Vergil Ortiz-Fredrick Lawson To Headline Jan. 6 DAZN Show In Las Vegas

Vergil Ortiz is set to return to the ring at a new weight.

Boxing Scene has confirmed that the unbeaten knockout artist will headline a January 6 DAZN show versus Fredrick Lawson, in what will mark his junior middleweight debut. The show is due to take place at Virgin Hotels Las Vegas, confirming a month-long venue hold by Golden Boy Promotions with the Nevada State Athletic Commission.

Golden Boy president Eric Gomez previously confirmed that January 6 date during the WBO annual convention in early October. The reveal was made in hopes of securing a favorable ranking for Ortiz at his new fighting weight.

Ortiz (19-0, 19 KOs) has not fought since a ninth-round knockout of unbeaten Michael McKinson last August 6 in Fort Worth, Texas, minutes from his hometown in Grand Prairie as part of the greater Dallas area.

That win marked his lone fight of 2022, a year slowed by illness.

That very fight resurfaced more than four months after its originally scheduled date last March 19, which Ortiz was forced to postpone just ahead of fight week after he was hospitalized for rhabdomyolysis.

Ortiz was named mandatory challenger to secondary titlist Eimantas Stanionis after his win over McKinson. Their ordered title fight was sent to a purse bid hearing, won by Golden Boy last December and with plans to stage on April 29 in Arlington, also part of the greater Dallas area.

Ortiz was forced to withdraw from that fight date, and again during fight week ahead of their canceled July 8 headliner in San Antonio when he suffered from the same illness. It was immediately agreed upon by his team that he would no longer campaign at welterweight, at which time they huddled up to determine the best course of action for Ortiz to safely return to the ring.

Lawson (30-3, 22 KOs) has largely competed at welterweight throughout his 12-plus year career.

The 33-year-old Ghana native—who lives and trains in Chicago—has won his last two starts, including a ten-round decision over Estevan Villalobos this past April 29 in Arlington, Texas. Ironically, the win came on the very card that Ortiz was due to headline versus Stanionis but instead proceeded with a main event featuring lightweight contender William Zepeda.

Press Release | Ohara Davies vs. Ismael Barroso, Derevyanchenko, Barboza Added

With less than a month away for the return of undefeated, knockout sensation Vergil Ortiz, Jr. (19-0, 19 KOs) of Grand Prairie, Texas, who will participate in a 12-round super welterweight fight against Accra, Ghana’s Fredrick "General Okunka" Lawson (30-3, 22 KOs), Golden Boy has finalized the undercard. The event is scheduled to take place at The Theater at Virgin Hotels Las Vegas on January 6 and will be broadcast worldwide on DAZN.

As the co-main event, the U.K. 's Ohara “Two Tanks” Davies (25-2, 18 KOs) will fight against El Tigre, Venezuela’s Ismael Barroso (24-4-2, 22 KOs). The fight, which was rescheduled from the original Dec. 2 fight date, is a 12-round match for the WBA Super Lightweight Interim World Championship and is presented in association with TGB Promotions.

Making a splash as a newly-signed Golden Boy fighter, El Monte’s Arnold Barbosa Jr. (28-0, 10 KOs) will participate in a 10-round super lightweight clash. Also on the DAZN undercard, Ukraine’s Sergiy Derevyanchenko (14-5, 10 KOs) will participate in a 10-round fight. Opponents for both will be announced in the coming weeks.

On the Golden Boy Boxing Prelims: Ortiz vs. Lawson card streamed live on YouTube and Facebook Watch, undefeated NABF Welterweight title holder Raul “El Cugar” Curiel (13-0, 11 KOs) will participate in a 10-round fight against Elias Diaz (12-1, 7 KOs) of National City, California. In an eight-round cruiserweight fight, Tristan Kalkreuth (12-1, 9 KOs) will return to fight after a vicious fifth-round knockout victory last October 2023. He will face Tacoma, Washington’s Marquise Weston (15-2-1, 8 KOs).

Also in the prelims, Santa Ana’s Johnny “Sugar Cane” Cañas (2-0, 1 KO) will participate in a four-round super lightweight fight. Opening the fight night and making their professional debut, Emiliano Gandara of Dallas, Texas will participate in a four-round super welterweight fight. Opponents for both will be announced soon.

Sergiy Derevyanchenko Injured, Pulled From Jan. 6 Ortiz-Lawson DAZN Show

Sergiy Derevyanchenko will have to wait a little longer in a bid to return to the win column.

Boxing Scene has learned that the former three-time middleweight title challenger will no longer appear on the January 6 Vergil Ortiz-Fredrick Lawson DAZN show from Virgin Hotels Las Vegas in Las Vegas, Nevada. An undisclosed injury suffered roughly one week ago during training camp forced the Ukrainian bruiser off the undercard, with hopes of a return on a forthcoming Golden Boy Promotions show.

The date would have marked Derevyanchenko’s quickest turnaround in more than four years. Inactivity has crippled his once promising career, as he has fought just once per year since 2020.

His last bout came in the leading candidate for 2023 Fight of the Year, a heartbreaking twelve-round, unanimous decision defeat to former WBO junior middleweight titlist Jaime Munguia. A twelfth-round knockdown provided the margin of victory on the cards for Tijuana’s Munguia (42-0, 33 KOs), who will next face England’s John Ryder atop a January 27 DAZN show from Footprint Center in Phoenix, Arizona.

It remains unclear as this goes publication whether Derevyanchenko (14-5, 10 KOs) will be healed in time to land on that card or if he will have to wait a little longer into the first quarter of the new year.

All five defeats have come in the last seven fights for Derevyanchenko, a 38-year-old Brooklyn-based boxer who represented Ukraine in the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Derevyanchenko came up just short in an October 2018 vacant IBF middleweight title fight bid versus stablemate Daniel Jacobs at Madison Square Garden Theater in New York City. He fought in the main room for the same title one year later and was considered unlucky to not get the decision versus Gennadiy Golovkin in their October 2019 scorcher that was recognized by Boxing Scene as the 2019 Fight of the Year.

A more convincing defeat came in his September 2020 unanimous decision to unbeaten WBC middleweight titlist Jermall Charlo. The loss was followed by a 14-plus month ring absence before he dropped a ten-round majority decision to Carlos Adames. A win would have set up a 2022 meeting with Munguia; he instead settled for a comeback fight in a ten-round decision over Joshua Conley last July at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center. More than ten months later, he fell just short versus Munguia.

The balance of Saturday’s DAZN show remains intact. Ortiz (19-0, 19 KOs) ends a layoff of more than a year as he debuts as a junior middleweight. His scheduled 12-round main event versus Lawson (30-3, 22 KOs) represents the first U..S. televised/streamed event of the new year.

I've seen Lawson a couple of times over the years and he ain't all that, scraped a split against Prescott courtesy of a bogus KD, that was nigh on 10 years ago, I know Ortiz has been inactive and had serious health issues but he'll have needed to drop off something spectacular to struggle here let alone lose

Love Ortiz need to see him at the top level asap

Oscar is one of the slimiest pricks in boxing, doesn't give a sh1t about his fighters, been waxing lyrical about Ortiz the last couple of days clearly to wind up Garcia even though he's been all over Ryan the last few years barely caring about Vergil, you can spot his game a mile off

First fight should have been stopped a few rounds earlier.
It was not competitive and the losing fighter had a badly damaged left eye.
WTF was the ref/corner waiting for?

Seen Curiel a few times now, I like him

Freddie Roach looking better now than I've seen him for years, you often hear about cures for Parkinson's, I'd like to think that his meds have improved, he didn't speak much mind but what he did say sounded his regular self

Yeah pretty dominant. :salut:
Thought El Ingles might fiddle his way thru' in the first two rounds, but Curiel just cranked it up and got the stoppage.
Stops anything at this level needs to step up a bit..
