JOHNSON SORE LOSER

Post by Autobarn »

ok, it was a great fight. but he was hustled out of it in the last 2 rds. wonderful show, good night of boxing.

i think we should also remember that Johnson has won decisions more controversial than this. virtually no one other than me thinks he has beaten tarver. a lot of ppl think eric harding beat him, too.

look how he and his promoters have stooped:

"Seminole Warriors Boxing intends on filing a protest of Johnson-Woods decision

During the 11th round of the IBF Light Heavyweight World Title fight between Glen Johnson and Clinton Woods at the Bolton Arena in Bolton England earlier this evening, a member from Woods' camp jumped up on the apron amidst the action and was asked to get down by referee Howard Foster from Yorkshire, England, instead of disqualifying Woods. Hence the controversial majority decision victory for the hometown boy, Clinton Woods. "This is a direct violation of the IBF rules and regulations as it relates to members of any fighters corner stepping foot on the ring apron during the action. The fighter should have been immediately disqualified," said Leon Margules, Executive Director of Seminole Warriors Boxing, "We intend on filing a protest regarding the outcome and demand Glen Johnson crowned the victor in this contest or they should order an immediate rematch."

The once humble Johnson appeared to have started believing his own hype pre-fight, afterwards he was a sad figure moping around the ring. I thought Woods won narrowly but jumping onto ring aprons didn't affect the outcome in the slightest. Johnson's people are pissing in the wind here.

glen is getting up there in age and i dont think he honestly expects the result to be overturned, but he clearly wants what could be his last shot at a major world title by having mandatory rematch, probably in usa!

i think he deserves a mandatory rematch, especially considering some have received them for less reason than this...

yeah anyhow, who would object to a rematch? this was as good as Adamek-Briggs, IMO. Good that some ppl agree Clinton won - no one agreed with the draw in their 1st fight.

I don't think that this settled the #1 at light heavy. I do think it has netted Woods & Johnson another payday together. They will probably grow old overnight if they have another match.

This certainly adds needle to a 4th fight. God knows there was enough intensity going into this one.

Given that it would be hard to make Woods-Calzaghe, I think a 4th with Johnson might be the sensible thing. They could easily do that for Sky TV PPV.

The promotion definitely favored Johnson. Was meant to be a well hot ring & both guys had that tired early look that you get when it's sweltering. Reminded me of fights like Holmes-Witherspoon or McCallum-David Braxton where both guys are thinking 'jesus, what hit me?'

It was a close fight, and no way did he deserve to take the title away from Woods, the 9th round he nearly did but apart from that it was 50/50

I had Johnson up 2 goin in to the 10th but Woods won the last 3 to winn it 115-114

i wondered why that guy from the johnson camp got up and started pointing over to the corner and hollering.

i thought u got dq'd if u stepped in the ring. not just on the apron.

they're clutching at straws.

i think it was poxon who got up the side of the ring. know why? johnson had nutted woods in the mouth, in rd 11!

in a rematch, on a Hobson card, I can see Woods winning a bit clearer, without all the Warren manipulation

We-e-e-ell, maybe as "entertaining" but can you honestly say that the level of pure boxing and innate physical skills matched the Pole versus the Aussie? I think not. As Knockout Atrist keeps saying, that was two old men in there, and watching the fight again this morning they fought like it; canny, proud, but both physically shot. Woods lacks punch resistance and under pressure early seemed in la-la land, like a man in a trance, while Johnson is now an eight round fighter. The "world class" appelation repeatedly being attached to this display makes me weep for boxing.

I can't see either Woods or Johnson lasting the distance against either of Adamek or Briggs; just to set the scene I sat down and watched the Adamek-Briggs fight last night, before the ITV broadcast, and I'd put money on both to torch Johnson AND Woods.

I'd say last night's fight wasn't far off that level. No way are the physically shot. Apparently they were in a bloody furnace last night. They're so well matched that they had difficulty avoiding each other's shots. Not all boxers can have Calzaghe style stamina in the pocket. Anyhow, I'll bet Woods & Johnson equalled Adamek & Briggs' workrate, no wonder these older men were more tired.

Briggs apparently throws more shots now, so my argument could partly become redundant.

Weren't Woods & Briggs due to fight a while back in an eliminator for one of the many titles? I remember after Briggs beat Jorge Castro he said over the mic "Come on Clinton let's do it mate" or something like that.

Although the fight last night was exciting and entertaining i agree with Nels that Briggs V Adamek was something else, great fight.

From the IBF Rulebook

SECONDS:
1. No second may enter the ring and assist a boxer back to his corner unless the bell has rung or the bout has been terminated by the referee.
2. If any cornerperson stands on the apron or enters the ring during a round, the referee shall disqualify the boxer.

i said the same thing a week ago and about Briggs, Adamek, Erdei and Dawson all being able to beat both guys if they fought...and it wasn't met with a warm reception either. These guys are too old, and while it appeared to be entertaining, neither looked as good as they have in previous bouts.

Just out of curiosity, did Woods pick up the IBA belt with the win as well?

So looks like the ref should have kicked him out then. Looks like Woods v Johnson 4.

Be interesting how that appeal goes

It seems a bit much to have that in the rules to me. I mean its just a minor transgression, nothing really to do with the fight.

& there's simply no way that the red would allow an outstanding fight, that was hanging in the balance, to be cut short so inconclusively

In some senses it seems a silly rule, just for standing on the ring apron. I think it harks from the days when fighters had seconds, who would sometimes come to the aid of a stricken fighter to buy them time, or in some cases start swinging for the opponent or breaking them apart.

It seems silly that merely setting foot on the apron could provoke a dq, but then again, it is about setting that area as entirely off limits, setting a firm boundary which is not crossed by anyone. If they start letting people mount the apron, what next, mounting the referee?

imagine the uproar if Foster had stopped it? you'd have 6000 pissed off fans. you'd have a great fight fvcked on national television. the IBF would be a joke. it'd be the proverbial "black eye for boxing", that everyone goes on about. woul do nothing but ruin the sport' image

anyhow, there were definitely exceptional circumstances. johnson clearly butted woods in the mouth & the Donny ref did nothing about it (far as I - in my excited state - remember)

my guess: the IBF order immediate rematch. Hobson wins purse bids. Woods trades less & outboxes Glen over 12 gruelling rounds.

OR

Glen gets paid step aside. Woods faces Calzaghe, & the winner faces the #1, Johnson.

It's the rematch they are after, Johnson's camp will threaten to sue the IBF for not upholding their own rulebook and may well have a case, (though not in light perhaps considering the Mayweather and Judah fiasco), and may get what they want.

As good as Saturdays fight was, I do not really want to see Woods v Johnson IV. Johnson looked a very old man in there in the last 3 rounds lets be honest.
