Sources: Charles Martin to step in on short notice vs. Jared Anderson

Jared Anderson will fight former heavyweight titleholder Charles Martin on July 1 in Toledo, Ohio, after Kazakhstan's Zhan Kossobutskiy was forced to withdraw with a visa issue, sources told ESPN on Tuesday.

Anderson (14-0, 14 KOs), a 23-year-old rising star in the heavyweight division, has finished his past six opponents inside three rounds, including a second-round stoppage of heavyweight trial horse Jerry Forrest in December.

Now Anderson will step up to the toughest opponent of his career, albeit on short notice, in his first ESPN main event. The bout will be a homecoming for Anderson, who hails from Toledo.

Martin (29-3-1, 26 KOs) won the vacant IBF heavyweight title in January 2016 when his opponent, Vyacheslav Glazkov, blew out his right knee. Martin was knocked out by Anthony Joshua in his first defense and hasn't challenged for a title since.

A 37-year-old southpaw, Martin impressed in a defeat to Luis Ortiz last year, flooring the Cuban twice before Martin was stopped in Round 6. Martin rebounded with a fourth-round knockout of Devin Vargas in August.

I think JA Vs Martin will look the same as AJ Vs Martin but 7 years on. Anderson in 3.

A lot less competitive with Martin :verysad:
I mean, its better than some rando Polish cab driver, but it is still quite a let down from what it could have been. Hopefully they get it made later this year.
As for this matchup, I see a short night for Anderson, and a hard night for Martin. If old man Ortiz put Martin out in 6, I'd be disappointed if Anderson took more than 4.
Anderson is light years faster, has height and reach, youth and determination on his side.
And Charles Martin has the humbleness Anthony Joshua beat into him nearly seven years ago.

Still a step up. Perhaps would be a more meaningful win than vs Zhan as Martin is a known decent fighter. Zhan hasn't had any fight that's tested him.

Was looking forward to Anderson-Kossobutski.

Anderson shouldn't have too much difficultly with Martin.

I hope JA takes his time and isn't sloppy, as Martin still has power and is a southpaw.

That said he should be able to dominate Martin, who is short notice.

Martin has only fought 10 rounds in the past three and a half years and as you said, short notice here. But he does represent a step-up fight for Anderson and Anderson is quite hittable. We have seen that in his fights so far.

I think it would make a bigger statement to finish Martin quickly and brutally, faster than Ortiz- then maybe call out Ortiz if he's still alive.

“100%. 1000%. Every day I wake up and somebody tells me ‘you gotta eat this’ and I ask why I gotta eat that and they say ’cause it’s gonna make you feel better, make you perform better. I’m gonna do it, you understand me, like when somebody tells me you can’t drink coconut water.

It’s nothing I can’t do, cause at the end of the day it’s gonna pay the bills. I’m willing to do what I have to do provide, but it’s been a job since the day I turned pro.”

He's a pretty likable guy, a pole apart from Deyontay Wilder.
I really wish him all the best.

sure. he's still talkin bout khossubutskiy as his opponent in that interview though.

martin can't cope with jared's onslaught more than ... well... he can't.

i'd be surprised if that fight goes 8nto the 2nd round, if anderson doesn't play around it should be over pretty quickly.

zhan would've been the much more interesting fight. hope they solve the visa bs and iy gets made after this.

Martin is basically old, fat, not that good, and retied. He's rolling out of bed for a paycheck and with the slim hope of getting lucky. He will need a KO to get lucky though. The is no way boxing will allow him to win on points. He could be ready to take a dive like a Wilder like opponent. Let just say I am betting against him for various " reasons ".

Ah, boxing.

He will take the fight though which for boxing fans is sadly enough. Will it be canceled? Stay tuned.

Glad I didn't buy tickets to go see this at the Huntington.
Watching Anderson wipe out Martin isn't even worth the time required to watch it on espn from living room.

Why? Martin isn't very good and wouldn't seem to be a remotely worthy opponent at this stage.

Martin is taking a paycheck, no more. This is a bogus fight, the only thing that will happen is Martin will fall. I say he will pick a comfortable spot is the ring. Feel free to watch that.
