TOM LAMING'S GOLDEN GLOVES GYMNASIUM

Post by Brute »

Article in Sydney Morning herald, Saturday, 1 December 2007.

"Tom Laming's Golden Gloves Gymnasium stood at 49 Glebe Point Road, Glebe, from 1947 to 1988. Laming had connections with the boxers Dave Sands and Tony Mundine, among others. A pair of golden gloves used to be set into the pavement as a heritage marker. To re-commemorate the site and honour Laming and indigenous boxers, a new feature is proposed. To help save our past for the future please inform Andrew Woodhouse of your memories, at [email protected] or call 0415949506."

I trained under Tom Laming Golden Gloves Gym till it closed in 1989. I had 18 pro fights under To Laming. The gym is enriched in history. Tom Laming currently assist and coaches with my boxing team and still actively involved.

The Tom Laming who opened the Golden Gloves Gym was born in 1919. I assume there is a Tom Laming Jnr and he is the guy still actively involved?

Tom Laming’s Golden Gloves gym was the chosen training ground of many talented fighters across the four decades of its existence. Laming opened his first boxing gym in 1947 at the rear of 15 Westmoreland Street in Glebe, near the intersection of Mitchell Street and Westmoreland Lane.[1] Laming’s Golden Gloves gym was relocated to the upper level of 49 Glebe Point Road by the 1970s.
