Where do you see boxing going?

I was trying to rack my brains last night of any potential boxer or fight which would get me excited, I honestly couldn't think of 1, I used to look forward to a Naz fight, a Mayweather fight, Pac Man fight, GGG fight, When is the new boxing star coming along? When are the mega fights going to happen again?

I think the one good thing that might come of these social media types is that they are making boxers look like idiots and prima dona's demanding so much. These instagram types are showing you can easily make tens of millions of dollars without all the horseshit. Boxers will soon be without any excuse for not fighting each other.

The impression I get is that it's more popular than it was, say, 15-20 years ago.

I looked it up a while ago, Football is by far the most followed sport in the UK (about 35-40% of people).

Then you have Cricket, Rugby and Tennis (between 12-17%).

Then Boxing and Golf (both at around 10%).

Everything else (Horse Racing, etc.) is below that.

Unfortunately it didn't include MMA for comparison.

It's a survey, so they ask a sample and extrapolate out from that.

Regarding tennis, that's the figure for men and women. Also it's just asking if you watch it, it doesn't ask how often. So a lot of people may just watch Wimbledon once a year.

I think in 50 years time or less all sports (especially football) will have a lot less followers .
When I was a lad growing up in the 80s , it was very rare if you didn't play football in my area .
Now a lot less kids are playing ( jumpers for goalposts in the park ) . We'd play all year round in the dark in all weathers .
Kids have more distractions nowadays and when they grow older will have zero interest in sport and I think football will be the major loser .

If boxing was killable it would have died a long, long time ago. Truth is, the pure raw appeal of boxing will see it is around for generations and generations into the future, and some will love it and others will moan.

Sadly, some parents still think the best recourse for such situations is to take their child to learn taekwondo or something equally useless for schoolyard self defence. I guess seeing your child high kick fresh air is a bit more glamourous than having them taught to punch someone in the nose.

I worked with this guy years ago , believe me he's made an absolute killing , come grading time everyone gets a belt , providing they pay just takes your brown belt and gives you the next one , then sells yours to the next one , when he fails a familly , alls they have to do is stop coming and paying and thats an assurance they will go up a grade next time, at a grading cost of course . Thing is though your correct , he offers fun and confidence to the geeky who love it and actually believe there the second coming off Chuck Norris , Has long has they pay everyones a winner , .

There is a sucker born every minute and usually the kid who most needs good quality training comes from a family who wouldn't recognize it if they fell over it.

In my 20’s, I was more involved in the sport and people were saying then that boxing was dying. I’m nearly 50 now.

You could argue it’s bigger than ever. Dedicated channels, record PPV figures and record purses.

For the purist it isn’t as good. Remember those stacked cards of the nineties. UK support events featuring world champions before switching to the US for another stacked card. I’m getting giddy at the thought.

But in terms of mass media appeal it’s still up there. It might not be many people’s #1 sport over the course of a year, but nothing beats a big heavyweight title fight for excitement.

That is the jewel in the crown. Everyone suddenly becomes an expert and walks home throwing one-twos.
