Press Release

Jesse Rodriguez and Sunny Edwards, who collide at the Desert Diamond Arena in Glendale, Arizona on Saturday December 16, are promising fireworks.

The unbeaten pair meet in a long-awaited battle to determine the top dog in the division, with WBO ruler Rodriguez and IBF king Edwards defending their titles for the first and fourth times respectively and both appearing in their first unification bouts.

Rodriguez (18-0 11 KOs) will return to the state that he landed his first World title back in February 2022 when he defeated Carlos Cuadras to land the WBC Super-Flyweight strap. The San Antonio star defended that title twice with wins over Srisaket Sor Rungvisai and Israel Gonzalez before becoming a two-weight champion on hometurf in April by seeing off Christian Hernandez, and the 23 year old is excited to be meeting Edwards in the winter.

“I want to thank Matchroom, Teiken and my whole team for making this fight happen,” said Rodriguez. “This fight will allow me to showcase my skills and prove to everyone that I am not only the best Flyweight in the world but one of the best fighters in the world period.

“I am excited to be back in Arizona where I first became a world champion, and I will be 100 percent ready to put on a show on December 16 and become unified world champion.”

Edwards (20-0 4 KOs) finally gets the blockbuster showdown that he’s been craving after becoming the IBF champion in April 2021 with a trademark classy win over Moruti Mthalane in London. A pair of successful defenses in Dubai followed in December against Jayson Mama and in March over Muhammad Waseem before victory in defense number three followed in his adaopted Sheffield hometown over Felix Alvarado.

The 27 year old had a successful debut under the Matchroom banner in June when he saw off spirited Chilean challenger Andres Campos in London, and Edwards is looking forward to proving he is the best in the division on his first fight in America.

“I’m looking forward to being involved in one of the biggest flyweight world title fights in boxing history,” said Edwards.

“It’s the real #1 versus the real #2. I would like to thank Eddie Hearn, Frank Smith, Matchroom Boxing and my team for getting me in this position, and I’d also like to thank Bam and his team for accepting the fight, and I am really looking forward to becoming one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world on December 16 in Arizona.”

Very nice.

Flyweight division pretty much on lock with Matchroom so hopefully Edwards, BAM Rodriguez and JS Martinez all get it on and then maybe step up to take on the guard above.

Bam is going to get outclassed badly. Very limited and overhyped fighter. He will be doing well to land a glove on Sunny.

Pill is pretty one sided lol…. Does this reflect reality or does it reflect people’s dislike of Sunny?

Sunny Edwards: "Bam Rodriguez Will Bring The Best Out in Me"

“I think me and Bam have set the tone in the lighter weights and a few more need to happen now,” Edwards told Talksport.

“I feel with me - and it’s shown in my performances - the better the opponent, the better I am. I know it’s kind of cliche. Because what I do is kind of dancing with the opponent, I let them put the input in and I go around them. If they’re really good then what I do becomes really, really good to beat them.”

“I think Bam is a great fighter and he’ll bring the best out in me,” he said “There’s a lot of respect there because I see the similarities in our backgrounds. We both started young, we both frequented pro-gyms from young, probably sparring longer rounds than most people our age, sparring men from early. We both had older brothers around the same age that we watched and sparred. I know I did.

“Even without fully knowing Bam’s story I can pick up on things. I know he’s gonna be proper because I can put myself in his shoes. For me - and I hope it doesn’t offend him - he’s like the American version of me and I’m the British version of him. We’ll both take any fights, we’re both jumping down the weights.”

Junaid Bostan To Be Added, December 16 In Arizona

Junaid Bostan will fight in America before the end of the year.

The 21-year-old has raced to 7-0 since turning professional just last March and he will be rewarded for a scintillating start in the paid ranks.

Bostan, who notched up his sixth stoppage as recently as last weekend at Sheffield’s Utilita Arena, has been confirmed as an addition to the supporting cast of a show topped by a world title unification clash.

‘Star Boy’ secured his second quick finish of the calendar year on the undercard of Leigh Wood’s heroic come-from-behind stoppage victory over Josh Warrington to retain the WBA featherweight crown.

The Grant Smith-trained youngster took on Scottish Area super-welterweight champion Corey McCulloch over eight and ended the fight early.

And as a result, he has been handed the opportunity off a lifetime and is set to box on December 16 at the Desert Diamond Arena in Glendale, Arizona.

The appearance will come on the undercard of his stablemate Sunny Edwards’ defence of the IBF flyweight world title against WBO champion Jesse Rodriguez as ‘Bam’ also puts his title at stake.

Galal Yafai, the undefeated Olympic gold medallist who is 5-0 with four inside the distance and holds the WBC International title at the weight of the clash between Rodriguez and Edwards, is understood to have been earmarked to box on the same bill as he looks to advance his burgeoning ledger ahead of a potential world title tilt himself in the early part of 2024.

I am looking forward to this, when I saw Bam month or so ago he looked way off, so fingers crossed it happens. I do enjoy watching Sunny, such a clever boxer to watch.
