Edgar Berlanga vs. Jason Quigley Set For June 24 In New York City

Edgar Berlanga is poised for his ring return.

The popular Nuyorican super middleweight will next face Ireland’s Jason Quigley atop a June 24 DAZN show from Madison Square Garden’s Hulu Theater in New York City. Berlanga confirmed the fight while on site for Saturday’s DAZN show from Boeing Center at Tech Port in San Antonio, Texas.

Berlanga (20-0, 16KOs)—who fights at the venue for the third straight time—will end a career-long 54-week layoff as he fights for the first time since signing with Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing earlier this year. The 25-year-old Brooklyn native previously fought for Top Rank before the two parties amicably split after a three-plus year working relationship.

A good chunk of the inactive stretch was due to a six-month suspension dealt to Berlanga following his ten-round, unanimous decision win over Alexis Angulo last June 11 at MSG Hulu Theater. The ESPN headliner took place on the eve of the 65th annual National Puerto Rican Day parade held in midtown Manhattan, the first time Berlanga topped a boxing event on that weekend, carrying out a tradition created by promoter Top Rank in 2005.

The extra attention paid to the event didn’t bode well for Berlanga, who was caught on camera attempting to bite Angulo during the seventh-round of their super middleweight bout. The act went undisciplined by referee Ricky Gonzalez in real time but was immediately brought to the attention of the NYSAC in the days after the televised event. Berlanga was dealt a retroactive six-month suspension for the incident which ended December 11—one day after Top Rank’s final show of 2022 which functionally shut down Berlanga’s ring campaign for the year.

It also marked the end of their 11-fight stretch together, as Berlanga and his team—including high-powered manager Keith Connolly—opted to ink with Matchroom Boxing. The obvious plan will be to build him as an attractive option for undisputed super middleweight champion Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez.

For now, Berlanga will get reacquainted in the ring against a familiar name but a longshot underdog.

Quigley will enter his second straight fight at super middleweight following an unsuccessful bid in his first major title fight in his previous U.S appearance. The veteran fringe contender from Balleybofey, Ireland was blasted out inside of two rounds by Demetrius Andrade, who made the fifth and final defense of his WBO middleweight title fight in their November 2021 DAZN headliner from SNHU Arena in Manchester, New Hampshire.

The setback ended a three-fight win streak for Quigley (20-2, 14KOs), all of which took place in the U.S. He returned home and to the win column in a ten-round decision over sub .500 Gabor Gorbics on April 1 in Dublin, which marked his first fight as a full-fledged super middleweight.

Press Release | Adam Kownacki, Reshat Mati Added

Hometown heroes Reshat Mati and Adam Kownacki return to action in the Big Apple as they star on the undercard of undefeated super middleweight sensation Edgar Berlanga’s clash with Jason Quigley at The Theater at Madison Square Garden in New York on Saturday June 24, live worldwide on DAZN.

Mati (13-0 7 KOs) will taste his first action of 2023 and does so in an all-New York clash with Brooklyn’s Wesley Ferrer. Mati picked up his first pro title in Mexico in October, outpointing Eduardo Rodriguez in Mexico City to land the WBC Youth Super-Lightweight strap. The Staten Island starlet will box over the ten round distance for the second time against Ferrer (17-1-1 8 KOs) who crosses the East River in a bid to ruin Mati’s unbeaten record in the biggest fight of his career to date, and first over ten.

“I can’t wait to be back in the ring after my latest layoff,” said Mati. “I’m looking forward to going out there and winning in style and win over the entire crowd at MSG.

“I will have huge support from my Albanian fan base on June 24 and I’ll definitely look to make a statement that night in the 140lb division.”

“This is a great opportunity from Matchroom to fight an undefeated guy like Reshat,” said Ferrer. “He will bring all his Albanian fans to the Garden, and that will only add more fuel to this match-up, because I know my fans will be there to make it a hell of a night for every fan in attendance. Move over, there’s a new sheriff in town.”

Kownacki (20-3 15 KOs) is eager to get back to winning ways, and the popular Brooklyn-based Pole does so in ten round action against Joe Cusumano. Kownacki has history with the famous New York venue as an amateur and a pro, and after a pair of defeats at the hands of Robert Helenius and a loss in Brooklyn against Ali Demirezen in July. The 34 year old wants to get back to his lofty position he held prior to those defeats, and is targeting a spectacular win over Cusumano (21-4 19 KOs), to get himself back in the Heavyweight mix.

“I am excited to be back at Madison Square Garden,” said Kownacki. “MSG is where I had my first success as a boxer winning the NY Golden Gloves, and my fifth pro fight where I came out victorious and started my run to become a top five Heavyweight. MSG is will once again be the starting point of something special for me, as I resurrect my career.”

"We're are excited for this opportunity to fight In the world's most famous arena, Madison Square Garden," said Cusumano. "Adam is a tough fighter but I'm preparing for war on June 24."

Mati and Kownacki’s bouts will lead into a main event that sees Berlanga (20-0 16 KOs) fight for the first time under the Matchroom banner after penning a multi-fight deal with Eddie Hearn in February. The Brooklyn-based Puerto Rican ranked #4 with the WBO and IBF, and #6 with the WBA, fights in the Theater for the third bout in a row following wins over Steve Rolls and Roamer Angulo in March and June respectively, and there will be echoes of the spectacular April 2022 showdown between Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano with the fans are treated to another Puerto Rico vs. Ireland clash as Ballybofey’s Quigley (20-2 KOs) looks to steal the show.

Berlanga post hype is the most dissapointing thing to watch. Dude isnt remotley exiting without the 1st round kos, his fights are so lackluster and he looked like he had 1/8 of his power. His Technique isnt good hes just there boxing, and thats it.
The talk of canelo is pretty ridicoulos aswell, cant string together solid wins at the top.
He shouldnt be concerned about canelo but the contenders signed to matchroom like Pacheco and Saunders and even Ryder would beat him.
Hes the Super-middleweight Josue Vargas, hyped to levels he was not capable of an then looking terrible on word level, to be fair Josue at least got to championship level, berlanga barley beat an old alexis angulo who got a beating of a lifetime by Benavidez.
I used to quite like Berlanga and his fights, but ever since that biting against angulo that empty talk against the elites hes become a bit of a joke to be honest.
But best of luck to him

Serms like a weight bully too. The fights I’ve seen look like a light heavyweight fighting middleweights and super welterweights.

I am not sure Berlanga is the popular ticket seller he is made out to be. He seems to have many celebrity friends but the hype died down.

I expect Quigley to outbox him and then get stopped by the referee if there is a cut (even a tiny one) or the first or second time he is wobbled.

Kownacki, wonder if he was watching Joe Joyce on the weekend?
Because the Joyce fight sure did remind me of him.

I think Quigley outboxes him then gets stopped. I don't think Quigley can survive 12 with the big hitters unfortunately :bag:

Must win for Berlanga. He will have to get a job as a cab driver, if he gets beat by this cab driver. :OhYes:

So they are feeding Adam "The Face Shield" Kownacki to a prospect eh?
Should be interesting.
The main event should be fairly even. I wouldn't bet on either.

Berlanga needs to stop playing to the crowd and focus on what he's doing sometimes.
Hype is part of the sport to a business level, he shouldn't let that infringe on or stunt his boxing style growth.

Berlanga is a boxer that likes to be in control.
His jab, the way he spins off into incoming attacks.
The way he dictates the pace of the fight.
The jury is out.
His pace is steady and he doesn't take many chances.
