Well. By beating Wlad, and then beating Wilder twice. He has 3 better wins on his record than Wlad has on his. What's Wlad's best win David Haye? Povetkin?si7dog7 wrote: ↑27 Oct 2023, 13:06Surpassed Wlad’s accomplishments?gilgamesh wrote: ↑27 Oct 2023, 12:52 Wladimir is undoubtedly an all time Top 20 guy. I'd probably have him in the Top 10.
Fury has arguably surpassed Wladimir's accomplishments already or at least is on par with them. If he reigns a few more years, and gets the other names that are missing on his record in the Win column it elevates him greatly.
Really
Ok he beat him in a bore fest
But surpassed his accomplishments?
Just can’t see that. Sorry.
Pray tell your reasoning. I’m happy to doff my cap to a good counter argument.

Yeah, I had forgotten Byrd actually. That's a good call.margaret thatcher wrote: ↑27 Oct 2023, 13:24 chris byrd?

Although I don't consider McCline and Oquendo to be particularly impressive wins.
Oquendo deserved the nod against Byrd, and he beat McCline by like 1 point. McCline was a funny dude to behold, a big hulking man that seemed to have a real confidence issue.

That’s fair and I’ll counter with guys to beat Wildergilgamesh wrote: ↑27 Oct 2023, 13:20Well. By beating Wlad, and then beating Wilder twice. He has 3 better wins on his record than Wlad has on his. I’ll say
Byrd
Mercer
Rahman
But that just re-enforces my point tbh
It’s a crap resume. On both counts
Neither is a great . Good in their time but NOT great.
It’s fugazi

ya mccline wasnt great, but if wilder beat mccline, it would be at least his 2nd best victim
Re: Tyson Fury’s real ranking in The Pantheon of HWs
Yeah I'd say he's at least right there with Stiverne. Stiverne won a title which McCline never quite did, but I can easily see McCline being capable of beating a guy like Stiverne.margaret thatcher wrote: ↑27 Oct 2023, 13:29 ya mccline wasnt great, but if wilder beat mccline, it would be at least his 2nd best victim
Re: Tyson Fury’s real ranking in The Pantheon of HWs
Mercer and Rahman were shot by the time Wlad fought them. Both of them had had their best years more than 5 years before the time they stepped in with Wlad.si7dog7 wrote: ↑27 Oct 2023, 13:28That’s fair and I’ll counter with guys to beat Wilder

Hmm. Let’s go a further level down. Coz these guys you are on about are too 250 at best!! C’mon now.gilgamesh wrote: ↑27 Oct 2023, 13:51Yeah I'd say he's at least right there with Stiverne. What about John Fury’s ranking in the pantheon of heavyweight greats? That’s what I want to know.

Re: Tyson Fury’s real ranking in The Pantheon of HWs
Tyson and the Furys are husters. He got an awkward decision over a 39 year old Klitschko and with the PEDs controversy which was quickly brushed aside. Then used the mental health comeback story to sell his trilogy fights with Wilder, who the entire boxing community recognised as being one of the worst heavyweight champions in terms of actual boxing ability in recent times. Also quite a mentally vulnerable guy, allowing Fury and his family to pull some wool over his eyes. The Furys know how to control their opponents. The three Wilder fights also generated even more interest because of the U.S vs UK dynamic, and racial elements, which helped Fury's name grow even more globally.
I do rate Fury, he's great for his size and knows how to enage an audience, but I'd rate him even more if he fought some of the young lions of his time.
So far his record is showing
No Usyk (not yet)
No Joshua
No Joyce
No Andy Ruiz Jr
Heck, I wouldn't even mind if he fought Hrgovic or Zhang, instead of that 3rd fight with Chisora.

Re: Tyson Fury’s real ranking in The Pantheon of HWs
I'm sure Fury would beat pretty much everyone @ HW apart from the greats of the 70s, 90s and possibly Usyk.
How can that be outside the Top 15-20 ?!

I think Fury ranks in the mid 20s. A win over Usyk would push him up in the teens. If he cleaned up Usyk, AJ, Ruiz, Zhang the maybe top 10.
Re: Tyson Fury’s real ranking in The Pantheon of HWs
If he beat Usyk, and retired. He'd be Rock solid Top 10 off of that alone IMO. Right now he'd easily be in the Top 20 all time for sure. His accomplishments are already better than many past Heavyweight Champions. Objectively.
He's got a long way to go to top the accomplishments of the cream of the crop obviously, but your guys like Marciano, Dempsey, Mike Tyson, The Klitschko's, Joe Frazier, Sonny Liston, Riddick Bowe.
His record as Champion stacks up favorably against those guys, and he's still reigning.

He's number 1
The ATG should be who is the best ever and would beat all others. And that is Fury because athletes get better with every generation.
Rocky Marciano may have been great in his generation, but he's get his clock cleaned by any Top 20 hevayweight today. That's a fact.

Fury doesn’t belong anywhere near a serious conversation about the greatest heavyweight boxers of all time.
What some people see, or choose to see, when they watch this guy shuffling around the ring, baffles me.

Obviously a lot of the posts on this thread are sarcastic and/or ironic.
If any of the posters are actually serious, can they tell me how Tyson Fury would beat Lennox Lewis?
I was at the McDermott fight -second row, awful scrap, poorly scored.
Tyson Fury is entertaining and obviously appeals to a demographic that didn't exist until a few years ago - and it's up to him as to how he chooses to monetise that, but can anyone give me a coherent logic about he could beat Larry Holmes?
