UFC puts boxing to shame
UFC puts boxing to shame
The UFC is in London tonight, and the fight card starts at 5pm, it will feature 15 fights, all televised, with the main event scheduled at 10.45pm.
With so many fights booked I can't see there being any filler at all between the action, the next fighters will be in the cage as soon as the last lot are out the cage. Non stop action for approx 6 hours.
Why is it, that when it comes to production value, UFC is a near 10/10 and boxing is a 0?
Is the complete inability to stage worth-while televised shows the reason boxing has died a death and succumbed to YouTube and exhibition freak shows?

Re: UFC puts boxing to shame
I've seen about 10x more One FC action than boxing this year.
well-matched, extremely exciting fights, and plenty of them. the best fight the best (mostly). the fighters don't parrot stupid 'beef' cliches on social media. if a fighter puts on a great performance but loses, no problem, he'll go again.
I can hardly GAF about boxing.

Re: UFC puts boxing to shame
This one in London is one of the poorer cards of the year on paper, in terms of match ups and big names.
But every single one of the 15 fights is more closely matched than your average boxing ppv headline. And that isn't just my opinion, look at the odds you'll get in the bookies.
People want to watch real fights, simple as that.
Agree with the other points re. production, start times known in advance, lack of filler

Re: UFC puts boxing to shame
Bettering odds are a dead give away. (this is influenced by ufc having more variables, but mainly matchmaking...)
-a good boxing card is 80-20 headline, 90-10 comain, 95-5 everything else... (plenty have the main event 90-10 or worse)
-UFC 291 is basicaly 2 x 50-50s and 8x 60-40s and 2 70-30s.... The fights are as close as the matchmakers can possibly make...
as a result ufc has big names with tons of losses and noone fornicating cares. Main event of 291 has 11 losees between em, co-main has 11 losses between em, next fight 17 losses between em, next fight 22 losses between em, next 15... Boxings obsession with being undefeated makes compeditive matchmaking and longevity imposable.

UFC is a genuine sport. Boxing much less so these days. It seems to be that titles and rankings don't matter in boxing anymore.
A lot of boxing journalists and promoters are only interested in who earns the most. E.g. if you get a bigger fee for a fight than your competitors then you are the best, irrespective of talent or credentials.

True, but UFC is a completely different set up. They Have much more control of the fighters and matches. The UFC is essentially bath promoter and governing organisation, and truthfully matchmaker. The fighters manager is virtually redundant.
And if you fight in one org / promoter you can’t fight in another., Bellator can’t fight against UFC or PFL, One Fc etc etc UFC is largely considered to have the best fighters but still….
Also the fighters are comparatively poorly paid.
So yes, the matches are better but the organisation is stained in other ways.

Perhaps it is "stained in other ways" but at least it's a functioning product and not a withering cancer.

Re: UFC puts boxing to shame
I always struggle to understand why my view of MMA and what it is so wildly differs to everyone else on here.
Comparing a UFC show to a Matchroom show is fair enough in the same way that comparing boxing on TV to F1 or tennis is, but nobody does that.
There is this odd belief that for boxing to win, MMA has to lose and that’s just not the case, they are not competing with one another any more than all sports and forms of entertainment are battling for eyeballs.
There are certainly positives and negatives that each sport could steal or eliminate.
MMA appears to be slowly evolving to be more similar to boxing in that genuine rivals (perhaps alternatives is a better word?) are appearing and surviving so that MMA and UFC won’t be interchangeable in conversation anymore.
The money is still in boxing as are audience numbers, hence top active MMA competitors chasing boxing matches.
It’s tricky innit.

UFC is not a sport you sub human mess. It is a promotional company.big lennox wrote: ↑22 Jul 2023, 05:52 UFC is a genuine sport. Boxing much less so these days. It seems to be that titles and rankings don't matter in boxing anymore.

Kinda regret spending so much time watching boxing undercards.
Re: UFC puts boxing to shame
It’s why I stopped entirely. Even the old stacked DK cards were full of dross

I haven't paid attention to the UFC in years personally. Don't think I could name you 10 active fighters on the UFC roster.
Re: UFC puts boxing to shame
First card I've watched in ages from the start. There's barely 5 minutes between one fight ending and the walkouts starting for the next one.

Yes but it’s not a model you could replicate in boxingRicky wrote: ↑22 Jul 2023, 07:51JamesPhilips wrote: ↑22 Jul 2023, 06:04 True, but UFC is a completely different set up. Re: UFC puts boxing to shame
Dana White tried to get into boxing I hear he's setting up something this year.
The UFC has great production value and competitive fights which is great. A good boxing promoter with some influence and money could do the same. I miss the days of a good boxing competitive undercard. But slowly MMA is developing some of the same problems. The best MMA heavyweight in the world Ngannou is now with PFL not the UFC. And numerous other good fights are blocked due to fighters being in different organisations.

Yeah, that was decent viewing last night. Big crowd at the O2 and good competitive fights and nice for a UFC card to be on the tv in the UK at a decent hour.
Re: UFC puts boxing to shame
Molly had her 15 minutes of fame. if she was a boxer would be projected to the max.

Re: UFC puts boxing to shame
If she was a boxer she would be fed latvian dinner ladies and then win a 'world' title in her 5th fight beating a mongolian shoe repairer. As it is women's MMA is a world away from women's boxing and she is getting her arse handed to her without even breaking into the worlds top 15 in her weight class
Re: UFC puts boxing to shame
Absolutely owned, arm bar in 1st round against a lass not even in the top 15 rankings, took about 2 mins for her to almost have her arm broken. Hope it wasnt her signing on arm.
Re: UFC puts boxing to shame
pretty epic as nothing went wrong
UFC pretty much hold all the cards so can easily makes the top matches 99% of the time, not so much in boxing thou next week line up is tasty.
Re: UFC puts boxing to shame
Dana has been saying that for a while. Plus he has a history of lying and being a megalomaniac. He did a hell of a lot of build the promotion but I see him holding it back at the moment. PFL has a better format and pays the fighters a better percentage with decent tournament prize money. Once they get the names, the fans will follow and hopefully a proper rival to the UFC which means we can avoid the mostly terrible matchmaking that has been happening for quite a few years now. Only downside is two promotions refusing to work with each other like we get in boxing.black panther wrote: ↑23 Jul 2023, 07:07 Dana White tried to get into boxing I hear he's setting up something this year.

I agree with everything you and others say on this thread, but ONE reason is 'paying the fighters much less' - so there is that at least.Ricky wrote: ↑22 Jul 2023, 04:27 The UFC is in London tonight, and the fight card starts at 5pm, it will feature 15 fights, all televised, with the main event scheduled at 10.45pm.
