Kiko Martinez retires

Post by jameswilson »

Not sure if it’s been mentioned already on here.

As the title says Kiko Martinez has retired. Best Spanish boxer I’ve seen given his longevity. Obviously not British or Irish but he’s fought and beaten a lot of our guys. I remember jumping up and down when he knocked Romero out in Atlantic city. A real road warrior.

Gotta love the guy. Gave me one of my worst nights as an Irish boxing fan when he knocked the bollix outta dunne for the title in Dublin against the odds. Remember thinking he was like a mini tyson. Long ago now. And been scoring upsets ever since. He's a legend :bag:

Seems like he's been wreaking havoc at world level for an eternity now! Very well-deserved retirement, I hope he earned well.

Just off the top of my head he banjoed Dunne, Hasegawa, Romero (?was it) and Galahad just to name his memorable KO’s around or at world level. And I’m sure I must be missing a load more good wins.

I wrote him off years ago and he came back several times to score impressive wins.

We hosted Kiko in the UK many times and he always gave his best.

Martinez had a great career :salut:

Stopping Gill right at the tail end of his career has to be up there, too. He got battered off Frampton twice but they weren’t easy nights for the Jackal.

My favourite Spanish fighter (classy José Legra and tough Javier Castillejo close runner-ups) of all time. A durable pressure fighter who never gave up, he fought his heart out against Frampton in their 1st fight only to get kayoed. Dusted himself off and 6 months later travelled to the USA to hammer undefeated and much touted Jonathan Romero to become champion.

Adios Campeón!

Brilliant career, just when you thought he was done, he'd score another big win. As others have said, I hope he secured retirement money, he deserves it.

Especially since he was probably PEDed up back then, his later fights after getting caught he was a bit pudgier, his best run being his second title run, he got a bit battle worn but still the ability to take your head off at any moment, the back?

Great little fighter. Remember his first fight v Munroe seems like a lifetime ago. He was due to fight Wayne McCullough at one point, that’s how long the guys been around!
