Not sure what year this was, but looks to be around the late 1960's.

I remember posting some articles in a sparring stories thread about Ali being knocked down and hurt several times in sparring by some fighters whose names escape me, maybe Ellis was one.

LOL i doubt very much if Ali was ever really 'knocked down and hurt" in a sparring session.
he was just clowning around for the crowd to get a re-action.check this out

I don’t think it’s beyond the realms of possibility, Ali wasn’t a great trainer and didn’t really take sparring seriously.Caractacus wrote: ↑26 Jul 2023, 11:10 LOL i doubt very much if Ali was ever really 'knocked down and hurt" in a sparring session.

remember Elmo Henderson ?
He use to carry around a crumpled and faded newspaper article, that had a photograph of him putting Ali on the canvas during a sparring session.

This must be the incident you are referring to,
when Ali was sparring with Jimmy Ellis while training to fight Earnie Shavers in September 1977
( scroll down the link to the middle of newspaper page to see the article)

but was it a 'gag" to help hype the fight ?

Who knows, you can probably say that about any rumour you hear before a fight. That link I posted also had articles that Eddie Brooks and Shavers knocked him down, also had troube with Cody Jones. At the end of the day it’s sparring so not a lot can be read into it but it’s not unusual for the A side to come off second best to guys levels below them.Caractacus wrote: ↑27 Jul 2023, 16:12 This must be the incident you are referring to,

The two sparring partners look like Larry Holmes and Tiger Roy Williams
Re: The Sparring sessions of Muhammad Ali ( 1961-1984)
It’s disturbing how much punishment Ali takes in those videos. Even if it’s clowning he’s still taking punches he really didn’t need to get hit with.

In Larry Holmes autobiography, he mentions Muhammad Ali dismissed Roy tiger Williams
as a sparring partner not too long after they got back from Zaire.
How long was not mentioned, but Williams claimed Ali owned him some money,
and the sparring sessions with Williams were heated and getting out of control.
Here is Ali and Holmes at the Deer Lake Camp in PA, before going to Zaire to fight Foreman.

.Ali sparring with Eddie "Bossman" Jones.
This must be for the fight in Zaire, as Bossman Jones had famously earlier defected from the Foreman camp to train with Ali.
