Golden Boy Fight Night Returns On Sept 7

In another edition of Golden Boy Fight Night, Raul Curiel (12-0, 10 KOs) faces Courtney Pennington (17-6-3, 7 KOs) on Thursday, September 7. The bout will be a welterweight clash that takes place at the Fantasy Springs Casino in Indio, California. DAZN will broadcast the event live around the world.

Promoted by Oscar De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions, Curiel began his professional boxing career in May 2017. He has won all of his fights since then and now returns to the ring for his first fight of 2023. Previously, he stopped Brad Solomon in two rounds on December 17 of last year. Curiel now looks to continue his rise up the rankings with a win over Pennington.

“I am thankful to Golden Boy for scheduling me as the main event,” said Curiel. “I’ll be able to showcase my talent against Courtney Pennington, who I know is tough. I work very hard and I want to challenge the best in the 147-pound division, and I will not be denied!”

Pennington turned pro in August of 2012. His career so far has seen him fight in the United States, Jamaica, Canada, Colombia, and the United Kingdom. Following a stoppage loss to James Metcalf in December last year, he returned to the win column with a split decision victory over James Martin in May. Throughout his career, Pennington has had fights at welterweight, super welterweight, and middleweight. Against Curiel, he returns to the welterweight limit.

Curiel-Pennington undercard

On the undercard, Manuel Flores (15-1, 11 KOs) takes on Jerson Ortiz (17-7, 8 KOs, 1 NC) in a ten-round bantamweight bout. This will be Flores’ first fight since an upset loss to Walter Santibanes in June this year.

In a super featherweight contest, Leonardo Sanchez (5-0, 4 KOs) faces John Alimane (8-4, 4 KOs) in a six-rounder.

At super bantamweight, Jorge Chavez (7-0, 5 KOs) takes on Marvin Solano (24-10, 8 KOs) in a six-rounder.

Grant Flores (2-0, 2 KOs) faces Jaleik Bogle (4-1-2, 2 KOs) in a six-round welterweight clash. Manuel Flores and Grant Flores are cousins.

Just days after inking a promotional contract with Golden Boy Promotions, Daniel Luna (2-0, 2 KOs) faces Alexander Gutierrez (0-2, 0 KOs) in a four-round super featherweight fight.

Seen Curiel blow away Solomon last time out, impressive, seen Pennington stopped by Metcalf on the Lopez/Warrington card but can't remember a single thing about it

Here is what some of the participants from today’s workout had to say:

RAUL CURIEL, NABF WELTERWEIGHT TITLEHOLDER:
“It’s a dream come true to fight on September 7 as the main event. I am now just a couple of steps away from my goal of becoming a world champion. I am going to close this year with a victory, and then look for a chance for a world title.”

MERCITO GESTA, LIGHTWEIGHT WORLD CONTENDER:
“I knew this fight with William “El Camarón” Zepeda was coming. I wanted this fight because he is an up-and-coming fighter in my weight division. I think this how all boxers should do it; not cherry-pick, but the best fighting the best. My family, my team and my newborn son are my biggest motivation. Watch me on September 16!”

VICTOR MORALES, JR., WBA INTERCONTINENTAL TITLEHOLDER:
“I am feeling good to go man. I am working on everything. The last fight against Diego De La Hoya just gave me so much more drive. It gave me the stage to show what I am trying to prove and we just want to keep on excelling at that. I’ve really started to learn the business side of boxing this year, just not the fighter-side of the sport. We’re just excited for this next phase.”

YOKASTA VALLE, IBF AND WBO MINIMUMWEIGHT CHAMPION:
“I celebrated my birthday training hard. I’m thankful to Oscar and Golden Boy for remembering my birthday! I will defend my titles and I’ll be more than ready to take on the biggest challenges in the sport. The fans will fall in love with me when they watch me inside the ring!”

Golden Boy Fight Night on DAZN is presented by Golden Boy Promotions. The event is sponsored by “BetOnline – Your Online Sportsbook Experts.” The event will be available worldwide to all subscribers on DAZN, both live and on demand.

Me also :) feeling a bit jaded this morning.

Was a strange stoppage in the main event. I noticed the ref was constantly looking at courtney and waiting for an opp to jump in and stop it. Looked a bit dodgy to me

Yep looked a bit of a fix - especially with 19s on the clock.
CeCe was up for it and determined not to get stopped, but the ref stopped him anyway :shame:

That was a horrendous stoppage, ref was choking to give Curiel the TKO, there was nothing wrong with Pennington, he was losing the fight but still had his wits about him, wasn't as all hurt at any point and he was tricky for Curiel who pressed but didn't look that great or effective, he gets the last round stoppage but only because of some atrocious reffing

Lousy card from top to bottom but that wasn't a surprise.
