Casey Gacic, 1970s middleweight - ever see him fight?

Post by Joson »

Boxing fans from the 70s will remember this guy's name. He made some noise in East Coast clubs in 1976-77. He drew with Mike Rossman and Christy Elliot, beat Leo Saenz, and lost to contenders Mike Colbert, Boogaloo Watts, and Edgar Wallace. The Wallace fight he came within a point of winning.

Between 1969 and 1971 Gacic finished near the top in several national GG and AAU tournos.

What was his style? What assets did he carry in the ring?

Ive seen at least one of his fights. I have his complete fight with Wallace on film. He was sort of a mauler, at least in the Wallace fight, kept Wallace on the ropes most of the time mauling and punching. Not too polished but put in a lot of effort. Imagine a less polished version of Dave Tiberi with leakier defense and long, stringy, balding hair.

That's very interesting. I had always assumed Gacic was a tricky, hit-and-run type who pulled better guys down to his level. A tactical fighter. But your info indicates the opposite.

Did he have any degree of power?

I knew CG and trained with him briefly. He was a complicated man and a great fighter.
His philosophy was just to keep punching. Not hard shots but to just keep active.
He believed in calling his own shots and training his way. Casey was certainly an enigma.
He was a cool cat that lives life his way and was one of a kind in a very good way.
I would like to hear from him if he is still out there 312.721.7725 text or leave message
