its so incredibly fvcked up, the Mirpuri Pakistani community in particular and their conspicuous consumption (Punjabi Pakistanis have different expectations in their weddings apparently),. which is even more extreme relative to their wealth than any Indian wedding i have seen (at least with the bigger ones, the family came from a fair bit of wealth)

I went to a lad at my work's wedding a couple of weeks back

they had, along with the horse-drawn carriage thing (obviously!), about 12 prestige supercars (Ferraris Bugattis Porsches) and stretch limos. the procession held up the traffic on a Birmingham main road for about half an hour it was that long.

his family must have spent close to 100k on the whole thing, we reckoned from what Zain has said that they lashed out about 40K on cars alone.

they, the family, have hardly got a bean to rub together relative to those kind of costs. the dad and his uncles work as waiters FFS. I can only assume they afforded it by family chipping in, and when their cousins and nephews get married they will chip in to that in turn.

it was fvcking nuts. I stood there watching that fvcking procession in a stunned, awed sense of disquiet. It was like i was watching poor people burn their own paycheks and celebrate it like fvck.

mad.

Big money in Asian weddings in general.

Won't just attract the Asian community in Bolton.

It will all surrounding areas as far as miles away.

Blackburn, Burnley, all of Manchester, Nelson, Oldham, Rochdale, Bury.. We talking Yorkshire, Bradford, Dewsbury, Leeds..

It's gonna be a hype thing. "Oh look at us, we booked Khan's wedding hall" :yay:

yeh for sure.

Being that it's Khan's hall, gonna be pricey too.

He's gonna have a roof top hookah bar as well. He did originally plan to have a MyLahore restaurant/take away in there too.. Not sure if he's still looking at that.. and he wanted a Faryal Beauty shop there too. These were the plans as of few years back..

So apart from wedding bookings, which usually peak from April-September. Keep things ticking over.

Isn’t it kind of nice for everyone to club together and spend money on one glorious happy day that you and your family will remember for ever rather than fritter it away constantly buying consumer shite that you don’t really need

it isn't an either/or where if they don't have a massive wedding they're simply forced to spend it on playstation games and fast fashion

i can't watch basically poor people spunking £six figures without wanting to weep, irrespective of the reasons behind it, albeit I totally agree that (assuming i have the financial arrangements correct regarding a merry-go-round of inter-family loans) its heartwarming to see the family cohesion and commitment to each other that enables the spending in the first place.

It’s interesting to me, another colleague who came to the wedding is a Punjabi Pakistani and in their culture they wouldn’t go massive with all the wasteful excess with the cars.

I’m inferring it’s something to do with the Mirpuri culture being more tribal and remote and less sophisticated culturally than that in Punjab. Family honour and status being publically displayed is really important like in many remote mountainous regions EG Afghanistan. Maybe an overcompensation for the fact that the Mirpuri community is generally poorer than the Pakistani community, too.

I used to work with a Sikh babe who spent 130,000 on her wedding. Jaw dropping. She spent over a year talking about it every day. My wedding was 20 grand and that was far too much for a meal and a piss up.

Out of interest did her family seem vaguely well off at least?

I’ve been to pretty extravagant Sikh weddings, but the large group of luxury saloons that we made our way down to Luton with were actually owned by his family rather than rented for the day, cos they were decently well off. I was watching a load of lads on minimum wage revving up Lambos and Ferraris. It freaked me out so badly (obviously haha)

Middle Class but not loaded. They invite about 1000 people who all give cash gifts so think they recoup a lot of it then. Her family and fellas family definitely weren’t morons.

There’s a Bangladeshi family on my street and when the son got married he spent ages videoing himself doing walk outs to a rented lambo with his boys . It’s almost like he was marrying his car 😂

The people I know who have spent silly money on weddings all ended up divorced, 130 though that's just silly.

I know i won't be paying thats for sure

Haha

Its often style over substance isn't it. To brag on social media etc - but it always looks very corny.

I know a few with proper money, and you'd never know it looking at them. I think that's always been the difference.

Yeah I think in Khan Quigg would finally find the perfect foil. He’d come across like Peak Oscar Wilde in a verbal barney with Khan.
