Documentary on Ricky Hatton due for release Aug 31st
Re: Documentary on Ricky Hatton due for release Aug 31st
It's out now on sky. Gives a little bit more insight on Ray Hatton and the 'family trust' that sounds very off and you can understand how that hurt the family a lot.
I wish some of these would focus more on the actual boxing career though. Billy Graham comes across as a good guy in this.

Re: Documentary on Ricky Hatton due for release Aug 31st
I watched it today, the whole money thing with his dad and Billy Graham was weird. To me it sounded like Billy was due a percentage of the purse but Ricky’s dad had transferred money (without Ricky knowing) into another account and Billy was then given a cut of the remaining smaller purse. If what was said is true then maybe his dad was just being sensible and putting money in trust for Ricky’s kids but surely you would need the signature of Ricky to do that and from what Ricky said he was unaware money was moved. Either way it’s a shame it ended up with him falling out with his family and Billy.jimb0d wrote: ↑31 Aug 2023, 14:45 It's out now on sky. Edit. Actually ignore this, just been googling and Billy said he wasn’t paid at all.

Is there anything new in this doc that hasn't been covered already? His story has been well documented many many times before

I don't know if this is true, or if I am misremembering but did his dad not out do a lot of Hatton fans with the tickets to the Mayweather fight ? When did Witter duck Magee? Were they ever slated to fight?GreenLightning wrote: ↑30 Aug 2023, 22:49jtourettes wrote: ↑25 Aug 2023, 12:37He was an entertaining fighter no doubt, but he did avoid Witter, had a couple of very fortunate decisions in his favour and then bored me silly with his man of the people schtick.
British rankings as of the time of Hatton vs Magee
1.Hatton
2.Magee
3.Witter
Witter ducked Magee (and shat it from the pretty volatile and unpredictable Irishman at a different weigh in) Hatton fought and beat Magee getting up off the canvas for the first time in his career and really having to show some boxing skills to Magees slippery, yet dangerous southpaw counterpunching skills, Magee had just put a thrashing on Jon Thaxton in five rounds after Ricky went had that 12 round bloody war with him, that was a big statement.
By the time Hatton moved on, they were on different pathways, and I didn't really care to see it any more, Hatton would be bringing all the money anyway

Where did those rumours come fromtigermoth87 wrote: ↑31 Aug 2023, 10:39 Never liked Hatton. Most overrated fighter from these shores.
For someone with 45 wins, he has only a handful of good names on his resume. The rest is bums, no-hopers and cherry-picked defences. I mean, C-Level Paulie likely cracks into his top three victories, which speaks volumes.
His jokes were shit too. And he tried too hard to come across like a regular bloke from down the pub, when I always got the feeling he was a colossal prick.
He got very lucky to fight Kostya when he did, when he was still classed as a top fighter, but had clearly gone over his peak and was ripe for the picking.
His legacy is getting humbled by Mayweather and Pacman. And, if the rumours are true, Mayweather also porked Hatton's mum in the buildup to the fight.
Money Mayweather badgering Hatton's mum? That's scandalous on many levels.
Tell more
Re: Documentary on Ricky Hatton due for release Aug 31st
It's an obvious wind-up.
I was ringside for both the Mayweather and PAC fights and the difference between the two was startling. One of these days I will write about it properly.

I make an appearance on this documentary.
Re: Documentary on Ricky Hatton due for release Aug 31st
Quite a depressing watch for me, not sure what qualifications Ray Hatton had to be setting up 'family trusts' and whatever .
It was never mentioned after but why did Bunce think Hatton lost the flight when he made the throat slitting gesture towards Mayweather ?

I can only think Hatton made his dad power of attorney to handle all his finances otherwise Ricky would’ve had to sign for and be aware of these accounts.
Yeah Bunce being an after timer with that, trying to say Hatton lost his head and was fighting on anger, if anything the ref stopped Hatton from getting near Mayweather.
Re: Documentary on Ricky Hatton due for release Aug 31st
Love Hatton. One of my prized possessions is a programme he signed when he was on the undercard of Rhodes v Matthews.
Nobody cared how bogus that WBU title was, the MEN was rocking when he fought there. Only blot is not facing Witter. Aside from that Hatton was and still is a legend of British boxing and no one has come close to his popularity since.

I’ve got a signed poster from his fight with Tszyu up in my office at home. It was a great British boxing night.veriton wrote: ↑02 Sep 2023, 11:47 Love Hatton. One of my prized possessions is a programme he signed when he was on the undercard of Rhodes v Matthews.

I disagree re: popularity - AJ’s up there and Fury too. The difference with Hatton was that he had a hardcore base that would go anywhere - probably 25,000 or something whilst AJ/Fury haven’t had that but crossed over more to the casual base.

Watched this, enjoyed it too, brought back memories too. Billy seems a good guy. Ricky's father, less so.
Re: Documentary on Ricky Hatton due for release Aug 31st
I don't think AJ is anywhere near as popular. Hatton is a genuine folk hero whereas AJ is a marketing creation who attracted casuals to huge events but has never been genuinely loved like Hatton.maverick23 wrote: ↑02 Sep 2023, 11:55I’ve got a signed poster from his fight with Tszyu up in my office at home. AJs weirdo behaviour after Ruiz, Usyk and Helenius just shows what he is really like and that's not going to attract any fans. The love for Hatton was, and continues to be, real.

AJ isn’t as popular as he once was but he was breaking PPV records and selling out stadiums.veriton wrote: ↑02 Sep 2023, 14:03I don't think AJ is anywhere near as popular. Hatton’s fans were far more passionate but when he fought at City’s ground I don’t think he sold it out from memory. Obviously still sold a shit load of tickets but not like AJ did who sold something like 70-90k tickets in 4 consecutive fights with massive PPV buys too.
I think the only way you can judge popularity is in the numbers and, unless I’m missing something, they don’t favour Hatton

Apologies if caused any offence, was just genuinely interested. No worries, just interested in people who have worked alongside key figures in the sport.

Re: Documentary on Ricky Hatton due for release Aug 31st
I worked for Dennis Hobson for loads of shows and him signing Ricky on a contract was amazing ….
I worked on the Maussa fight in Sheffield and then the Urango and Castillo fights in Vegas.
You ask what Ricky was like, I say simply fantastic he was so kind to me as were Rickys dad Ray and Paul Speak his manager.
One surreal moment happened at the Maussa on fight, Ricky said to me “have you and Ginge (my son) eaten” to which I replied no. Ricky then invited me and Ginge to his room and along with a couple of other people we had a great laugh. Ginge was reading the Hatton/Tszyu programne, Ricky took it off him and signed “To my mate Ginge” then he signed it, there were painted montage prints of Rickys previous fights, Ricky did the same there. Ricky also signed a pair of gloves for ginge as well.
When we were in Vegas for the Castillo fight I arrived 5 days before the fight, I spent a lot of time with Ricky … a funny story … we were playing cards … the deck of cards were porn cards Ricky says “watch out lads, Spud has got an ace, look at him he is drooling. I forgot to say Sky were filming us.
Yep, Ricky was very good to me.
Thanks to working for Dennis Hobson on some big shows I went onto to work for David Haye
And also WBSS shows which saw me working
In Russia (Soch & Moscow), Latvia (Riga twice)and Germany. Have worked on shows in Monte Carlo abd all the major cities in the UK.
I have missed out loads. I started working for Franlk Maloney then Hennessy Sports.
Apologies for beibg paranoid.
