15 Rounds Heavyweight Bout
At their prime, Johnson would make Ferguson look silly by outjabbing and countering him while clutching him throughout the fight to take a decision. What do you guys think and who do you got?
Jack Johnson vs. Jesse Ferguson
Re: Jack Johnson vs. Jesse Ferguson
I haven't studied Johnson closely because the quality of films from his era is inadequate compared to modern boxing films. I take the same position regarding Jim Jeffries, Jim Corbett, Bob Fitz, Jess Willard, and possibly even Jack Dempsey.
Boxing films from the 1890s through 1910s were made using primitive camera technology. That's why their imagery is often blurry and choppy. The boxers seem to move in fits and starts on those films, as if the action was recorded using different camera speeds.
That's why I think it's futile to compare Johnson, Corbett, Fitz, and Willard with modern fighters. What's the film evidence as to how good or bad those early heavyweights were?
As for the original question, well, I assume Johnson would outbox Ferguson with ease. Johnson's generally regarded as an ATG, whereas Ferguson was just a tough 1990s club fighter.
