Inoue-Tapales: Talks Ongoing For Targeted Undisputed Championship In December

Terence ‘Bud’ Crawford and Claressa Shields are currently the only two fighters to fully unify two weight divisions in the four-belt era.

Naoya Inoue not only plans to join that short list but accomplish the feat in considerably less time.

Talks are ongoing for an undisputed junior featherweight championship between Inoue and Marlon Tapales. Both camps confirmed to Boxing Scene that there remains work to be done but plenty of room for optimism for a four-belt showdown which is currently eyed for December in Tokyo.

Inoue (25-0, 22 KOs) holds the WBC and WBO titles. Tapales is the unified WBA and IBF titlist and is the only current major titleholder from the Philippines, male or female.

Both boxers won their belts earlier this year. Tapales (37-3, 19 KOs) claimed a twelve-round, split decision over previously unbeaten and unified titlist Murodjon Akhmadaliev on April 8 in San Antonio, Texas. More than three months later, Inoue dethroned previously unbeaten Stephen Fulton (21-1, 8 KOs) in a stunningly one-sided, eighth-round stoppage of July 25 at Ariake Arena in Tokyo.

Inoue was just seven months removed from his eleventh-round knockout of England’s Paul Butler to fully unify the bantamweight division last December 13 also at Ariake Arena. The win saw Inoue become the division’s first undisputed champion in the three- or four-belt era and the first Asian boxer to accomplish the feat at any weight.

There is now a chance he could become a two-division undisputed king in the span of just one year.

Crawford (40-0, 31 KOs) went nearly six years between full unification wins.

The three-division champ—and the only boxer besides Inoue with an argument as the sport’s mythical pound-for-pound king—knocked out Julius Indongo in the third round of their August 2017 four-belt clash in Lincoln, Nebraska. Eight fights and six years later, Crawford cemented his status as an all-time great with a one-sided, ninth-round stoppage of unbeaten Errol Spence to defend the WBO welterweight title and win the WBA, WBC and IBF belts.

Shields (14-0, 2 KOs) stormed to undisputed middleweight championship status after her April 2019 virtual shutout of Christina Hammer.

The two-time Olympic Gold medalist needed just two fights to claim a second undisputed championship crown. However, the pound-for-pound queen had to wait nearly two years, as the pandemic slowed the sport to a crawl before she could get to unbeaten IBF junior middleweight titlist Marie-Eve Dicaire. Shields won the belt and the vacant WBA strap and defended her WBC and WBO belts in their March 2021 bout.

Shields has since returned to middleweight, where she retained her lineal/WBC/WBA/IBF titles. The self-proclaimed GWOAT regained her WBO belt in a ten-round win over Savannah Marshall in their thriller last October 15 in London.

Inoue and Tapales are both free of mandatory challenger obligations as none of the sanctioning bodies plan to order any such fights until after their targeted undisputed clash. Inoue had a two-fight plan to fully unify the division from the moment he moved up in weight earlier this year. Tapales made it easier after his win over Akhmadaliev, when he immediately called for the Fulton-Inoue winner and even entered the ring to join Inoue after his annihilation of Fulton.

Inoue-Tapales will crown the first-ever undisputed junior featherweight champion. The weight class was first introduced in the 1920s but never gained traction. It was reintroduced in the 1970s but has never had more than a unified titlist in the 47 years since its first title fight in 1976.

Tapales Arrives in Los Angeles, Starts Camp For Potential Inoue Undisputed Fight

Marlon Tapales, the unified WBA/IBF super bantamweight world champion, arrived at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) to commence his training camp in preparation for a potential undisputed showdown against WBC/WBO super bantamweight champion Naoya Inoue.

Tapales, accompanied by his esteemed trainer Ernel Fontanilla, is ready to embark on an intensive training regimen at the Knucklehead Gym in Las Vegas.

The proposed clash, targeted for December, has really motivated Tapales, who promises a thrilling display of skill, power, and determination.

"I fully comprehend the magnitude of this fight. Becoming the undisputed champion is the ultimate goal in any boxer's career, and I am prepared to give my all to achieve that. Naoya Inoue is an exceptional fighter, but I have unwavering confidence in my abilities and the hard work I have put into my training. I will leave everything in the ring and prove that I am the best in the division," Tapales said.

Inoue, regarded as one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world, has been tearing through the weight divisions for the last few years.

Last year, Inoue became the undisputed bantamweight champion with his dominating stoppage of Paul Butler. He would then make a decision to move up in weight, to 122-pounds, to challenge unbeaten unified champion Stephen Fulton in July. Inoue took him out in eight round to walk away with the WBC, WBO titles - and also became the second male fighter in Japanese history to capture world titles in four weight classes.

Tapales was ringside for Inoue's latest conquest. After the fight, Tapales and Inoue faced-off in the ring with their world titles.

The Filipino fighter became a world champion earlier this year when he shocked unbeaten Murodjon Akhmadaliev with a twelve round split decision win in April.

INOUE CONFIRMS HE WILL BE RETURNING, POSSIBLY FOR UNDISPUTED ENCOUNTER WITH TAPALES
https://proboxtv.com/news/inoue-confirms-he-will-be-returning-possibly-for-undisputed-encounter-with-tapales/en

Unified super-bantamweight world champion Naoya Inoue (25-0, 22KOs) has indicated that he has a date sealed for December to challenge Marlon Tapales (37-3, 19KOs) and contest the undisputed super-bantamweight title.

The post, which was posted on the platform formally known as Twitter, showed Inoue training and sparring. The tweet posted by Inoue stated, “It’s about time to start sparring in earnest and get ready for December!”

The tweet also suggests that he may have agreed to face Tapales for the undisputed championship against his divisional rival Tapales. This is indicated by Inoue using four crown emojis, which may represent the four respective titles that one must hold to be declared the undisputed champion in the four-belt era.

The four-weight world champion and former undisputed champion at bantamweight arguably produced the performance of his career against Stephen Fulton on July 25 in Tokyo. Inoue, who was making his debut in the 122lbs weight class, claimed a clinical stoppage inside eight rounds, scoring two knockdowns in the round, which forced referee Hector Afu to wave off the contest after 1:14 of the round. Victory saw Inoue become the WBC & WBO world super-bantamweight world champion.

Tapales was present to witness Inoue defeat Fulton and was presented to Inoue in the ring for photos while each fighter held their respective belts.

“I want to fight Naoya Inoue because I want to prove that I am a champion,” Tapales declared at the time in Tokyo following Inoue’s victory. Inoue himself was eager to challenge Tapales and become a two-time undisputed champion inside a calendar year by saying, “Let’s do it this year!”

Tapales, who holds both the IBF & WBA world titles, became a unified champion in his own right with an upset victory over Murodjon Akhmadaliev in April on points.

- Murodjon Akhmadaliev, 11-0, kicked his butt last fight to no avail by the corrupt San Antonio judges.

Hate to predict a KO in the teensy divisions, but that's what's gonna happen here. Great matchmaking by team Inoue, ie the crusty Bobfather

Marlon Tapales’ Manager Gibbons: “Tapales Will Beat Inoue In Japan”

“I will be the Japanese monster’s biggest nightmare this coming December in his hometown,” Tapales said as quoited by GMA News. “[I’m] so glad my everyday training always goes smoothly. My condition looks good, as well as my stamina, durability, punching power, and quickness. So by December during fight night, I will be better than ever. I will be ready to be Inoue’s worst nightmare.”

“Marlon is known for his never give up attitude despite the tall odds. He fights in any given situation, adjusts, and never fears. He will be coming for The Monster,” Gibbons said. “Marlon has been in Japan four times in his career, he is also 4-0, and he’s going to be 5-0 in Japan when he beats Inoue.”

Naoya Inoue vs Marlon Tapales undisputed title fight reportedly set for December 26th

The WBO’s Congress in the Dominican Republic is underway and the news is flowing. Per ESPN’s Salvador Rodriguez, Sean Gibbons tells WBO President Paco Valcarcel that Marlon Tapales will challenge Naoya Inoue for undisputed super bantamweight glory on December 26th.

No word as to the location, but we can safely assume it’ll be somewhere in Japan on one of the country’s traditional year-end super shows. Inoue (25-0, 22 KO) has fought exclusively in his home country since mopping up Michael Dasmarinas in June 2021, while Tapales (37-3, 19 KO) would make his fifth career appearance in the Land of the Rising Sun.

“The Maranding Nightmare,” a former WBO bantamweight champion who lost his belts on the scale against Shohei Omori, got pretty thoroughly whupped by Ryosuke Iwasa in a 2019 IBF interim title fight. He got back into contention two fights later by smoking Hiroaki Teshigawara in a final eliminator, then broke the Stephen Fulton-Murodjon Akhmadaliev duopoly with an upset of “MJ” in April.

Though he ostensibly doesn’t poses anywhere near the threat that Fulton did on paper, Tapales has made no secret that he wants the smoke. Good on him for not dragging things out.

As for Inoue, he’s in position to become two-weight undisputed in the span of 12 months, a monumental feat by any definition. Let’s see how high the Monster can fly.

Tapales can box and has heart, it could be an entertaining bout.
Inoue should get him on conditioning and pressure inside the distance.

If only the boxers at higher weights would follow the lead of Inoue boxing would be in a much better space.

He puts the likes of Fury and Wilder to shame.

tapa is a pretty solid fighter offensively, two handed output with lots of combos, some power though not really a major hitter. but hittable, prone to some sloppy spells, and just on a lower level in general than inoue. best scenario i imagine for tapales is that he'ss game and goes some rounds, but gets beat down for it

Tapales looks too small.
I like his style but he's punching up and having to burrow his way to the inside.
That takes a lot of energy.
A good jab could keep some of his lead up work at bay for a time.
