Benn v Watson

Post by TheGoods »

Just watched it again on YouTube. Amazing fight and atmosphere. Ref never had to split them up once. In a tent in Finsbury Park. Remember it on ITV like it was yesterday. 😍

Too right, possibly the best fight I've ever seen. Watson showed what he was about that night.

Great fight and Mike Watson was on fire that night......right tactics and mindset, some great skills.
Benn was at his most violent but also somewhat naive as well.

Colin Jones, Herol Graham and Mike Watson......world champions without the belt to prove it.

If Eubank and Benn ever get inducted in the international hall of fame(and I think there’s a strong case for both) then I think Watson might deserve his credit at some point because he put a brilliant performance on Benn and many feel he won the first Eubank fight(and was winning the second until certain traumatic events happened). The only person who ever dominated him was Mike McCallum and that’s a testament to McCallum’s greatness as well as a particularly bad style matchup.

UK Middleweight answer to Ali-Foreman

We need more posts here guys. This was Benn vs Watson, not just any fight.

Who was there? What are your memories of it etc? I became a Watson fan that night, have been ever since.

It was my 18th birthday. My girlfriend threw a party for me in a local pub back room. I watched the fight the next day. Was it shown live?

Benn was a big deal and it felt like he was going to be a special fighter, which he was. But he fought the worst fight imaginable.

Good fight, but I thought the ending was a bit odd. I was so impressed with Watson I picked him against McCallum.

It was live if I remember correctly, a Sunday night.

I was in Spain at the time so missed it live.

A fella I knew back than swore blind that the fight was not on the level. His point was Benn was just looping wide, easy to see shots, then went over from a jab. I don't buy that personally, if you look at the velocity of Benn's shots, any one of them could have caused damage.
