Who would people rather Calzaghe fight

Post by Macanuff »

Joe Calzaghe has today said that he hopes that Glen Johnson wins his fight with Clinton Woods as he sees Johnson as the bigger fight for himself in the future.

Does everybody agree with this????

I think that although Clinton seems up against it against Calzaghe he always seems to find a way to succeed and he is progressive.
He has developed into a World Champion from the fighter who was easily beaten by David Starie earlier in his career.

I think a Domestic clash between the two is the best for british boxing, and also has the potential to even become a thrilling series i.e Benn v Eubank

What does everyone else think????

Calzaghe should fight the winner of Kessler-Beyer.

Right now, Mundine. If he wins, the winner of Kessler/Beyer.

The Winner of Kessler and Beyer but they have to fight Andrande afterwards and I think Mundine is also in the contract.

Definitely the winner of Kessler/Beyer.

Really find it hard to get even slightly exciting about the prospect of Calzaghe v Johnson/Woods.

If I had to choose between Johnson or Woods then I would prefer Calzaghe to fight Woods as it could gain some more interest from the british public.

I really don't rate Johnson that highly, he beat a very poor Roy Jones and then split a fight with Tarver who was then completely shown up by Hopkins... I rate Adamek and Erdei (and maybe Tiozzo) ahead of Johnson but I'm probably the only one who does.

Kessler vs Beyer winner. Let the Light Heavyweights sort themselves out a bit before Calzaghe moves up.

I personally will find it hard to consider the Woods vs Johnson winner the #1 - as Tarver beat Johnson and Edrei and Adameck's resume isn't too bad either.

If he can persuade Hopkins to comeback then problem solved.

hopkins-calzaghe could be an epic, legacy-building fight for calzaghe, whose chances would be better at 168 than at 175!!

Yes but there's no need to snigger, he just dominated the number one lightheavy and showed something like his best form ever. :-? Go on give me a laugh and say that a win over Mikkel Kessler would look better on Calzaghe's record than a win over Hopkins... no wait don't tell me you actually think Kessler is the better of the two

Erdei is the No 1 Light Heavy. Tarver was just playing off the Jones wins when Jones was never linear and he vacated that Weightclass. So he had to prove himself there all over again.

Calzaghe would beat the crap out of the current Hopkins who has no work rate, but it took a green fighter like Taylor to take adavantage of.

Dude, what are you smoking? Erdei is ranked #1 by whom? (You seem to imply that he's some kind of consensus #1 - yeah, right.) Erdei's has *one* win against a legitimate top-5 light-heavy, Gonzalez, and since then he's been fighting the usual Kohl-picked stiffs. Sorry if we seem unimpressed. But hell yeah, Erdei would certainly be a big step up from the guy he's actually fighting next.

So let him prove it. JayCee's best win is over a dangerous but extremely green and one-dimensional Lacy, and suddenly he's a worldbeater, an all-time great ranking up there with the likes of blah blah blah. You know, resting one's laurels is perhaps OK - if you have some legitimate laurels to rest on. I'm sorry, wins over guys like Brewer and Lacy don't constitute greatness - they only indicate that the potential is there. But again, I'd love to see hime fight someone of the caliber of even the aged Hopkins, or the short-to-pieces Jones. But since that's not gonna happen...

...It's clear that the fight fans of the world have spoken, and since Joe is determined to fight stiffs, they demand Calzaghe/Veit III!

Based on his progression in the first 2 fights, Veit might actually last the distance in a third fight.

(Unless he neglects his altitude training again, like he did before his first trip to the nose-bleed inducing elevation of Cardiff, at least according to our local expert on high-altitude pugilistic physiology, that Dr. Damien something-or-other.)

depends

If Kessler beats Beyer, he is the closest calzaghe has to a peer and a full 168 unification would be awesome.

If Woods beats Johnson in a clear or emphatic way, this will be a huge fight for britain. Woods' physical strength is tremendous now, his boxing is clean and accurate and his size formidable.

Johnson is the most likely next foe, providing he beats Woods which I don't think he can.

Erdei is the most skilled technician at light heavy. If you want to see Calzaghe vs a master boxer, this is the fight. Erdei has some solid wins - Gonzalez, Garay twice, Sahnoune and Ulrich.

Briggs is by far the hardest hitting light heavy. He may win the WBC light heavy crown next month.

Tiozzo is the fighter who is for the taking. Since some good 2004 and 2005 wins, he has allowed his weight to balloon and now he looks a bit old. Still has the WBA title but is the most likely to cash in. Very good fighter on his night.

Adamek, who fights Briggs and holds the WBC 175 title, probably has the hardest jab north of Kessler and benefits frome extreme toughness.

Either way, it looks like the next fight has a very good chance of being a big one. I don't know what the objection is to Calzaghe-Johnson. Johnson has been highly regarded on this forum for a long time now. He's a genuine world beater and a fight with Calzaghe would be a great action fight. Ppl would turn their noses up at a Woods fight as well, but if Woods can beat Johnson then he's more than earned a big fight.

Spot on. There are now sufficient options open to Joe to enable a meaningful and popular clash.

He should fight Kessler (or Beyer IF) before considering stepping up to 175. Otherwise he simply won't have achieved very much at 168.

hope to hell that woods beats johnson then, that will make him look elsewhere for a big fight

I for my part would like to see Calzaghe-Woods (after Calzaghe-Kessler)

Too bad he had his last night in 2004 and isn't due for another anytime soon. Joe would get laughed out of boxing if he took that fight.

Fabrice is good, but the Frenchman is always in big trouble when the weight troubles get the better of him.

Seeing as he last fought at 195, I'd say the weight got the better of him. Not to mention the guy shouldn't have the WBA belt if the WBA actually adhered to their own rules.

I just read something interesting. Calzaghe said he'd prefer Johnson to beat Woods because a) it'd be an easier fight to make and b) it'd be an easier fight. says he prefers fighters who come to him.

I think a Woods fight would be damn interesting. Calzaghe must be anticipating some real problems going after the bigger Woods.

Tiozzo would've been a great fight in early 2005 or early 2004 (whenever it was that he beat Michalczewski).

Calzaghe should face the winner of Kessler v Beyer before moving up, otherwise his claim as the #1 supermiddleweight can and will always be disputed.

That's funny to see a fighter openly say he wants the easier fight. I'm sure he meant easier because stylistically they clash. But the way he said it was all wrong.

Of course he prefers fighters who come to him, the guy has never gone outside of the UK for a major fight.
