I have to admit I was bamboozled by the commentators. Tim Bradley in particular. It looks clearly low from this shot, while it looked borderline from the replays on ESPN. The angle wasn't very good but I trusted the bozos calling the fight. Amateur move
Let's be honest, Tim Bradley is always pro-whichever black fighter is calling. Same as other black American boxers--make any excuse under the sun to claim "their guy" was robbed.

I give it a couple of hours and we see "The Most Idiotic Woman of All Time" Clarissa Shields taking to twitter to rant, too.

I said it before and I'll say it again--anyone who thinks that wasn't a low blow, clearly doesn't understand shit about boxing OR, is deliberately being biased.

It was an uppercut landing on the waistband of Usyk's boxing trunks, I'd not call that a low blow, since we saw that type of punches in many boxing fights and they were not ruled as lowblows. That uppercut wasn't landing on the pelvic area.

I like Usyk very much but we can't have double standards regarding lowblows. Now the next opponents of Usyk , will know that Usyk has a soft spot and he doesn't like body punches.

Referee was doing a poor job. He stopped the fight too early. Dubois wasn't that badly hurt.

ref's job is to make it clear when he gives the instructions where a punch is considered good and from where on it's considered low.

if a fighter wears his trunks right under the tits obviously hitting the waistband is considered ok.

the punch landed directly on the waistband
and definitely wasn't hitting usyk in the nuts.

if usyk's balls are hanging up there, he got a serious anatomical problem.

ref was biased as fornicate and didn't do his job of clarifying shit up.

No double standards. That was the sort of borderline shot that Ricky Hatton responded to Kostya Tszyu with a full on the nut shot. The ref made a determination without the benefit of instant replay. Hopefully Usyk looked vulnerable enough that Fury takes the fight next after Ngannou. :OhYes:

I agree that the punch was not necessarily a low blow. It landed on the waistband, more toward the front of the gut than the sides.

When I first got involved in boxing (1970s and 1980s), that punch probably would have been regarded as a legitimate body shot. In those days boxers usually weren't allowed to wear their trunks so high.

Dubois was actually counted out! He looked like he could have beat the count but he didn't want to continue.

That punch 'finished' on the waist band. I'd bet the angle of the blow and where it initially landed squeezed Usyk's nutsak in his protective gear.

That picture shows it's clearly low, seriously low - no dispute.
Below both bellybutton and belt.

Still doesn't answer the question about what exactly is a low blow.

If Bellew is correct, and he probably should be given all of his years in the ring, then can we take anything below the navel as a low blow?

We already have thumbless gloves and perhaps we can also rule out low blows/illegal referee influence?

Andre Ward was regularly hitting Sergey Kovalev low with what were clearly illegal punches.

One in particular was far worse than anything we saw last night yet ref Tony Weeks seemed to have no problem with them.

Reminds me of something:

Having a wet ring doesn't look too good either.
Could've been a big disadvantage for Usyk and limited him and his movements.

There is an definition of what is regarded as a low blow, with the rule bodies. The rule (as evidenced in the rule books of the BBBofC, ABC* and ECB - likely others but I've checked those 3 specifically) state the HIP BONE as the marker, NOT the belly button or waist band of the shorts. So Bellew is talking shit. There are explicit rules, and none of them mention the naval. Whilst MOST people will have their belly button and hips on a similar line, some have their hip bone lower than their belly button and others have their hip higher. The "Belt" cannot be hit, it has nothing to do with shorts. The belt line is set to an imaginary line from the level of the hip bone.

Also Tony Bellew said anyone testing positive for drugs should be banned for life, but seems to have re-defined that "proper PEDS" recently.... so I'd take what he says with a grain of salt.

*The ABC references "hip" for the belt line, then mentions no punches under the navel, which is an inconsistency and should be made clear to be one or the other as people do have different hip bone heights

that body shot aside, the waive off at the end was fucked up.

dubois was clearly up at the count of 9 facing the ref who seemed to decide it was enough. very shady.

dubois is just not the type to protest or argue with the ref which is reasonable cause never in the history of the sport has argueing to the ref changed anything whatsoever.

You are not supposed to stay until the count reaches nine. And Dubois was still down when the ref reached nine.

He clearly did it on purpose, like he did when he fought Joyce.
I'd never call him a quitter like some Keyboard warriors who wipe cheeto dust off there pants all day like to do.
It's just that no boxer would risk to stay down longer then eight, if they really wanted to continue.

ya fighters do that all the time, as a way to try to save some face when theyre counted out. clearly he wanted no more and admitted afterwards he was disheartened. ridiculous to complain about an early stoppage, especially when we've seen him do the exact same thing before, it was obvious what was up

guy was miles behind , been down in each of the previous two rounds, kept himself on the canvas until meekly starting to get up at about 9.5, just as he'd done his previous loss. omg what an injustice it was stopped

It was relatively entertaining fight and Usyk never really looked in any trouble.
Dubois fought well enough but as the rounds went on it seemed fairly clear that he wouldn't make it.
I thought it was a low blow, Usyk isn't the type of guy that would fake that and he looked genuinely hurt.

Two things Usyk relies on.
His movement and his jab.
You cut the ring off and he'll be forced to do things he normally wouldn't, he could tie you up, slug his way out or use his defence to maneuver out of the way somehow.
His jab which he holds out at arms length at times shows he might be good with the hook too, shut that down and you have a different opponent altogether.
