Bejines is described as a featherweight when his last fight was for the WBC bantamweight title.

Cheers, John. Bejines and Johnny Owen dying in the same ring for the same title three years apart is a sickening coincidence. Yes, Owen was a disaster waiting to happen with his abnormally thin skull but referee Marty Denkin needed to stop it after Owen was dropped in the 12th round. Owen had been dropped in round nine, got up, gritted his teeth and fought back, only to get dropped again in that fateful 12th round. That's when Denkin waves it over. He didn't.

As for Bejines, he took on Alberto Davila for the vacant WBC title in September 1983 without a fight in the previous 13 months which is bizarre for a man who had fought prolifically before then. Yes, he dislocated an elbow when forced to retire against Edgar Roman in August 1982 but there was plenty of time to test the elbow (and build his stamina) in a few fights before the world title opportunity, but he sat it out. There is a rumour that Bejines - ahead on points - wanted his corner to retire him at the end of the 11th round but, running on empty, Bejines was sent out and within seconds was caught by a Davila right and down he went by the ropes, hitting his head on those ropes. Sadly, it was all over for the 21-year-old.
