Fury gets criticised for inactivity but Jack Dempsey only defended the title 5 times and didn't have a fight for 3 years (1923-26) while HW champ. He also went another year without a fight as champ (1922) but some people rank Dempsey very high. All down to what you prefer I guess.tonyevs wrote: ↑09 Oct 2023, 11:01jamesmcdonnell wrote: ↑09 Oct 2023, 09:37tonyevs wrote: ↑09 Oct 2023, 08:44
Just holding a worlds title belt, or holding it for a long time doesn`t make an all time great in the sport .. it so much more than those two things.
Ali is typically regarded as The Greatest. But Fury would have beaten Ali 100% .. that doesn`t mean Fury takes Ali`s place at the top of the mythical ATG list.
An ATG is so much more.
I still think it hard to pick 10 fighters above Fury, if we're talking about as champions, or being regarded the best.
John L, Dempsey, Louis, Marciano, Liston, Ali, Frazier, Foreman, Tyson, Holyfield or even Lennox Lewis.

As said, it's subjective of what you consider it means to be an ATG of a particular sport.Controversial wrote: ↑09 Oct 2023, 11:39Fury gets criticised for inactivity but Jack Dempsey only defended the title 5 times and didn't have a fight for 3 years while HW champ. Tyson Fury hasnt achieved much in the ring compared to other world champions .. and certainly not achieved ATG towards the general public to help his inclusion. He is still seen as something of a toxic brand, and the Netflix series probably feeds off that too.
People loved or were in awe of John L and Dempsey even though their fistic prowess when analysed left a lot to be desired .. but they transcended the sport.
Joe Louis and Ali were worshipped. Mike Tyson, Liston and Foreman just captivated people because of their aura ..
What has Tyson Fury got?
Looks like Homer Simpson and got a cartoon character accent when he isn't trying to impersonate his father. Nah Tyson Fury is well out of the top 10 ATG

He must not be in that top ten - an old Klitschko and 3 times a Wilder, can’t be enough. He’s all potential still! And won’t test himself against his contemporaries now, which just doesn’t sit right. All we can really do is credit him for making a lot of money.tonyevs wrote: ↑09 Oct 2023, 11:51As said, it's subjective of what you consider it means to be an ATG of a particular sport.Controversial wrote: ↑09 Oct 2023, 11:39Fury gets criticised for inactivity but Jack Dempsey only defended the title 5 times and didn't have a fight for 3 years while HW champ. Different times back in the 20s, there was a mystery around fighters and stories in newspaper about how tough they were so created an almost mythical story. Your opinion was often based just on what the newspapers would write and they can be biased and exaggerate. Social media and youtube just highlights peoples faults or allows you to dissect everything, there's no mystery anymore. Foreman wasn't thought of highly back in the 70s, like most fighters his stock rose after he retired. Same for Lennox Lewis, he used to get slated a lot but now lots have a different opinion on him. I agree Fury's resume isn't great but the HW division isn't what it was and will likely get worse as the years go by. Love him or hate him he can be entertaining, he knows how to sell a fight. Compared to some of the press conferences most fighters had over the decades he's more an a par with Ali for making it entertaining.tonyevs wrote: ↑09 Oct 2023, 11:51As said, it's subjective of what you consider it means to be an ATG of a particular sport.Controversial wrote: ↑09 Oct 2023, 11:39Fury gets criticised for inactivity but Jack Dempsey only defended the title 5 times and didn't have a fight for 3 years while HW champ. I don’t think it’s fair to compare these guys who box 12 round fights once a year and have 4 world titles to choose from to previous eras. And take every steroid and growth hormone available to help them do that.
It’s a different sport in so many ways.
Truth is you put Fury in the 70’s and it’s unlikely he gets anywhere near a world title shot let alone win it and then have to defend it against Foreman, Frazier, Norton et al as well other top 10 HW’s. He couldn’t do it.

Fury would have beat Ali 100%? Assuming that is a typo and you meant 0%.tonyevs wrote: ↑09 Oct 2023, 08:44Just holding a worlds title belt, or holding it for a long time doesn`t make an all time great in the sport .. it so much more than those two things.jamesmcdonnell wrote: ↑09 Oct 2023, 08:08So, name 10 more deserving fighters.Twinkle Toes wrote: ↑09 Oct 2023, 06:44 Agree, no where near the top 10. I think it's disrespectful to the great fighters of different era's to even suggest it.
The heavyweight devision has only a few long reigning champs.

Another thing really is certainly in the 70’s and 80’s Fury would have had to fight in America. Probably in the 1990’s too. You struggle to get him out of blooming Morecambe these days! You’d have probably got him overseas once or twice tops!

He'd also have had a mullet, sideburns and possibly a 'tache. Kinda like a dark haired, pear-shaped Hulk Hogan, which would've lost him a lot of respect/fear factor.
I have him sandwiched between Bruno and Herbie Hide at the mo, like a malty brown bread chicken sarnie.
