticed about those films are 1) some of the films have not been transferred over to videotape or DVD at this time (Based on the poor condition of the films I believe) so even if you were to book a time with the university to visit the UCLA Film Archives in hopes of viewing some the films you would not have access to certain fights in the Dumont Collection based on this fact 2) Some of these fights have already surfaced and are part of the former Big Fights Incorporated now ESPN CLASSICS Fight Film Collection. I have a few of them in my collection namely Floyd Patterson vs Wes Bascomb which is a highlight version (1 reel) maybe UCLA possesses the entire fight , Danny Giovanelli vs Gene Poirier 7/23/1956, Walter Cartier vs Garth Panther II 7/27/1953 . Some of the fights that I would like to see from their list are Frankie Ippolitto vs Stefan Redl 8/13/1957,Lulu Perez vs Bobby Bell 8/19/1957,Jimmy Herring vs Marvin Edelman 10/5/1953,Randy Sandy vs Lee Sala 7/7/1953...

Hello Evren,

There might be a couple of other Kinescopes on the list which have surfaced and are out there however their list is quite impressive and also includes the second Jersey Joe Walcott vs Ezzard Charles fight. Now I am not sure how much of the fight they have but with most of the Dumont Films we are talking about it's 16MM so this might be the complete Kinescope. The problem is how to get the film and that's where the trail ends. I e-mailed and spoke to a fellow that works at the U.C.L.A. Television and Film museum and he said the same thing that I wrote previously "If you are going to be in California schedule a time when you can visit the museum and you can will be allowed to watch the films that you are interested in of course if they have been converted.
Doesn't lead up to much hope for us collectors!!

It would be great to get hold of them. New footage keeps on turning up on 8mm and 16mm though...it is truly amazing how footage that was thought to neverhave existed gets unearthed in someones attic!!

WOW, I lived about 5 blocks from Eastern P'kwy Arena during those days and saw most of the weekly
boxing events listed above and those not listed. Two events stick out in my mind today. One was in
1950 when a neighbor of mine Harold Green flattened young Joey Giardello with a terrific left hook and a couple of years later Joey Maxim won a close decision from the then unbeaten Floyd Patterson.
Eastern Pkwy Arena was known as the "House of Upsets", and Teddy Brenner was the matchmaker...

Beaujack, Joey Giardello always insisted that Harold Green hit him after the bell had rung and his corner vehemently protested and wouldn't let Joey continue unless he had extra time to recover from what they thought was a foul and when he didn't come out when the bell for the next round was rung they declared a TKO win for Green. In a return bout a few years afterwards Joey won an easy decision over Green also at Eastern Parkway. Giardello always said the only legitimate knockdown he suffered in his career was from the light hitting, but very tough Pierre Langlois. Joey had one of the great chins in boxing history (as I am sure you are aware of) and of course Harold Green was one rough customer as well.

p,honestly I cannot recall now a scintilla of a LATE left hook landing on Giardello's chin in the 6th rd
that ko'd Joey. I and my dad sat about 8 rows back when Green landed that hook and it caught
Giardello flush on the chin. There certainly was no controversy that night I can now recall. I met Harold Green a few years before he died and I brought up that fight...At any rate Giardello did beat Green in a return bout and of course had a greater career. Too bad that the most exciting fighter
I ever saw Rocky Graziano [pre Zale] and Giardello never hooked up...I think Joey would be too
wily for my man Graziano...

"An explosive left hook, followed by a short right, landed A SPLIT SECOND before the bell ended the sixth round (Joey said it was a split second AFTER the bell and he had started to look away) dumped Joey Giardello."..........[Joey said Green broke his nose in the fight]. c.h.

I would love to get ahold of these tapes. I did a 23 page story on 'NEW YORK CITY"S LAST ETHNIC CROSSTOWN RIVALRY -1957-1960." Where Jimmy Archer, Bronx; Ronnie Cohen, New Rochelle; Tony DeCola, Red Hook; Tony DiBiase, Astoria; Bill Flamio, Bronx; Johnny Gorman, Greenpoint; Frankie Ippolito, Bronx; Eddie Jordon, Bedford Heights; Eddie Lynch, West Side; Al Milone, Coney Island; Danny Russo, E.New York; Gale Kerwin, Valley Stream; Stephan Redl, Passaic. Peter Schmidt, Yorkville; and Henry Winchman, East Side met in a 68 bout round robin of crosstown battles. "Almost all of these matches were presented at St. Nicks and televised on the DUMONT TV network most were savage slugfests in front of their neighborhood supporters who set off firecrackers, threw raw eggs, set loose pidgeons and engaged in minor brawls between the opposing factions."....I still remember watching these brawls as a kid on monday nights. I never forgot these guys.

Ah, what memory's some of those names you post bring back to me such as Jimmy Archer, older
brother of Joey Archer and Tony DiBiase, who I saw win the golden gloves WW title before he turned pro...Many of these guys fought in the golden gloves in NY before they turned pro. Tough guys in a tougher era...

I have several of these films. These are some of the best quality kinescopes Ive ever seen.

The Brooklyn Daily Eagle said Green landed his punch on Giardello "just as the bell sounded." The article also implies that Giardello was ahead at the time of the stoppage (which isnt surprising to me).

Not surprising to me either because Joey became one of the top middleweights of his era whilst Harold Green's claim to fame was he beat a rising Rocky Graziano twice...

Has anyone here actually gone to the UCLA archives and watched films of the Dumont broadcasts? I know that the late J. J. Johnston had a connection there, and I recall the late Tony Fosco telling me that UCLA made some sort accommodation to Johnston, who was, among other things, an actor.
