Alexis Arguello vs. Esteban DeJesus
Alexis Arguello vs. Esteban DeJesus
15 Rounds Lightweight Bout
The Explosive Thin Man would overwhelm DeJesus behind his long left jabs, body punches and left-right combinations to either take a decision or stopping him late. What do you guys think and who do you got?

Re: Alexis Arguello vs. Esteban DeJesus
Close fight.IMO Arguello by close decision.
Re: Alexis Arguello vs. Esteban DeJesus
Agree. I would say Arguello by UD or SD but it would be a close thing
Re: Alexis Arguello vs. Esteban DeJesus
Another tough fight to call. I remember Arguello was outboxed and decisioned by Vilomar Fernandez in 1978. As for DeJesus, everyone knows he outboxed and decisioned the great Roberto Duran in 1972. Lots of food for thought here.
Does this mean DeJesus could have outboxed Arguello? Yes and no.
Most likely outcome is Arguello wins by a close decision, with many rounds hard to score. But if Arguello's having an off-night, and DeJesus boxes his absolute best, it could be an upset.
I say 75% chance of Arguello win against 25% for DeJesus.

Re: Alexis Arguello vs. Esteban DeJesus
If Esteban De Jesus boxers and uses lateral movement like he did the great Roberto Duran in their first fight, he beats the great Alexis Arguello.
He can't trade punches with Arguello. That would be suicidal. He got to mix it up by confusing The Explosive Thin Man by sticking and moving ànd trade when it is necessary.

I can picture an outcome like that. I wouldn't bet on it personally, but yeah...it could definitely happen. I have one question.elmersalsa wrote: ↑19 Oct 2023, 17:09 If Esteban De Jesus boxers and uses lateral movement like he did the great Roberto Duran in their first fight, he beats the great Alexis Arguello.

DeJesus stood 5'4" or 5'5," and Arguello was 5'10." That's a serious height differential, and I'm thinking Arguello would keep the action at the end of his left-jab. Are you certain Esteban could solve that problem by stepping-in and outjabbing Alexis?
Re: Alexis Arguello vs. Esteban DeJesus
Well, wasn't Vilomar about 5'4" ?

Also, Aaron Pryor did some boxing on The Explosive Thin Man. He mixed it up. Pryor fought very smart on that fight in Miami.
Movers were the great Alexis Arguello of Nicaragua kryptonite. Vilomar Fernandez did also the same. He boxed and also mixed it up.
The great Ruben Olivares of Mexico, was outboxing Arguello, too. Once he started to slug it out with him, boom! It was over. It's very suicidal to slug it out with the Explosive Thin Man.
Ernesto "N~ato" Marcel of Panama, also beat Arguello by using movement. At one time, Marcel did THE BIG MISTAKE to slug it out with the Nicaraguan legend and almost got knocked out. How did Marcel survived? I don't know. But, he was in queer street when Arguello hit him. Then, he started to box again and won by unanimous decision. It was Marcel's last fight.

Re: Alexis Arguello vs. Esteban DeJesus
Among Arguello's few faults were that, in some ways, he seemed rigid or robotic. Or Maybe it was his flat-footedness. Either way, I perceived that flaw in several of Alexis's big TV fights.elmersalsa wrote: ↑20 Oct 2023, 13:04Yes, he could.Joson wrote: ↑19 Oct 2023, 19:14I can picture an outcome like that. For example, Boza-Edwards, kind of a bouncy, mobile fighter, gave Alexis hell before getting cold-cocked. Also, Arguello's decision victory in a rematch over Fernandez - a runner - didn't look impressive.
Re: Alexis Arguello vs. Esteban DeJesus
Jose Luis Ramirez boxed him and, in my view, got robbed.

Re: Alexis Arguello vs. Esteban DeJesus
Which now I began to think about a Salvador Sanchez vs Alexis Arguello match in 1982.
How it would have happened?
If Salvador starts using movement, and he had great movement, he beats Arguello. Just like he did Danny "Little Red" Lopez in 1980.
But, if he gets comfortable and starts slugging it out with the Explosive Thin Man, it could be over by one shot . Arguello used to hit too hard.

Re: Alexis Arguello vs. Esteban DeJesus
Arguello was a great boxer, but probably his biggest weakness was guys that were quick on their feet. As elmer points out. The ticket to beating Arguello for De Jesus is definitely using his movement to throw off Arguello's timing and gameplan.Joson wrote: ↑19 Oct 2023, 19:14I can picture an outcome like that. Still no guarantee it'd work obviously, but that's the only strategy where he'd have a shot, and I think De Jesus would've been a smart enough fighter to know that.
Re: Alexis Arguello vs. Esteban DeJesus
You should start an Arguello vs Sanchez thread. That's a truly fascinating matchup.elmersalsa wrote: ↑24 Oct 2023, 12:06 Which now I began to think about a Salvador Sanchez vs Alexis Arguello match in 1982.

The question is, could Sanchez have successfully moved from 126 lbs to 135 lbs to fight Arguello in 1982? There's the possibility that carrying the extra weight might have slowed Sanchez down.
But definitely, if Sanchez could move as quickly on his feet as he did against Lopez, Gomez, and others, then he'd outpoint Arguello.
