Emmanuel Rodriguez-Melvin Lopez Vacant Title Fight Ordered By IBF

Emmanuel Rodriguez and Vincent Astrolabio are set to compete for a bantamweight title.

Just not the same title—nor any longer versus one another.

Boxing Scene has learned that talks for the previously ordered Rodriguez-Astrolabio vacant IBF bantamweight title fight have been abandoned. The sanctioning body has now ordered a new fight between Puerto Rico’s Rodriguez and Miami’s Melvin Lopez, who enters the mix as the next highest-ranked available contender.

Be advised that # 2 Emmanuel Rodriguez and # 4 Melvin Lopez are the highest ranked available contenders in the IBF Bantamweight division and are being ordered to participate in a Vacant Championship title bout,” IBF Championship Committee chairman Carlos Ortiz stated to the management teams for both boxers via official letter, a copy of which was obtained by Boxing Scene. “The winner will be the IBF Bantamweight Champion. Negotiations should begin immediately and be concluded by March 28, 2023.

“Any boxer who is contracted with a promoter, a network, or a state, tribal or national commission to take another fight, or who is ill, injured, under a legal impediment which could prevent the bout from taking place in the opinion of the IBF, or on suspension at the time the Championships Chairman and the President order a bout under this rule shall be considered unavailable.”

All four bantamweight titles were vacated by former undisputed champion Naoya Inoue (24-0, 21 KOs) on January 13. The move came exactly one month after fully unifying the bantamweight division in an eleventh-round knockout of England’s Paul Butler on December 13 in Tokyo.

The ruling comes just as the deadline was reached for Rodriguez (21-2, 13 KOs; 1 NC) and the Philippines’ Astrolabio (18-3, 13 KOs) to reach terms for their fight which was ordered February 1.

Astrolabio will instead likely face Australia’s two-time title challenger Jason Moloney (25-2, 19 KOs) for the vacant WBO title. BS.com has learned that talks are ongoing, with both sides hopeful of soon coming to terms.

Rodriguez largely fights under the Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) banner but is directly tied to local promoter Juan Orengo’s Fresh Productions. Their side will now enter talks with William Ramirez, the longtime manager for Lopez (29-1, 19 KOs), who was previously in line to challenge for the WBA title before the latest ratings update bumped him out of contention.

Lopez has won eight in a row since suffering his lone career defeat, a ninth-round knockout of Jose Velazquez in October 2019. His most recent win came in a ten-round decision over Jobert Alvarez last December 11 in Orlando, Florida, as part of a show on the eve of the WBA Centennial Convention. The win should have secured his place in line for a fight with Japan’s Takuma Inoue, Naoya’s younger brother and the leading WBA bantamweight contender.

Takuma Inoue will instead next face Venezuela’s Liborio Solis—a former WBA junior bantamweight titlist—on April 8 at Ariake Arena in Tokyo.

The vacant WBC title will be in play for a yet-to-be-announced clash between former four-division champion Nonito Donaire (42-7, 28 KOs) and Mexico's Alexandro Santiago.

Rodriguez previously held the IBF title, which he won in a May 2018 victory over Butler. One successful defense followed, a split decision victory over Australia’s Jason Moloney in their October 2018 World Boxing Super Series (WBSS) tournament. Rodriguez advanced to the WBSS semifinal round before suffering a second-round knockout loss to Inoue in their May 2019 WBSS semifinal.

The 30-year-old Boricua is 2-1 with one No-Contest in his post-title run. The win over Russell came more than a year after their August 2021 meeting ended in just 16 seconds, when a cut from a clash of heads left Rodriguez unable to continue.

Rodriguez’s win over Russell left him in prime position to once again challenge for his old title.

Always a mess when a unified belt-holder gives up his belts. Solis is 41 and hasn't fought a warm body in three years but gets put in a title fight in his opponent's backyard (re: the designated opponent). Lopez is ranked 64th by boxrec and hasn't beaten anybody but gets a shot. Donaire's last fight he got knocked out in two rounds. He too is ancient and Santiago might give him a good fight

Emmanuel Rodriguez-Melvin Lopez Vacant IBF Title Fight Tabbed For July 15

Either a massive event is being planned by Premier Boxing Champions for July 15 or the date merely serves as a placeholder for several fights currently in play.

Boxing Scene has learned that the Emmanuel Rodriguez-Melvin Lopez vacant IBF bantamweight title fight is currently budgeted to land on the midsummer date. According to correspondence between the sanctioning body and TGB Promotions, the fight is due to take place in Las Vegas.

“The IBF has granted formal sanction approval for the IBF Bantamweight vacant title fight between Emmanuel Rodriguez and Melvin Lopez,” IBF Championship Committee chairman Carlos Ortiz told TGB Promotions’ Tom Brown in an official letter, a copy of which was obtained by BS.com. “The bout is scheduled to take place on July 15, 2023 in Las Vegas, Nevada.”

It is unclear if Rodriguez-Lopez will be part of a Showtime Championship Boxing telecast or a Showtime Pay-Per-View event should a certain welterweight championship. Representatives from both camps declined comment since the fight was not formally announced beyond its promotional ties via recent purse bid hearing.

TGB Promotions obtained the rights to the bout as the lone bidder during an April 18 hearing conducted via Zoom from IBF headquarters in Springfield, New Jersey. A minimum accepted bid of $25,000 was placed to secure the rights to the fight, though both boxers are expected to make far more than the result of the purse bid hearing.

The winner of the bout will claim the vacant IBF bantamweight title left behind by Naoya Inoue (24-0, 21KOs), who abdicated the undisputed championship throne in January to compete at junior featherweight.

Puerto Rico’s Rodriguez (21-2, 13KOs; 1NC) previously held the IBF bantamweight title, which he claimed in a May 2018 victory over England’s Paul Butler. Just one successful defense followed—a twelve-round victory over Australia’s Jason Moloney—before he was stopped inside of two rounds by Inoue in May 2019.

It was a rough road back to contention, but Rodriguez made his way to the top of the queue after a one-sided, technical decision win over Gary Antonio Russell last October 15 in Brooklyn, New York. The bout was packaged as part of a four-man box-off ordered by the IBF, which included Vincent Astrlolabio’s sixth-round knockout of Nikolay Potapov last December 17 in Las Vegas.

Astrolabio (18-3, 13KOs)—who is also guided by Gibbons—opted to instead pursue the vacant WBO bantamweight title versus Australia’s Jason Moloney (25-2, 19KOs) on May 13 in Stockton, California.

The move left Rodriguez as the highest-ranked contender and in search of a new opponent in a bid to become a two-time IBF bantamweight titlist.

Lopez (29-1, 19KOs)—a Nicaraguan based out of Miami—answered the call, though only after he was previously in line to challenge for the WBA title before a February ratings update bumped him out of contention.

Inoue went on to defeat Venezuela’s Liborio Solis to win the WBA title, the first vacancy filed in the wake of Naoya’s departure from the division.

Moloney-Astrolabio is next in line, while a date is still sought for the Nonito Donaire-Alexandro Santiago vacant WBC bantamweight title fight. Boxing Scene was informed that Donaire-Santiago is also eyed for July but remains a fluid situation.

The same likely applies to Rodriguez-Lopez, which is one of at least three fights rumored to land on July 15.

As previously reported by Boxing Scene, junior welterweights Sergey Lipinets and Elvis Rodriguez agreed to terms to collide in a non-title fight. Boxing Scene has also learned there are tentative plans for the Thammanoon Niyomtrong-Erick Rosa WBA strawweight title consolidation bout to take place on July 15, as first reported by Big Fight Weekend’s Dan Rafael.

Emmanuel Rodriguez-Melvin Lopez Vacant IBF Title Fight Set For August 12 In D.C. Area

A long-discussed fight for the last remaining bantamweight title has a firm date and a tentative location.

Boxing Scene has learned that the Emmanuel Rodriguez-Melvin Lopez vacant IBF bantamweight title will take place August 12 at a yet-to-be-confirmed venue in the greater Washington D.C. area. The update comes two months after Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) informed the IBF that July 15 was in play, though mostly as a placeholder at a point when its summertime schedule was still taking shape.

The winner will fill the vacancy left behind earlier this year by Naoya Inoue (24-0, 21 KOs), who will challenge unified WBC/WBO junior featherweight titlist Stephen Fulton (21-0, 8 KOs) on July 25 in Tokyo.

Puerto Rico’s Rodriguez (21-2, 13 KOs; 1 NC) previously held the IBF bantamweight title, which he claimed in a May 2018 victory over England’s Paul Butler. Just one successful defense followed—a twelve-round victory over Australia’s Jason Moloney—before he was stopped inside of two rounds by Inoue in May 2019.

Moloney has since claimed the WBO bantamweight title in a May 13 unanimous decision win over the Philippines’ Vincent Astrolabio in Stockton, California.

It was a rough road back to contention for Rodriguez, who made his way to the top of the queue after a one-sided, technical decision win over Gary Antonio Russell last October 15 in Brooklyn, New York. The bout was packaged as part of a four-man box-off ordered by the IBF, which included Astrlolabio’s sixth-round knockout of Nikolay Potapov last December 17 in Las Vegas.

Astrolabio (18-4, 13 KOs)—who is also guided by Gibbons—opted to instead pursue the vacant WBO bantamweight, which left Rodriguez as the highest-ranked contender.

It also paved the way for Lopez (29-1, 19 KOs) to enter the title picture. The development was redemption for the Miami-based Nicaraguan who was previously in line to challenge for the WBA title before a February ratings update bumped him out of contention.

Inoue went on to defeat Venezuela’s Liborio Solis to win the WBA title, the first vacancy filed in the wake of Naoya’s departure from the division.

Rodriguez-Lopez will come four weeks after the lone other vacant title fight still on the schedule. Ironically, that moment will come on the July 15 date once budgeted for this fight, but will instead see former four-division champ Nonito Donaire (42-7, 28 KOs) and Alexandro Santiago (27-3-5, 14 KOs) vie for the vacant WBC bantamweight title.

Press Release

Former world champion Emmanuel Rodriguez will take on streaking contender Melvin Lopez for the vacant IBF Bantamweight World Championship headlining action live on Showtime on Saturday, August 12 in a Premier Boxing Champions event from The Theater at MGM National Harbor in Maryland.

The SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING telecast begins at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT and will see undefeated rising star and Capitol Heights, Maryland-native Gary Antuanne Russell taking on fellow unbeaten Kent Cruz in the 10-round super lightweight co-main event, plus sensational top prospect and Landover, Maryland-native Travon Marshall duels unbeaten two-time Olympian Gabriel Maestre in the 10-round welterweight telecast opener.

“This show on August 12 is jam-packed with action for boxing fans as they will get an exciting world title clash in addition to some of the area’s top rising talent in tough contests live on SHOWTIME,” said Tom Brown, President of TGB Promotions. “Emmanuel Rodriguez is hungry to make a second run as world champion at bantamweight and will be given all he can handle by the red-hot Melvin Lopez. With two of Maryland’s top rising stars in Gary Antuanne Russell and Travon Marshall stepping in for separate bouts before that showdown, this lines up to be a can’t-miss card at MGM National Harbor.”

Fighting out of Manati, Puerto Rico, Rodríguez (21-2, 13 KOs) defeated the previously unbeaten Gary Antonio Russell last October by technical decision to put himself back into position to fight for the world title. The 30-year-old originally won the IBF Bantamweight World Title with a unanimous decision victory over Paul Butler in 2018 and successfully defended it against the then-unbeaten Jason Moloney. Rodríguez went on to lose the title to former undisputed champion Naoya Inoue in their May 2019 title bout.

“I’m happy to have this chance to become a world champion again,” said Rodriguez. “We’re gonna go out there to win in spectacular fashion and my goal is to show that I’m the best fighter in the world at 118-pounds. My goal is to become undisputed at bantamweight, however I’m not overlooking Melvin Lopez, because he’s a good fighter and will come to give it his all on August 12.”

The 25-year-old Lopez (29-1, 19 KOs) has won eight-straight fights since suffering his only career loss in October 2019. Originally from Nicaragua and now fighting out of Miami, Lopez has fought professionally since 2015 and began competing stateside in 2018. Lopez scored three victories in 2022, starting the year with knockouts of Juan Gabriel Medina and Victor Ruiz, before most recently defeating Jobert Alvarez last December. Out of his last 10 victories, Lopez has ended nine of those inside of the distance.

“I’m very excited that the time is almost here to fight for a world title,” said Lopez. “We’ve had a great training camp and everyone has sacrificed and worked hard so that we’re at our best on August 12. I’m going to show everyone why I earned this opportunity and repay my team for all of their efforts. I have a lot of respect for Emmanuel, but the best man will have his hand raised when we share the ring.”

Fighting out of his native Capitol Heights, Md., Russell (16-0, 16 KOs) will carry on the legacy left by his late father Gary Sr. A member of one of the sport’s preeminent fighting families, Russell trains alongside his older brothers, former WBC Featherweight Champion Gary Jr. and bantamweight contender Gary Antonio. The 26-year-old has yet to allow an opponent to make it to the final bell since turning pro in 2017 following his run representing the U.S. at the Rio 2016 Summer Olympics. Russell defeated his most accomplished foes to date in 2022, stopping former champion Viktor Postol in February before a TKO win against former two-division champion Rances Barthelemy in July.

“When you’re a student of the game like me, you have to consider that each step we take is about more than self-gratification. We’re doing this for keeps,” said Russell. “Kent Cruz has to catch up to me, but there’s no need for me to look back. The only direction I’m going is forward and that means putting on a spectacular performance on August 12, and proving I’m the next world champion in this division.”

The 30-year-old Cruz (16-0-3, 10 KOs) steps back into the ring after a pair of draws against fellow unbeaten Enriko Gogokhia in February and then November 2022. A native of St. Louis, Mo., Cruz defeated veterans Erik Humberto Castillo and Travis Hartman following a draw against Carlos Mohamed Rodriguez in April 2018. Cruz will pick up his past ring history with the Russell family on August 12, looking to avenge an amateur loss to Gary Allan Russell, Gary Antuanne’s older brother.

“I’m very excited for this fight on August 12,” said Cruz. “I’ve been waiting for a fight like this my whole career, so we didn’t hesitate when offered this one. I’m coming in as the underdog and that’s what’s fueling me. I’ve been an underdog my whole life and on August 12 I’m gonna shock the world. When I win this fight, I’ll be in contention to fight for a world title and have my chance to achieve my childhood dream.”

At just 22-years-old, Marshall (8-0, 7 KOs) has quickly shown the skill, power and poise to become a highly regarded prospect in just eight fights. Born in Landover, Md., and now fighting out of Capitol Heights, Md., Marshall is trained by former contender Andrew Council and has already scored two stoppages in 2023. Most recently he dominated veteran contender Justin DeLoach via third-round knockout in March, his most impressive victory to date.

“I’m really excited to be fighting at home in front of my family, friends and fans on August 12,” said Marshall. “I’m working hard every day in the gym so that when fight night comes I’m 100% and ready to put on a great performance for everyone watching. My goal is to show everyone that I belong on the big stage, and that starts with a victory over Gabriel Maestre.”

A two-time Olympian for his home country of Venezuela, Maestre (5-0-1, 4 KOs) had an extensive amateur run that included victories over Brian Castano, Carlos Adames, Alexander Besputin, Oscar Molina and Brian Ceballo. The 36-year-old made his U.S. debut with a controversial decision victory over Mykal Fox in August 2021 before fighting fellow unbeaten Taras Shelestyuk to a draw last March. Most recently, Maestre defeated former two-division champion Devon Alexander after three rounds in April.

“I’m very ready for this fight against Travon Marshall,” said Maestre. “We are focused on the work that we need to put in so that we are victorious on August 12. I’m focused on having my hand raised and putting on a good show. We want to leave a good impression with the fans and move on to fight the big names in the welterweight division.”

Emmanuel Rodriguez-Melvin Lopez: The Last Piece at Bantamweight

Naoya Inoue’s arrival at junior featherweight is now in the books, leaving bantamweight fully in his rearview mirror. What is to be found in that mirror will complete its crystallization this Saturday night (Showtime, 9 PM EST/PST).

In the main event from the MGM National Harbor just outside Washington, DC, 31-year old Emmanuel Rodriguez (21-2, 13 KO) of Puerto Rico will attempt to win his second major title when matched with Nicargua’s 25-year old Melvin Lopez (29-1, 19 KO). Lopez has won eight in a row since a stoppage loss to Jose Velasquez.

Rodriguez has won two straight and enters off one of the finest victories of his career. Last October, Rodriguez handed Gary Antonio Russell his first loss, rocking him repeatedly and dropping Russell in the eighth round. It was the second contest between the two, their first ending before the opening round could be completed after a clash of heads.

The second bout made it to the tenth before the same unfortunate finish. In the sequel, Rodriguez had enough rounds in the bank to send it to the cards. It was a near shutout. The closest comparable victory for Rodriguez was a split decision win over Jason Moloney to defend the IBF title in 2018.

The vacant IBF belt is up for grabs this weekend.

For Rodriguez, this opportunity gives him a chance to finish his rebound from a pair of consecutive losses that threatened to throw his career off track. The first of them, a second-round shelling at the hands of Naoya Inoue in the semi-finals of the World Boxing Super Series, brutally relieved Rodriguez of his title.

After over a year out of the ring, Rodriguez returned against an undefeated Reymart Gaballo. The fight was unremarkable, and most seemed to feel Rodriguez had done enough to win. The judges disagreed and Gaballo went on to a shot at Nonito Donaire for the WBC belt. That was almost three years ago.

Rodriguez probably won’t want to wait another three years to get back here again. Lopez, conversely, has the first title shot of his eight-year professional tenure. Something will have to give.

Regardless of how it breaks this weekend, the remodeled bantamweight division will be set. It’s already a reflection of both what was and what is to come. There is still an Inoue with a strap in the class, just a less explosive one.

Naoya’s brother Takuma (18-1, 4 KO) won the WBA belt in April with a decision over veteran Liborio Solis. Moloney (26-2, 19 KO) added his first major title, WBO, in May by outpointing a streaking Vincent Astrolabio. Just two weeks ago, a third new titlist was crowned when Alejandro Santiago (28-3-5, 14 KO) pushed Donaire a step close to retirement with a decisive points verdict.

With a win this weekend, Rodriguez would likely be regarded as the leader of this field of titlists as well as a sign of how dominant Inoue had been over the field. Bantamweight went fifty years without an undisputed champion and nearly forty before Fernando Montiel-Hozumi Hasegawa even managed a single unification clash.

Reflecting on the state of the division before Moloney-Astrolabio, this corner noted:

The argument for best fighter in the world, regardless of weight, often has a few candidates. It’s part of what makes it fun to argue about. Whenever a weight class loses someone who is genuinely part of the debate, it hurts. How much it hurts depends on what the pieces left behind do with the new opportunity.

Will the four new bantamweight titlists in place after this weekend be happy being islands unto themselves or will they attempt to stay with the trend in boxing toward more unification showdowns? A Rodriguez-Inoue clash or Rodriguez-Moloney rematch would be easy fights to get excited about. If Lopez upsets Rodriguez this weekend, he exaggerates the facelift taking place and creates even more fresh matches.

Would any of these men be appealing for the more celebrated talent at junior bantamweight if names like Juan Francisco Estrada, Roman Gonzalez, or Kazuto Ioka sought new accolades and titles? No one has ever won titles from strawweight to bantamweight. Gonzalez or Ioka could attempt to be the first to do it in the twilight of their careers.

We won’t really know what is possible until we know all of who we’re discussing possibilities for. Rodriguez-Lopez is the last step in figuring out the latter.

Maestre' stoppage of Marshall kinda reminded me of Avtandil Khurtsidze's stoppage of Antoine Douglas (except it came 9 rounds quicker) - man strength overcoming the youngster.
