Overtime Boxing | DAZN - August 2023

Elijah Pierce-Mike Plania tops first Overtime Boxing card Aug. 4

Overtime, known for its elite basketball league for players aged 16 through 20, will debut its boxing venture Aug. 4 in Atlanta with a junior featherweight main event between Elijah Pierce and Mike Plania, Overtime officials told ESPN.

The four-fight Friday night series on DAZN from Atlanta's OTE Arena (capacity approximately 1,200) continues Aug. 11 with Sonny Duversonne headlining against an opponent to be determined, followed by Aug. 18 with Narciso Carmona vs. TBA. The series concludes Aug. 25 with undefeated middleweight prospect Lorenzo "Truck" Simpson vs. Vlad Hernandez.

"I watch their videos on TikTok of basketball, Rob Dillingham and the twins. I was like, Overtime Boxing? That would be fire for me," said Simpson, 23, who is from Baltimore. "I'm young like those guys. Exciting. And it's an amazing opportunity."

In all, Overtime Boxing (OTX) signed 30-plus boxers. Among them: Haven Brady Jr. (fighting on the Aug. 4 undercard), Raul Marquez's son, Giovanni Marquez (Aug. 11), Money Powell (Aug. 18) and David Navarro (Aug. 11).

"Our vision with Overtime, in launching OTX, our new boxing vertical, is essentially to help young pros have a spotlight shine on them, tell their story and give them a chance to develop as fighters," Overtime Boxing GM Brandon Rhodes told ESPN in February.

"One of the gaps that we're seeing in the marketplace is that while Gen Z ... is saying boxing is kind of the No. 4 favorite sport, there's not a lot of storytelling that happens on a 365 basis in boxing.

"By that I mean video, social content -- that's what we do best,"
he added. "We turn out content, we discover new athletes; we've done that in basketball and football with the likes of Zion Williamson, Trevor Lawrence and Trae Young. And we feel that in boxing there's so many rich stories. There's so many boxers that put in hard work, but not all of them have an opportunity to get their story told. Maybe not until they're at the highest level."

Two Overtime Elite basketball prospects are projected to be selected in the top five of Thursday's NBA draft, according to the latest ESPN mock draft. Amen Thompson is projected to be drafted No. 4 by the Houston Rockets with his twin brother, Ausar Thompson, predicted to be drafted one pick later by the Detroit Pistons.

"I was hoping that I'd be a part of [OTX]," said Pierce, 26, who fights out of Atlanta. "I knew this was a platform that could introduce me to the world and ultimately that's what I've been needing. I've been patient. I've fought my way back. It's been a long, hard journey and now it's my turn."

Was first mentioned in February this year..

They have signed 30 boxers..

A nice addition to DAZN, as long as the fights are even matched and competitive.

Overtime Boxing (OTX) Launches On DAZN; Targets Generation Z Fans With Fights, Storytelling

Brandon Rhodes realized his company could help fill what he determined was a void in the boxing business when Rhodes read one of Shakur Stevenson’s Tweets in May 2022.

Stevenson, a two-weight world champion who has emerged as one of the best boxers in sport, wrote, “I wish the world knew my whole story.”

Storytelling is one of the greatest strengths of Overtime, a sports media company that typically targets tech-savvy Generation Z sports fans through social media accounts that have attracted more than 80 million followers across such platforms as Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok and YouTube. Overtime Boxing, branded as OTX, will officially launch Friday night in Atlanta, where a five-bout card will be streamed by DAZN, starting at 7:30 p.m. EDT.

OTX’s inaugural event will mark the beginning of a four-card series that’ll be streamed by DAZN each Friday night in August, all from OTE Arena in downtown Atlanta. The company’s mission is to make competitive fights that feature either prospects progressing toward contender status or legitimized contenders in its main events and co-features.

Elijah Pierce (17-2, 14 KOs), a southpaw from Midwest City, Oklahoma, will face Filipino contender Mike Plania (28-2, 15 KOs) in OTX’s initial eight-round main event Friday night.

“We’re really focusing on the next generation of fighters at the prospect and contender levels,” Rhodes, OTX’s general manager, told Boxing Scene. “What we do at Overtime so well, historically, with basketball and football, has been discovering new, up-and-coming talent, telling their stories and exposing them to a broader audience and helping build them up. In basketball, Zion Williamson is a great example of someone we found and covered early and has gone on to the NBA.

“So, we’re hoping to do the same in boxing, really find young talent, whether they’re unsigned or have a promoter, to tell their story over an extended period of time, get them fights they’re getting a fair purse for – not having to pay for [their fights], not having to travel to whether it be Mexico or the [Dominican Republic], things of that nature – and really just make it a career path.”

OTX has signed nearly 50 fighters, some of whom have promoters, to one-bout contracts as part of its trial run this summer (click here for its full schedule of fights: www.otboxing.com). The company’s plan is to get feedback from fighters, fans, sponsors and DAZN following the four cards it has scheduled for this month before it commits to an increased investment in boxing for 2024.

Rhodes, a former Gatorade executive who has served in various capacities for Overtime since 2018, worked with Overtime’s CEO, Dan Porter, to commit to boxing after Rhodes became consumed with the sport once he embarked on an amateur career that has included participating in the New York Golden Gloves tournament.

Though established boxing companies like Bob Arum’s Top Rank Inc., Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing and Al Haymon’s Premier Boxing Champions have made commitments to strengthening their social media presences in recent years, Rhodes believes Overtime’s business model will fill a need in a sport that has consistently sought younger fans for many years. Generation Z consists of people born from the mid-90s to late-90s until the early 2010s.

“As I got really passionate about participating [in boxing], I was obviously consuming a lot more of the content around the sport,” Rhodes said. “I realized that while there were these young, up-and-coming global superstars in the sport – the Haneys, the Shakurs, the Teos of the world – there wasn’t really a content platform like Overtime telling their stories in the way Gen Z and anybody else consumes that content. That was a clear gap to me. And as we delved further into that research, we found that, you know, boxing was the number four sport amongst Gen Z.

“And we also found that eight out of 10 Overtime fans said that they were boxing fans. So, then the content play made a ton of sense. Of course, from our end we didn’t wanna stop there, with just content. We wanted to take it a step further and be a platform for these young fighters to fight and get shown. That’s when we were able to strike our deal with DAZN, which we’re super excited about, to showcase them globally on one of the major platforms. But then also do what we do best from a social [media] perspective.”

From a competition standpoint, OTX will experiment with an “Overtime Round.” If any of the four-round, six-round or eight-round bouts on OTX’s cards result in a draw, an additional round will be quickly added to that bout to decide the winner.

OTX also will use an 18-foot-by-18-foot ring for its fights, smaller than the industry standard, which Rhodes expects to lead to more action.

Fighters also can increase their purses with knockout bonuses. Any boxer who wins by knockout or technical knockout will earn a bonus, but additional bonuses will be awarded if a fighter scores a knockout in the first or last round of his or her bout.

Streaming evenly matched, entertaining fights obviously is imperative if OTX is to remain in the boxing business. Conveying the stories of compelling prospects – junior welterweight Kurt Scoby (12-0, 10 KOs) and middleweight Lorenzo “Truck” Simpson (13-0, 7 KOs), for example – is also vital to OTX establishing itself in a market dominated by deep-pocketed platforms, namely ESPN, Showtime and DAZN, in the United States.

“Shakur Stevenson Tweeted, ‘I wish the world knew my story,’ ” Rhodes recalled. “And then Devin Haney retweeted it and said, ‘Same.’ To me, those are two of the most talented young world champion fighters. I don’t think in basketball you would see the same thing. So, that was a little bit eye-opening to me, that fighters are clamoring for more storytelling amongst themselves. Obviously, from a journalism perspective the sport is well covered. I think from a digital content perspective, it just told me that what we’re doing would have some legs.

“We’ll do cross-promotion across all of our accounts, of course. That’s Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, Snapchat. Wherever there’s a young audience, we are there, and we program those channels with specific content for them. We’re super excited to bring that reach to boxing and create content the way that we do best.”

Some KO from Pierce, a jolting left hand put Plania down for the count, Plania was doing well , clearly won the 1st round, Pierce was starting to find his range with his jab in the 2nd but Plania was still putting it on him until Pierce finished him out of nowhere in the 3rd, didn't look a particularly hard shot but caught Plania straight on the button

Pretty sure Overtime have 4 consecutive shows on DAZN, it's Albert Bell vs Presco Carcosia next Friday, super feathers, never heard of either but Bell is 23-0, only 5 KO but he's been a pro 10 years and hasn't had any real spells of inactivity, I've never heard of him, Carcosia is 11-2-1, 9 KOs, Filipino

Another 8 round headliner between 2 experienced guys though🚮, still if it produces a KO like the one Pierce served to Plania who cares

A dominant Albert Bell stops Presco Carcosia after 5 one sided rounds, Bell the much taller fighter controlled the centre of the ring, kept Carcosia at bay with the jab, was piecing him up and taking him apart with it while letting go the right hand and hooks to head and body, Carcosia didn't fight like a puncher, never let his hands go or took any chances and Bell just walked him down

In the 5th Bell landed a huge left uppercut which Carcosia ducked right into before theatrically collapsing to the canvas, I thought he was joking for a sec when his legs started going, it looked bizarre but it was a huge shot, he got up but Bell continued to piece him to until end of the round, his corner has seen enough by then and pulled their guy

Lou DiBella: Kurt Scoby Has That Eraser; Already Capable Of Beating World-Rated Guys

Lou DiBella doesn’t want to get ahead of himself, but the veteran promoter has high hopes for hard-hitting junior welterweight prospect Kurt Scoby.

The former college football running back has exhibited exceptional power since he turned pro in September 2020. Scoby has knocked out 83 percent of his pro opponents (12-0, 10 KOs) and has displayed a work ethic that DiBella believes will help set him apart as he develops from a prospect into a junior welterweight contender.

Scoby hopes to take advantage of the exposure he’ll receive Friday night, when he’ll oppose Spain’s Narciso Carmona (11-0-1, 6 KOs) in an eight-round main event at OTE Arena in Atlanta. DAZN will stream Scoby-Carmona as the main event of an OTX Boxing card scheduled to start at 8 p.m. EDT.

“He’s a really smart, interesting kid,” DiBella told Boxing Scene when asked about Scoby. “And he works harder than almost anyone I’ve ever seen. But he’s literally getting better every fight and he’s got the hammer of Thor, man. He can punch almost through walls. He’s developing as a full fighter. He’s developing defense, he’s learning, he’s getting better all the time. But he has that eraser, so he’s exciting as hell. And he’s fighting another undefeated kid [Friday night].”

The 27-year-old Scoby – a native of Duarte, California who trains at the famed Gleason’s Gym in Brooklyn – represents a different level of competition for Carmona. The 25-year-old southpaw has beaten only three opponents with winning records, and none that were better than 11-5 entering those bouts.

“I know that he can box,” DiBella said of Carmona. “I don’t know what he has that’ll keep Scoby off of him, but I don’t know many people who will have anything to keep him off of them.”

Australia’s John Mannu couldn’t keep Scoby off of him in Scoby’s last televised fight. Scoby knocked Mannu (8-1-1, 5 KOs) to the canvas four times in the second round, when their scheduled eight-rounder was halted February 17 at Stormont Vail Event Center in Topeka, Kansas.

Scoby stopped faded veteran Hank Lundy (31-14-1, 14 KOs) in the second round of his subsequent bout, another eight-rounder June 29 at Sony Hall in New York.

“For an athlete that switched from football to boxing, [Scoby is] developing faster than expected,” DiBella said. “This will be his sixth fight in 12 months. We’re keeping him active and part of keeping him active is that he clearly is a work in progress. But, I mean, he’s already capable of beating world-rated guys. I don’t wanna get too carried away, because he’s got another undefeated kid in front of him. But I’m very excited about the kid.”

Curious to see how Scoby looks when he actually has to go some rounds with those big ass muscles. Surprised they didn’t keep this relative step-up to 6 rds in case he gets extended a bit here. Dante Benjamin saved his 0 bc his step up came in a 6 rounder. If it’s 8 he loses for sure.

Not a huge fan of that stoppage, a fairly convincing win for Scoby nonetheless, Carmona not a total can, he's a tall rangy southpaw with quick hands and with a bit more aggression could've posed more problems, Scoby controlled the fight, walked Carmona down, landing the straight right in the rounds, his most effective punch, Carmona had a good 5th put it on Scoby but Scoby hurt him before the end of the round and came out in the 6th aggressive, was hurting Carmona and opening him up, the ref hovering before jumping in, not the worst call, Carmona was wilting but felt the ref was a tad early, good finishing from Scoby though

OTX Boxing To Double Schedule, Collaborate With More Promoters In 2024 After August Run

OTX’s four-card run in August will conclude Friday night with a main event that’ll feature middleweight prospect Lorenzo “Truck” Simpson.

It will not be the last show the company promotes, however, because these four events have only reinforced what OTX’s executives believed before its inaugural card was streamed by DAZN on August 5. Brandon Rhodes, OTX’s general manager, and Dan Porter, CEO of OTX’s parent company, Overtime, are more convinced than ever that there is a place in boxing for OTX.

The company’s primary mission in boxing is to showcase underexposed prospects in competitive fights and tell their stories through such social media platforms as Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok and YouTube, on which Overtime has amassed more than 80 million followers. Rhodes estimated that the company, which typically targets Generation Z sports fans, will promote approximately double the number of shows next year that it produced this August.

Some of those cards will feature fighters who’ve already appeared on OTX cards, but Rhodes noted that OTX’s success thus far has helped initiate talks with potential partners on other fighters.

“We plan to have continuity with some of the fighters we’ve already showcased throughout our first three [shows] and our next [card] as well,” Rhodes told BS.com. “We may keep them busy on some other co-promotions as well, outside of our own schedule. So, we’re definitely planning to do more, to go much bigger and better.

“And we’re having some really exciting conversations with some big names inside and outside of boxing that may wanna partner with us in strategic ways, some conversations with the bigger promoters about collaborating on certain things. So, we have a lot of exciting opportunities in front of us, outside of just the events we’re gonna do on our own, and we’ll continue to have those conversations.”

Rhodes stressed, though, that OTX will continue to work with promoters who have appealing prospects and even some contenders under contract.

“Our message is the same – that Overtime is additive to the sport,” Rhodes said. “We’re not trying to out-compete Top Rank, we’re not trying out-compete Matchroom. We’ll work with fighters that make sense for us. Some of them we’ll sign. Some of them we’ll showcase. But we’re additive to the sport as well across just boxing in general.”

Baltimore’s Simpson (13-0, 7 KOs) will seemingly face the toughest opponent of his career in OTX’s main event Friday night at OTE Arena in Atlanta.

The 23-year-old southpaw will meet Mexican veteran Vladimir Hernandez (13-5, 6 KOs) in an eight-rounder that’ll headline a stream scheduled to begin at 8:30 p.m. EDT on DAZN. Hernandez upset former IBF/IBO/WBA 154-pound champ Julian Williams (28-4-1, 16 KOs, 1 NC) by split decision two fights ago, a 10-round bout that took place in October 2021 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

Simpson and Hernandez, as in all OTX fights, can earn knockout bonuses and could compete in a ninth “overtime” round if their eight-rounder results in a majority draw or a split draw. Venezuelan junior featherweight Lorenzo Parra defeated Javon Woodard Jr. by split decision because he won OTX’s first overtime round on two scorecards last Friday night at OTE Arena.

“The ideas we had around rules have been very successful,” Rhodes said. “We created the KO bonus and that’s definitely provided some action-packed fights, from start to finish. Obviously, the [smaller] 18-foot ring has provided more action. And the OT round, we had our first one last week, went just as well, if not better, than anyone could’ve imagined.”

Knockout bonuses have been particularly popular among fighters, most of whom have applauded OTX for first-class treatment before, during and after its events.

“I think [knockout bonuses] definitely impacted the styles,” Rhodes said. “It’s made the fights more fan-friendly and I think it has made it more fun for the fighters, frankly. They’re all excited to try to get the finish often in cases they may have not. But I think fighters are smart, too. At the end of the day, they’re not gonna take risks that aren’t warranted.”
