Spud wrote: 16 Aug 2023, 11:48 There’s some good posts - don’t necessarily agree with them ….

Please remember Shalom started with virtually f*ck all going into a Sky contract so he had to pick “Out of contract fighters”. So the journey he has been is IMO ok.

Please remember those responsible for quality control for boxing on Sky sit in the Sky Sports offices … it is them who should have been firmer with Shalom & his team.

Whilst I have negative thoughts concerning the Sky Sports Boxing team they have brought some great fights from across the pond.

Another point I have repeatedly stated and its one that makes my blood boil … why the f*ck was Shalom given an EXCLUSIVEcontract? They had a real chance of bringing on board other promoters.

So again, its Sky Boxing wlho are to blame, not BenShalom.
Shalom would have got the deal because he would have promised all sorts and he started off well in the first 6-12 months.

Sky gave him all the U.K. dates because that had worked well once they made the move from multiple promoters to Matchroom. A lot of die hard fans didn’t like as we didn’t get as many shows on Sky and not as many domestic trade fights but it gave plenty of massive PPVs and took boxing on Sky from being mostly in leisure centres/occasionally in arenas (usually thanks to Frank) to almost solely arenas and occasionally stadiums.

I agree Sky should have been firmer with their quality control. Adam Smith got a lot of stick on here but he always struck me as someone who wanted the best for the sport and I don’t think it’s a coincidence that the quality and quantity of shows in the U.K. has reduced since he’s been gone.

Will be interesting to see what they do with CBS/Okolie 2. A network should have the ability to turn down a fight. The rematch is a real hard sell given how poor Okolie made the first fight.

I wonder if SKY are cutting back on the shows for financial reasons ? I wonder what happens to the likes of Okolie and Buatsi and all the olympians now they're not getting any shows to show off their exciting talent on ?
Once Matchroom had legged it I wish SKY had gone back to the old days of buying in shows from any promoter and using their own quality control over what was booked.
It all seems a really underwhelming start to the new season from September on all channels with anything remotely interesting stuck on PPV

I am unimpressed by shalom who isnt really a boxing guy anyway - used to do events or sell ice cream or whatver and somehow got this gig with sky which seems like a stretch too far for him .
Whilst I realise its a tough environment with many pitfalls and obstacles as very well described in earlier posts he does have a tendancy to be a bit naive - Frazer clarke debacle and now the same thing with riakhpore .
It can only get better otherwise sky wont want to renew the deal and someone else will get a shot .
Frankly I couldnt care less who the promoter is if the decent fights are made on sky or other channnels .

In business if you go off the boil, let alone if you are out of your depth, you lose your job quickly, look at football managers!

However the model in Sky is quite different, hell Adam Smith lasted nearly 30 years and still didn't have a clue.

Therefore I expect this joker to be there in 2050

Take football for example, whether it's lineker, Hansen or Motion, or boxing like gutteridge, carpenter or darke, they were revered by casuals and hardcore's alike.
At best Smith was tolerated by some, 30 years, a lifetimes work and that's the best he can do.
I expect Shalom to achieve similar success....

Pure laziness from sky’s boxing bosses, giving the monopoly of TV coverage to one promoter. shortchanging the fans, Just to make it easier for them so they just deal with one promoter.

Smith spearheaded the boxing coverage so takes responsibility for that. Also responsibility for then handing it to Ben shalom - a GREAT guy and so good looking!! as Adam would tell us at press conferences. What a putz

Maybe give the guy a break
The other fella has juicers pouring out of every orafice.

If you want sports as a package then SKY isn’t a bad deal

You want just boxing in UK. Come on now. It don’t exist

DAZN struggles in UK. Coz it is US focused.

Get real people. Eddie went for the Yankee Dollar. Canelo, and selling, yet again, AJ.

Don’t blame the next cab on the rank

I don’t think it is laziness from Sky. When they pivoted to having one promoter boxing on Sky became far bigger with record PPV numbers and pretty frequent big arena shows.

The first 12 months I thought Shalom did a decent job. He did have Adam Smith pushing from Sky’s side though and I’d imagine having that made Shalom more accountable and there was quality control. Doesn’t seem to be that way since Smith left Sky boxing.

Shalom didn't come from nowhere according to his interview with Tris Dixon...he worked the small hall circuit before rocketing into the limelight at Skysports.

Regardless of whether he has paid his dues to the game, his shows are mostly shit and he's bad for British boxing...of that I'm certain.

We had that terrible turd Adam Smith taking boxing down the wrong path for years on end...the noise got louder, but the substance deteriorated.

Now we've been presented with a woke wet-wipe in Shalom and if left to carry on in the same vein things will only get worse

golden_balls, it has taken many forms in the last 3 or 4 years, but Shalom fits the bill in as much as he talks about boxing being able to continue to "grow"...which is code for changing the face of boxing to suit a more varied audience. And being "inclusive"....and anyone with an ounce of intuition knows where that leads

Yeah, thank God Shalom come along when he did and rescued boxing because the previous 100 years hadn't produced anything of note

margaret thatcher, have you listened to his interview with Tris Dixon ?

I'm with you in that there's something entirely fake about his role in professional boxing, but he made it clear he worked with Carl Greaves (who is a grafter & a boxing man)...surely Greaves would have something to say if Shalom was out & out lying ? :maybe:

Greaves helps with the matchmaking for Boxxer. Of course he’s not going to say anything even if he thought Shalom was talking rubbish. I’ve never really thought Greaves is the type to do that anyway.
