Knockout CP Freshmart vs. Erick Rosa - TBA
Thammanoon Niyomtrong-Erick Rosa Strawweight Title Consolidation Fight Ordered By WBA
The ambitious career of Erick Rosa will now include a shot at the best strawweight in the world.
Boxing Scene has confirmed that the WBA has ordered a strawweight title consolidation fight between Dominican Republic’s Rosa as the ‘World’ (Regular) titlist and Thailand’s Thammanoon Niyomtrong, better known as Knockout CP Freshmart and who holds the ‘Super’ title. The fight was formally ordered on September 29 with the two sides granted a free negotiation period to work out terms for their overdue mandatory title fight.
“WBA rules entitle the President and the Championships Committee at their discretion to define a mandatory period,” Carlos Chavez, chairman of the WBA Championships Committee, informed Niyomtrong and Rosa via official letter, a copy of which was obtained by Boxing Scene. “Your Super Champion status was conditioned to an eighteen-month (18) mandatory defense period.
“Since your last mandatory was on November 29, 2018, the next obligatory championship bout is past due from May 28, 2020, and thus shall box against the world champion (official contender) Erick Rosa. Pursuant to WBA rule C.13- Bout Limitations – the champion may not fight a boxer who is not the official challenger within sixty (60) days of the expiration of the mandatory defense period. Based on the above-mentioned facts, on behalf of the Championships Committee, we hereby order a thirty-day (30) mandatory negotiation period.”
Niyomtrong fights for Piyarat Vachirarattanawong’s Petpiya Fight Promotions, while Rosa is proudly represented by Belgica Pena of Shuan Boxing, the leading promoter in the Dominican Republic.
Niyomtrong (24-0, 9KOs) has held the WBA ‘Super’ strawweight since June 2016, when he outpointed Nicaragua’s Bryon Rojas to upgrade his interim title. The 32-year-old from Surin, Thailand is the longest reigning active male titleholder in the sport, having defended his title eleven times.
The most recent title defense for Niyomtrong came in a twelve-round win over countryman and former WBC titlist Wanheng ‘TBE’ Menayothin on July 20 in Chonburi, Thailand. The bout was a few years past its best-sell date, long called while both were unbeaten titlists though reluctant to meet due to their longtime friendship.
The fight also came with the understanding that Niyomtrong was very likely to next face Rosa. A box-off was ordered by the WBA last year, with Niyomtrong scoring a fifth round knockout of Robert Paradero last December 14 in Phuket, Thailand. Rosa (5-0, 1 KO) entered the picture one week later, winning his version of the title with a twelve-round, split decision win over Vic Saludar who outpointed Paradero to win the vacant belt earlier in the year.
Rosa has fought in scheduled ten- and twelve-round fights since his October 2020 pro debut. The 22-year-old southpaw has fought all five fights in his Santo Domingo hometown, including his title winning effort over Saludar last December. He previously claimed the interim WBA strawweight title in a twelve-round, unanimous decision win over then-unbeaten Ricardo Astuvilca last July 21. The reign lasted just one month, before the WBA removed the belts from circulation due to its forced and ongoing title reduction campaign.
Niyomtrong-Rosa is one of three title consolidation clashes to have been put in play by the WBA in the past couple of weeks.
The sanctioning body recently instructed WBA ‘Super’/IBF middleweight titlist Gennadiy Golovkin and WBA ‘World’ titlist Erislandy Lara to enter talks for a fight that is required to take place by next January. Also, and as recently reported by BS.com, Leo Santa Cruz and Leigh Wood will have to return to the negotiating table for their featherweight title consolidation clash that both sides have gone out of their way to stall.
Should all three fights reach resolution, it will leave just four divisions—heavyweight, super middleweight, welterweight and lightweight—with two each WBA title claimants.

Thammanoon Niyomtrong-Erick Rosa: Terms Reached For WBA Title Bout
A big fight is in store for boxing’s smallest weight division.
Boxing Scene has learned that terms have been reached for a WBA strawweight title consolidation fight between ‘Super’ champ Thammanoon Niyomtrong and secondary titlist Erick ‘Mini Pacman’ Rosa. When the fight takes place, however, will depend on when Niyomtrong is able to secure a travel visa to travel to the U.S.
The fight was once targeted to take place as part of a Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) card on December 17, headlined by the Frank Martin-Michel Rivera WBA lightweight title eliminator airing live on Showtime. Niyomtrong-Rosa likely would have landed on the YouTube portion of the undercard preceding the Showtime-televised tripleheader from The Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas.
There is loose talk of Rosa (5-0, 1KO) taking a stay-busy fight as Niyomtrong (24-0, 9KOs) sorts out his travel issues, though such plans remain unconfirmed as this goes to publish.

Petchyindee Boxing Promotions Wins Purse Bid For Thammanoon Niyomtrong-Erick Rosa WBA Title Fight
A strawweight title fight that was once agreed to was instead resolved through a purse bid hearing.
Petchyindee Boxing Promotions claimed promotional rights to the WBA strawweight title consolidation fight between ‘Super’ champ Thammanoon Niyomtrong and secondary titlist Erick ‘Mini Pacman’ Rosa. The Bangkok-headquartered outfit submitted $140,000, outpacing Shuan Boxing who offered $122,000 as the lone other bidder during a purse bid hearing held during the WBA Centennial Convention on Monday in Orlando, Florida.
Niyomtrong is entitled to 75 percent of the winning bid, for a payday of $105,000USD as the defending ‘Super’ titleholder. Rosa is left with 25 percent, which equates to a $35,000 payday strictly from the purse bid result.
The fight will most likely take place in Thailand, which for Niyomtrong at least resolves a previous issue in obtaining a a visa to travel to the U.S. One previously floated date was on the non-televised undercard of Saturday’s Showtime tripleheader, topped by the Frank Martin-Michel Rivera WBA lightweight title eliminator. Niyomtrong-Rosa likely would have landed on the YouTube portion of the undercard preceding the Showtime-televised tripleheader from The Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas, had the fight proceeded in the intended form.
There was loose talk of Rosa (5-0, 1 KO) taking a stay-busy fight as Niyomtrong (24-0, 9 KOs) sorts out his travel issues, though the fight was instead presented back to the WBA who determined that a purse bid was necessary.
Niyomtrong fights under the Petchinydee promotional umbrella, through Piyarat Vachirarattanawong’s Petpiya Fight Promotions out of Thailand. Rosa is proudly represented by Belgica Pena of Shuan Boxing, the leading promoter in the Dominican Republic. The two sides were ordered to begin negotiations in late September for the long overdue mandatory title fight.

Niyomtrong has fought exclusively in Asia throughout his ten-year pro career. All but one fight has taken place in his native Thailand. The lone exception came in July 2018, when he traveled to Qingdao, China to face and defeat regional hero and former titlist Chaozhong Xiong via unanimous decision.

WBA Title Consolidation Fight Set, March 1
Boxing’s longest reigning male titleholder is fully set for his next defense.
Boxing Scene has confirmed that the Thammanoon Niyomtrong-Erick Rosa WBA strawweight title consolidation clash will take place on March 1 in Nakhon Sawan, Thailand. The date comes more than a month after Petchyindee Boxing Promotions claimed promotional rights through a purse bid hearing held during the WBA convention in Orlando, Florida.
Niyomtrong fights under the Petchyindee promotional umbrella, through Piyarat Vachirarattanawong’s Petpiya Fight Promotions out of Thailand.
Rosa (5-0, 1 KO) will fight outside of his native Dominican Republic for the first time in his ambitious career. The 22-year-old southpaw from Santo Domingo—where all five pro fights have taken place—went all ten rounds in his October 2020 pro debut and upgraded to twelve rounds by his fourth pro fight, when he outpointed unbeaten Ricardo Astuvilca to win the now defunct interim WBA strawweight title.
An upgrade to the secondary ‘Regular’ title came in Rosa’s most recent fight, a twelve-round, split decision victory over Vic Saludar in December 2021. He went all of 2022 without a fight, with much of the final three months hoping to lure Niyomtrong to the U.S.
There was once a plan in place for Niyomtrong-Rosa to land on the undercard preceding the December 17 Frank Martin-Michel Rivera Showtime telecast. Visa issues nixed those plans, to the point of the WBA calling for a purse bid since the fight reached overdue status.
Petchyindee Boxing Promotions posted $140,000, outbidding Shuan Boxing ($122,000) who promotes Rosa and hoped to bring the fight either to D.R. or on a Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) card in early 2023.
The purse bid result meant that Niyomtrong (24-0, 9 KOs)—best known in boxing circles as Knockout CP Freshmart—doesn’t have to leave Thailand. The 32-year-old from Surin has spent the entirety of his eleven year career in Asia, all with the lone fight outside of his home country coming in a July 2018 unanimous decision win over former WBC titlist Chaozhong Xiong in Qingdao, China.
Niyomtrong upgraded his secondary WBA title reign to full title status following a June 2016 decision win over Nicaragua’s Byron Rojas. Eleven title defenses have followed, most recently in a twelve-round win over countryman and former WBC titlist Wanheng ‘TBE’ Menayothin on July 20 in Chonburi, Thailand.
It also came with the understanding that Niyomtrong was very likely to next face Rosa.
By that point, Niyomtrong emerged as the longest reigning active male titlist. He earned that distinction last January, after Gary Russell Jr’s WBC featherweight title reign—which dated back to March 2015—came to an end with a twelve-round defeat to the Philippines’ Mark Magsayo.

Re: Knockout CP Freshmart vs. Erick Rosa - March 1, 2023
Niyomtrong and Rosa will define the only WBA minimumweight champion on March 1st
The World Boxing Association (WBA) has made many decisions, through its Championships Committee, aimed at advancing the World Title Reduction Plan introduced by President Gilberto Jesus Mendoza. In that sense, the Thai Thammanoon Niyomtrong and the Dominican Erick Rosa, will fight this March 1st in Nakhon Sawan, Thailand.
The mandatory fight was sent to purse bid last December and Niyomtrong’s team won the rights to organize the fight. The Asian is the super champion of the minimum category and will face the champion, who is from the Dominican Republic. The winner will be the only WBA 105 lbs. champion.
These are two strong fighters with a good style. Niyomtrong has a long reign in which he has defeated all the opponents that have appeared in his path and has proven to be one of the most solid monarchs within the organization.
Rosa, on the other hand, is a very young fighter who has advanced very fast. A southpaw guard, he knows how to adapt to any fight situation and arrives with a lot of motivation and with the intention of damaging the home fighter’s party.
With about 15 days left for the fight, the atmosphere is already heating up between these undefeated dls. Niyomtrong has 24 wins, 9 by knockout, while Rosa has 5 wins, 1 of them before the limit.

Niyomtrong-Rosa Title Consolidation Bout Canceled; Rosa Remains In Thailand, Unable To Return Home
The next job for Erick Rosa is to return home.
Unfortunately, he will return empty handed to the Dominican Republic.
Boxing Scene has confirmed that Rosa’s challenge of WBA ‘Super’ strawweight titlist Thammanoon Niyomtrong is no longer in play. Their title consolidation fight was due to take place March 1 in Nakhon Sawan, Thailand, though the fight was jeopardized once the unbeaten Dominican southpaw was detained by Thai immigration officials upon arriving in the country on Monday.
Rosa–who holds the secondary WBA ‘Regular’ strawweight title—remains stuck in Thailand and without his passport which remains in the possession of Thai authorities.
“There is no longer any fight,” Belgica Pena, Rosa’s promoter and head of Shuan Boxing, told BS.com. “They broke the agreement. It seems to me all this was on purpose to weaken us.”
It remains unclear if Niyomtrong will proceed with the fight date versus another opponent. Representatives from the WBA and event promoter Petpiya Fight did not respond to inquiries by Boxing Scene seeking comment as this goes to publication.
As previously reported by Boxing Scene, Rosa remained in detention for more than a day immediately upon arriving in Thailand following a 21-hour flight from Dominican Republic. The 22-year-old southpaw from Santo Domingo was released on Tuesday but unable to leave the country. The issue appears to be with his passport, which expires in April. Thai immigration laws for Dominican visitor require “a valid passport for at least 6 months following departure date. It is also recommended that your valid passport have at least 2 remaining unused pages for any necessary entry and exit stamps that may be issued.”
A confirmed travel itinerary and proof of funds and accommodation are also required.
Rosa’s side contends that everything on their end was handled well in advance. However, the response from Petpiya Fight has been slow to the point of unprofessional and perhaps intentional.
“The cheating has already begun,” Belgica Pena, Rosa’s career-long promoter who is also currently detained, told Boixng Scene on Monday. “Our lawyers asked the Thais for all the necessary documentation to enter Thailand in time and they always took three or four days to respond.”
A letter from the Thai Boxing Association-Sanctioning Authority was requested by Pena and Rosa through their legal team, which should help resolve the issue. Such action never took place, though it is believed that Niyomtrong and his side were eager to go through the fight due to the amount of money invested in the title consolidation bout.
Niyomtrong (24-0, 9 KOs) was due to attempt the 12th defense of the longest active title reign among male titleholders.
The 32-year-old from Surin, Thailand upgraded his secondary belt to WBA ‘Super’ champion following a twelve-round win over Nicaragua’s Byron Rojas in June 2016. Eleven title defenses have followed for Niymontrong. His most recent win came in a twelve-round, unanimous decision over countryman, close friend and former WBC titlist Wanheng ‘TBE’ Menayothin on July 20 in Chonburi, Thailand.
Rosa (5-0, 1 KO) was required to fight outside of his native Dominican Republic for the first time in his ambitious career. The 22-year-old southpaw from Santo Domingo went all ten rounds in his October 2020 pro debut and upgraded to twelve rounds by his fourth pro fight, when he outpointed unbeaten Ricardo Astuvilca to win the now defunct interim WBA strawweight title.
An upgrade to the secondary ‘Regular’ title came in Rosa’s most recent fight, a twelve-round, split decision victory over Vic Saludar in December 2021. He went all of 2022 without a fight, with much of the final three months hoping to lure Niyomtrong to the U.S.
Instead, the ordered title consolidation bout went to a purse bid hearing. Petchyindee Boxing Promotions—the parent company of Petpiya Fight Promotions—posted $140,000, outbidding Shuan Boxing ($122,000) who promotes Rosa and hoped to bring the fight either to D.R. or on a Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) card in early 2023.
It remains unclear if the fight will be reordered by the WBA, or if Rosa’s title will be eliminated due to failure to commit. The fight was ordered as part of the WBA’s ongoing title reduction campaign, with strawweight still among six weight divisions where the sanctioning body still boasts two titleholders.
The next job for Erick Rosa is to return home.
Unfortunately, he will return empty handed to the Dominican Republic.

WBA Press Release
The WBA Championships Committee has cancelled the last purse bid for the minimumweight bout between WBA 105-pound super champion Thammanoon Niyomtrong a/k/a Knockout CP Freshmart and regular champion Erick Rosa. Niyomtrong’s team had originally won a purse bid for the rights to the fight and it was scheduled to take place last March 3rd in Thailand.
However, Rosa had problems related to travel documentation and was denied entry into Thailand. The WBA has now called for a new purse bid, scheduled for March 28th in Panama City.
After studying the situation, the WBA concluded there is some fault on both sides for the failure on March 3rd to hold the fight. Consequently, the WBA considers it appropriate to cancel the award of the promotional rights due to the extraordinary circumstances.
A new purse bid will now be called with an additional condition that the fight will take place on neutral ground. Whoever wins the rights to promote this fight, will not be able to hold the fight in Thailand or the Dominican Republic.
In the event that there is no acceptable bid for the bidding or if appropriate contracts are not submitted in a timely manner, the championship committee may make various decisions based on the internal rules, among which is to order a fight between the next two highest ranked fighters in the body.

Thammanoon Niyomtrong, Erick Rosa Reach Terms, Avoid Purse Bid For WBA Title Consolidation Bout
Thammanoon Niyomtrong and Erick Rosa have found common ground.
BS.com has confirmed that a purse bid was canceled for their reordered WBA title consolidation bout as a deal appears to have been reached between parties. The hearing was scheduled to take place Tuesday at WBA headquarters in Panama City, Panama but is no longer required based on information provided to the sanctioning body.
“We have reached an agreement with the team of Thai super champion Thammanoon Niyomtrong to bring the fight #RosaNiyomtrong to the United States,” Belgica Pena, Rosa’s promoter, revealed Monday.
The date and precise location are both still forthcoming, though Boxing Scene has learned the bout is targeted to take place on a still-to-be-scheduled Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) event in June. Niyomtrong will attempt the twelfth defense of the WBA ‘Super’ strawweight title in what is the sport’s longest active title reign among all male boxers.
Rosa has held the WBA ‘Regular’ title since a December 2021 win over former titleholder Vic Saludar.
The development comes roughly a month after their previously scheduled March 1 clash in Nakhon Sawan, Thailand, which was canceled largely due to a breakdown in communication surrounding Rosa’s in-country eligibility. The previously recognized purse bid won by Petchyindee Boxing Promotions—the parent company of Petpiya Fight Promotions—was invalidated by the WBA, who have placed clearer stipulations for the reordered title fight.
It was determined by the WBA that both parties were at fault prior to ordering a fresh round of talks with an assigned March 28 date for a purse bid should the two sides fail to reach terms.
As previously reported by Boxing Scene, their March 1 bout ran into trouble when Rosa (5-0, 1 KOs) was detained by Thai immigration officials upon arrival in Bangkok. Rosa’s passport did not meet the requirements for Dominicans to travel to Thailand, though it remains unclear why he was not stopped upon boarding a plane en route to Thailand.
A breakdown in communication between his team–led by promoter Belgica Pena of Shuan Boxing—and Petpiya Fight left Rosa’s travel status in limbo before receiving permission to return home. The development thus killed plans for the fight, to the detriment of Petpiya who invested heavily into the event.
Now, it is Niyomtrong (24-0, 9 KOs) who will fight outside of his native Thailand for the second time in his career.
The 32-year-old from Surin, Thailand has held the WBA strawweight crown since a decision win over Byron Rojas in their June 2016 title consolidation bout. Eleven defenses have followed, including his lone career road trip. Niyomtrong turned away the challenge of former WBC titlist Chaozhong Xiong in a July 2018 win in Qingado, China. In his most recent start, Niyomtrong earned a twelve-round, unanimous decision over countryman, close friend and former WBC titlist Wanheng ‘TBE’ Menayothin on July 20 in Chonburi, Thailand.
Rosa (5-0, 1 KO) was required to fight outside of his native Dominican Republic for the first time in his ambitious career. Re: Knockout CP Freshmart vs. Erick Rosa - TBA
Hopefully they can finally get this fight over the line. I think Niyomtrong wins a fairly comfortable decision but it should be competitive and Rosa appears to be a handy fighter.

Thammanoon Niyomtrong-Erick Rosa WBA Strawweight Title Fight Heads Back To Purse Bid
Boxing’s tiniest division remains one sanctioning body’s biggest headache.
The long-ago ordered Thammanoon Niyomtrong-Erick Rosa WBA title consolidation bout is headed back to a purse bid hearing. The latest development comes as both sides defaulted on a previously reached deal for a fight once targeted to take place this weekend.
Instead, a July 21 Zoom hearing will once again determine promotional rights.
“The situation has been unprecedented due to a series of events that have prevented both fighters from stepping into the ring to fight for the world championship,” WBA Championship Committee chairman Carlos Chavez said of the ongoing situation. “For that reason, the [WBA] decided to make an unprecedented decision with the intention of resolving the situation and leave the 105 lbs. with only one champion.
“The bidding is scheduled to take place under WBA rules but with certain conditions... [the fight] cannot be organized in Thailand or the Dominican Republic due to the inconveniences that have delayed the fight in previous occasions.”
Thailand’s Niyomtrong (24-0, 9KOs) has held the WBA ‘Super’ strawweight title since June 2016, which is the longest active and uninterrupted title reign among male boxers. Dominican Republic’s Rosa (5-0, 1KO) won the interim WBA title in a July 2021 points win over unbeaten Ricardo Astuvilca. He upgraded to WBA ‘Regular’ titleholder with a win over Vic Saludar in their December 2021 bout to determine the final mandatory for Niyomtrong.
Rosa has not fought since that night as he has awaited his shot at the full crown.
Niyomtrong-Rosa first went to a purse bid hearing last December in Orlando, Florida, held during the WBA’s annual convention. Petchyindee Boxing Promotions posted $140,000, outbidding Shuan Boxing ($122,000) who hoped to bring the fight either to D.R. or on a Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) card in early 2023.

was determined by the WBA that both parties were at fault prior to ordering a fresh round of talks with an assigned March 28 date for a purse bid should the two sides fail to reach terms. A deal was reportedly reached that would see the fight land on a summertime PBC event. There remains unresolved issues which forced the WBA to go back to the well.
“Whoever wins the rights to organize the fight must do it in a period between 60 and 90 days… between September 19 and October 19, 2023,” confirmed Chavez. “On the other hand, the WBA offered the possibility to both fighters to make a fight without their titles at stake.
“In case of accepting this fight by either of them, it must be done before August 21."
Niyomtrong has made eleven successful title defenses, along with four wins during his interim title reign. He has not fought since a twelve-round, unanimous decision over countryman, close friend and former long-reigning WBC titlist Wanheng ‘TBE’ Menayothin last July 20 in Chonburi, Thailand.

Erick Rosa To Take Stay Busy Fight Aug. 25, Then Pursue Title Consolidation With Niyomtrong
Erick Rosa has held out long enough for his shot at consolidating his current title.
The secondary WBA strawweight titlist from the Dominican Republic will move forward with his career, In accordance with a recent WBA ruling. Rosa is set to return to the ring versus a yet-to-be-named opponent on August 25 in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.
The decision comes as the WBA recently called for a July 21 purse bid hearing to determine promotional rights for Rosa’s title consolidation bout versus WBA ‘Super’ strawweight titlist Thammanoon Niyomtrong. The re-ordered title fight came with a stipulation that allowed for both boxers to enter non-title fights before facing each other since both have been out of the ring for a lengthy period.
Rosa will plan to challenge Niyomtrong upon the completion of his homecoming. The fight will mark the first for the unbeaten Dominican since a December 2021 points win over former IBF titlist Vic Saludar. He was then due to next challenge Niyomtrong, only for several delays to force the fight to a purse bid.
The December 2022 session was won by Petchyindee Boxing Promotions, Niyomytomg’s promoter whose bid of $140,000 outpaced Shuan Boxing ($122,000), Rosa’s career-long promoter.

All told, Rosa (5-0, 1KO) will have been out of the ring for 20 months by fight night.
“This has been the longest inactive period of my career,” Rosa stated. “I’m fine-tuning everything in training camp to make sure I fine tune every detail to be able to fight in front of my people at the absolute highest level.”
With a win, Rosa will next be expected to face Niyomtrong or face the threat of his title being removed from existence. Similarly, failure by Niyomtrong to honor what would be the twelfth defense of the ‘Super’ title he has held since a June 2016 win over Byron Rojas.

Thammanoon Niyomtrong-Erick Rosa: WBA Title Consolidation Bout Remains In Limbo As Deadline Nears
A strawweight title fight more than a year in the making remains in limbo as deadlines near.
BS.com has confirmed that ongoing efforts are being made to get Thammanoon Niyomtrong to the U.S. and his title consolidation bout with Erick Rosa into a boxing ring. The two were originally due to meet in October, with three separate dates—October 7, October 14 and October 19—provided to the WBA.
While it is obvious there is no likelihood of that any longer taking place, it comes as the WBA-imposed deadline of October 19 is now upon us with no hope in site for a bout that was originally ordered last year.
One version explained to Boxing Scene is there is a hang up in the visa status regarding Thailand’s Niyomtrong (24-0, 9KOs), the reigning WBA ‘Super’ strawweight titlist and the sport’s longest-reigning male titleholder. Shuan Boxing, Rosa’s promoter, won a July 21 purse bid hearing with the minimum amount of $80,000 presented to promote the fight on any of three mentioned October dates. Rosa holds the sanctioning body’s ‘Regular’ strawweight title.
Originally, Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) and Showtime were due to run an event on October 7 but those plans rapidly changed as rumors continue to swirl of Showtime’s potential exit from the sport. The network is presenting a show this weekend, though from Australia with the Tim Tszyu-Brian Mendoza WBO junior middleweight title fight.
The last remaining date called for Shuan Boxing to present the event on October 19 in Haiti. No plans were revealed for any such show to take place, which at minimum puts the fight at risk of entering a default and headed back to a purse bid.
The WBA can take extreme action and strip both boxers of their respective titles for failure to defend, which would remove both belts from existence per the sanctioning body’s ongoing title reduction campaign. That type of move would then result in the next two highest ranked challengers to fight for the standard WBA strawweight title.
Niyomtrong (24-0, 9KOs) has held the WBA ‘Super’ strawweight title since June 2016. Dominican Republic’s Rosa (6-0, 2KOs) won the interim WBA title in a July 2021 points win over unbeaten Ricardo Astuvilca. He upgraded to WBA ‘Regular’ titleholder with a win over Vic Saludar in their December 2021 bout to determine the final mandatory for Niyomtrong.
The fight was budgeted to take place March 1 in Nakhon Sawan, Thailand. As previously reported by Boxing Scene, their March 1 bout ran into trouble when Rosa (5-0, 1KOs) was detained by Thai immigration officials upon arrival in Bangkok.
It was determined by the WBA that both parties were at fault prior to ordering a fresh round of talks with an assigned March 28 date for a purse bid should the two sides fail to reach terms. A deal was reportedly reached that would see the fight land on a summertime PBC event.
Unresolved issues forced the WBA to go back to the well. The July 21 purse bid hearing came with the stipulation that the fight could not take place in the home country of either boxer.
Rosa ended a 20-month inactive period with a sixth-round knockout of Orlando Pino on August 25 in his Santo Domingo hometown, where all six career pro fights have taken place.
