Jared Anderson vs. Charles Martin | ESPN - July 1, 2023
Re: Jared Anderson vs. Charles Martin | ESPN - July 1, 2023
No one guessed a W10 for Anderson but I'm hardly shocked. I've often seen an undefeated prospect extended for the first time against a guy who has fought about 5 top-10 opponents. Granted Martin lost most of those, but Martin developed the muscle memory to know how to survive.
Unfortunately Jared did seem stunned when hit. Jared's chin isn't a Cobb/Chuvalo chin and you can do iittle to improve that. Marciano, Liston, Tyson, and Foreman all went 10 before their first title fight. But were they stunned that bad?

Surprisingly Martin didn't just survive, but won a round or two. The 5th was quite bad for Jah. Anyway, it was a fair win.

Charles Martin: "I Did The Best I Could, Jared Anderson Will Make His Way To The Top"
"I took the fight on 11 days’ notice. I did the best I could. He’s a real champion. He’ll be making his way to the top soon. I’m proud of him," Martin said.
“He’s really good. He’s a crafty boxer. Usually, when I catch somebody and hurt them, I can finish them. If they don’t fall, usually I can follow up and put them away. But he is like a little middleweight. He is crafty. He was able to get out even when he was rocked. He was able to maneuver and get out the way. He’s going to be a champion.”

Bad performance from Anderson, should've got a washed-up Martin out of there within 3 rounds. The question marks remain.
Re: Jared Anderson vs. Charles Martin | ESPN - July 1, 2023
why was it a bad performance? I think expectations may have been too high. Anderson is young and this fight was great for him. Martin is no bum. He's not a top fighter, but he never got any credit for being a solid fighter. I think we learned a lot about Jah's resiliance in this fight. Aside from his history of issues with pulling straight back, he showed an ability to change up approaches in the ring. Seems to me this was a terrific learning experience and if he is as good as I think, we should see major improvement in his weak areas next time out.
Re: Jared Anderson vs. Charles Martin | ESPN - July 1, 2023
Joshua done him in two when he was champ, Anderson's punch power should've taken him out. I don't buy the "wanting to go the distance" excuse.oogiebe wrote: ↑03 Jul 2023, 09:35why was it a bad performance? I think expectations may have been too high. LOL! Oh I see. No one here mentioned Jah's statement on going the distance. We were talking about the kid's performance.IRONFIST wrote: ↑03 Jul 2023, 10:05Joshua done him in two when he was champ, Anderson's punch power should've taken him out. The reference to AJ's KO aren't relative here.

I mentioned it. Everything is relative, if we are judging current heavyweights performances.oogiebe wrote: ↑03 Jul 2023, 10:16LOL! Oh I see. Re: Jared Anderson vs. Charles Martin | ESPN - July 1, 2023
It was in comparison to Joshua, Joshua beat him in two as reigning champ, Anderson beat him on points when he's washed-up.
Re: Jared Anderson vs. Charles Martin | ESPN - July 1, 2023
I'm more concerned with Anderson's chin than I am that it went 10. Every HW slugger who was ever referred to as a GOAT was extended before he won the title. Dempsey, Louis, Marciano, Tyson, Foreman, all of them. Actually that would make a pretty good quiz as to who were the extenders. But I digress..oogiebe wrote: ↑03 Jul 2023, 09:35why was it a bad performance? I think expectations may have been too high. Anderson is young and this fight was great for him. Martin is no bum. The W10 was fine. But Jared was hurt. Flip side is Martin can punch.

He took some pretty good shots and learned he can go through that sort of distress. Martin hits pretty good. I'm more concerned with Jah's inability to avoid straight shots.

Levi Forte went 10 rounds with a young George Foreman but got knocked out by fighters I've never heard of. A guy from Montana knocked out Lamar Clark quicker than a young Ali did. Iron, how far do you want to take this?
Oogiebe, worried, might be a little strong as I have other things to worry about.
Re: Jared Anderson vs. Charles Martin | ESPN - July 1, 2023
It’s a shame but I sort of knew it. Anderson has fast hands, can switch hit and has very good feet - but, lacks pop at HW. He will improve, but he won’t be what everyone expected e.g. a world beater.
I thought Zhan would’ve KO’d him even before the Martin fight.

Re: Jared Anderson vs. Charles Martin | ESPN - July 1, 2023
I agree he needed this. Sometimes young athletes have to find out for themselves what they need to work on, regardless of telling them many times. He'll be more coachable now, and will really improve on his already great talent.oogiebe wrote: ↑02 Jul 2023, 09:49 Still super high on Jah. This was exactly what he needed. Martin provided him with maybe his best effort and hopefully taught the kid that he has things to work on. Jah still dominated most of the fight and showed us he has a chin. Next fight for Anderson will be telling.

Re: Jared Anderson vs. Charles Martin | ESPN - July 1, 2023
I just watched a highlights video of this bout.
Jared got rocked in the final seconds. It looked like he said, "That was a Nice Shot" towards "Martin", after he was announced The Winner by decision.
He's basically A work in progress. The Switching Stances is A Nice Talent, whether a natural ability or acquired over time.
He Has decent potential, but not quite ready for the top 5 out there.
What was Martin ranked at..? Somewhere between 8 to 12..?
It's So hard to tell nowadays, especially with there being So Many Top 20 guys fighting So Seldomly anymore. Inactivity is So En-Vogue in Boxing. Especially once a prospect attains a six figure paycheck.

Closer to 20-25 I'd imagine. He rebuilt after that loss to Kownacki. Then he took another loss to OrtizAngryGoon38 wrote: ↑10 Jul 2023, 12:50 I just watched a highlights video of this bout.

That was a KO punch at the end by Martin against almost anybody else, and Jared took it well. Most guys would have been saved by the bell--or not--by that punch with 5 seconds to go.
It was a good and bad reveal for Jared. Exposed his really bad defensive habits, but also exposed an incredible chin.
