Josh Kelly defends WBO International super-welterweight title to WBO No.9 Gabriel Corzo

Josh Kelly’s assault on the world super welterweight title begins on June 24, in Newcastle when he faces Argentinean Gabriel Corzo, live and exclusive on DAZN worldwide.

Wasserman Boxing has joined forces with the global broadcast giant to drive Kelly’s world title pursuit, which starts at the Vertu Motors Arena next month.

Kelly is ranked No2 in the world and knows victory over Corzo will put him within touching distance of a shot at undisputed champion Jermell Charlo.

But the unbeaten Corzo, who sits at No9 in the standings, has global ambitions of his own and intends on ripping up the script to leave Kelly’s world title dream in tatters.

The show also sees the return of heavyweight contender Nathan Gorman, a second pro contest for the super skilled Codie Smith as well as the latest outing for the future of women’s boxing in this country, Chloe Watson.

Newcastle heavyweight Steve Robinson collides with Franklin Ignatius in a battle of big-punching big men that is not to be missed, and the popular Ben Marksby continues his super lightweight journey.

Josh Kelly said: “A win over Corzo on June 24 in Newcastle will put me within touching distance of a shot at the world title.

“I'm thrilled to be teaming up with DAZN and fully intend on producing a stellar performance that will be seen around the world on their platform.

“Corzo is ranked No.9 in the world and is a good fighter, but I am going to deliver a display that makes the rest of the division sit up and take note. You don't want to miss this one."

Gabriel Corzo said: “Make no mistake, on June 24 in Newcastle, Josh Kelly’s world title dream ends and mine gets closer to being a reality.

“I am not travelling all the way from Argentina to make up the numbers. I want my shot at the world title and Kelly is standing in my way of that, so he must be moved aside.

“I hope Kelly’s fans are prepared for the upset that is coming.”

Kalle Sauerland, Global Head of Boxing at Wasserman, said: “Josh Kelly is ready to take on the world and everyone at Wasserman Boxing is thrilled to team up with DAZN on his journey to the top.

“We all watched in awe at Josh’s display against Troy Williamson late last year, where he showed, over 12 faultless rounds, just how gifted he is.

“The unbeaten and dangerous Corzo is up next on June 24 in Newcastle, but Josh Kelly, ranked No2 in the world, is an exceptional talent and I strongly believe we are going to see something extra special, live on DAZN.”

“DAZN are proud to be teaming up with Wasserman Boxing, adding more big nights of boxing to our best-in-class schedule’, said Joe Markowski, CEO DAZN North America.

“In 2023, we are determined to add to this and grow it in order to deliver for fight fans. We look forward to following Josh Kelly every step of the way on his road to a World Title shot. Tune in June 24 to watch a great night of boxing, live and exclusive on DAZN.”

Kelly, nicknamed ‘Pretty Boy’, is embarking on one of British boxing’s most compelling comeback stories of recent times as the 29-year-old continues to rise from his defeat to David Avanesyan

The gifted 2016 Olympian was written off and dismissed by many following the stoppage loss, but December’s masterclass British title win over Williamson capped the first stage of his return and proved the critics wrong.

And on June 24, live on DAZN, the Sunderland AFC fan has the chance to take a huge step towards securing a world title shot.

They only gave Wasserman like 4 fight nights.

I don't think CH5 can pay the purses.. DAZN can keep doing this, not bad for the subs. get more for your money.

Wasserman will do this with Eubank too. No way he fights on CH5.

Good thing with DAZN if they haven't been tied down to any particular promotions.

Who knows. If you listen to Kalle talking about viewing figures then they’d be mad to get rid of it.

I think it’s more likely that they have a low budget for shows and Kalle thinks Kelly is ahead of that.

Won’t be long until we find out I guess but as a DAZN subscriber I’m pleased that they’re looking further afield for shows rather than just sticking with Matchroom.

They're doing well to show as many shows as they can. US/Canadian cards too
There's a MVP prospect card in the US next week as well

Jake Pauls promotion.

Hopefully they will put Codie Smith on live. Pointless been on terrestrial if they're not showing your best prospect.

I haven't seen Corzo yet. I'll have to do a bit of research.
Any opinions on the actual fight, as opposed to the TV channel chaps?

Josh Kelly’s opponents nickname is “el terrible” and I think that’s fitting given the fact that he isn’t in the top 200 on boxrec…

I've watched a little bit of him now, and he is reasonable.
I didn't see any power, but he has some skills. Not enough to trouble Kelly. This is one of those "0" handover fights I expect, with low risk of Kelly getting dropped.
Huge upset if I'm wrong

He isn't as bad as you would imagine from a boxrec sub 200

Actually showing a range of shots and combinations, some footwork and head movement. Just no power to trouble Josh. The perfect "0" to sacrifice.

Press Release | Qais Ashfaq vs. Liam Dillon British Title Clash Added

Newcastle will be the battle ground for a British title fight.

Liam Dillon and Qais Ashfaq are to clash for the vacant super featherweight crown at the Vertu Motors Arena, on Saturday June 24 as part of the bumper show headlined by world champion-in-the-making Josh Kelly.

Live on DAZN, North East hero Kelly puts his world title dream on the line against the highly ranked Argentinean Gabriel Corzo, who has already cranked up the tension by promising a “war”.

And now the Wasserman Boxing event has added Dillon vs Ashfaq, in a scrap which has all the ingredients to be a show stealer.

Dillon is the unbeaten and dangerous Londonder who is coming off a career-best win over Joshua Wahab and the 27-year-old plans on upsetting the odds again, but this time against former Olympian Ashfaq.

Leeds favourite Ashfaq is the former Team GB stand-out, who won medals at major international tournaments, boxed at Rio 2016 and is back in form after suffering a shock defeat in 2020.

Dillon (12-0-1) said: “Qais Ashfaq is a mountain for me to climb but I was the big underdog in my last fight and people had written me off, but I caused a big upset.

“After my last win I was still the English champion and so I asked my team if we could push for the British. The British title is one I have always wanted but I didn’t ever know if I had the ability or know-how to win it. But after my last fight, I know I am ready.”

Ashfaq (12-1) said: “Liam is a very tough kid and while he may not have my technical ability, he will be in my face for the whole fight.

“But he can’t out-box me and this can be a very straight-forward fight for me, but it is also for me to lose.

“But I believe this is the reboot of my career and winning the British title will lead to many more big nights, and I genuinely believe I will still become a world champion.”

Wasserman Boxing can also confirm that Chloe Watson will step up to eight rounds for the first time, with victory edging her closer to title contention.

Watson, the unbeaten former international amateur star who is trained by Ricky Hatton, tackles Belen Valdebenito in Newcastle and plans on making yet another statement in her second contest of the year.

Hometown heavyweight Steve Robinson locks horns with Franklin Ignatius in a thunderous collision of big punchers that nobody is expecting will go the eight-round distance.

Big shame Kelly isn't continuing with his fights on Channel 5 :verysad:

Channel 5 always seems to cover boxers for no more than a few fights or a certain stage of their careers. Good while it lasts I suppose :maybe:

Wasserman Boxing announce that Josh Kelly (13-1-1, 7KO) has signed a new multi-year deal with the company.

Josh Kelly said: "I am really happy to have signed a multi-year deal with Wasserman Boxing.

"I have loved working with Kalle, Nisse and the whole team and know that, with them in my corner, my career will continue to go from strength to strength.

"Winning the British title against Troy Williamson, at a packed-out arena last year, is a moment that I will never forget, but now we are ready to take on the world, starting on June 24 in Newcastle. Let's go!"

Kalle Sauerland, Global Head of Wasserman Boxing, said: "Josh Kelly is one of the hottest properties in the sport and there are so many massive domestic and international fights to be made for him, so we are thrilled he has put pen to paper on a new multi-year deal with Wasserman Boxing.

"Promoting Josh has been a dream but make no mistake, we are only just getting started with this man.

"In Newcastle on June 24, we start to take Pretty Boy to the next level."

Press Release | Mairis Briedis Withdraws From July 21 Card, Isaac Lowe Added To Event

Isaac Lowe is the latest addition to the undercard of Lee McGregor’s homecoming world title fight next month.

Live and free-to-air on Channel 5, on Friday, July 21, McGregor battles it out with Mexico’s Erik Robles for the vacant IBO world super bantamweight title.

The Wasserman Boxing event, delivered in association with Ladbrokes, Numan and Infinitum Entertainment, sees McGregor box in front of his home fans for the first time since his pro debut, five years ago.

And supporting McGregor’s big night, is an undercard which now includes Lowe taking on Jonathan Santana in a featherweight dust-up.

Lowe said: “This won’t just be a typical Isaac Lowe performance, I am going to show people I am a good boxer. People know I have the heart of a lion and I come to have a fight but there are other ways to win a fight. I provide value for money, there is guaranteed entertainment in my fights. I am far from finished and I plan to put on a good show for the fans.”

Unfortunately, a small set-back in training has forced the former cruiserweight champion of the world, Mairis Briedis, to withdraw from the Meadowbank Sports Centre event.

Briedis said: “I was really looking forward to fighting in Edinburgh on July 21. Sadly, I have suffered a small set back in training and so I won’t be ready in time. But I can promise my fans that big fights are coming later this year, and they will put me, and my beloved country of Latvia, back at the top of the sport.”

Also, heavyweight prospect Matty Harris as he aims to become the first man to stop Kostyantin Dovbyshchenko.

Sultan Zaurbek, the world ranked Kazak with 10 knockout wins on his record, takes on former European super featherweight champion, John Carter.
