Paulie takes the count
Paulie takes the count
Burt Young, who played Paulie in the Rocky movies, has died at the age of 83. Burt was a brilliant actor and gave real credibility to the series.

32 and 2 as an am apparently, and reported as either 12 and 0 or 17 and 0 as a pro, fighting under alaises.
Comanaged a fighter to a title shot vs Spinks too https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm ... story.html
Re: Paulie takes the count
A good actor, but his fighting career is a tall tale. He probably had some amateur fights, but there's zero evidence of him ever having a pro fight.SeanBrennan wrote: ↑29 Oct 2023, 09:1232 and 2 as an am apparently, and reported as either 12 and 0 or 17 and 0 as a pro, fighting under alaises.

That doesn't mean it didn't happen. My friend's father fought professionally, but the fights aren't listed on BoxRec. I suppose it depends on you definition of professional. Is getting paid for an unsanctioned boxing match a professional contest?

There an interview on YouTube where he says he was unbeaten in 17 pro fights and had his first pro fight aged 16 before going into the Marine Corps. Very hard to check on, he said he boxed under a false name.hhaehre wrote: ↑02 Nov 2023, 07:43A good actor, but his fighting career is a tall tale. uh ya, most likely bullsh!t. done countless of times by entertainers
ask yourself, if some rando just made the same claim about themself, how much more evidence is there to support bert's story being true than their claim

Re: Paulie takes the count
so what are the fake names he boxed under? locations/dates of fights? any photos from his pro fights
surely if a famous actor had such a decorated fighting career someone would've been able to land on something by now

Could be BS but who really knows. No social media in those days and easy to have fights that not reported. There are thousands of fighters missing from boxrec records and likely thousands of errors too.margaret thatcher wrote: ↑05 Nov 2023, 04:38 uh ya, most likely bullsh!t. done countless of times by entertainers

Doesn’t have to be a decorated career. He wasn’t famous until much later in life, he wasn’t famous as a teenager in the 1950smargaret thatcher wrote: ↑05 Nov 2023, 04:42 so what are the fake names he boxed under? locations/dates of fights? any photos from his pro fights
surely a famous actor with such a decorated fighting career could provide some hard evidence if there was truth to it

Re: Paulie takes the count
i was a 33-2 amateur and 17-0 as a pro, there, im about as proven as bert now with as much evidence to back it up
he didn't box in the 1800s. there should be some evidence of a 33-2 am career and 17-0 pro career existing if it indeed actually happened. what are some of the names he boxed under? no one even took a photo of him in a fight? no past opponent said anything about having fought paulie from rocky? his claims have about as much credibility as if anyone made them up

You’re assuming there aren’t photos. Maybe his family have plenty, just because they aren’t on social media doesn’t mean they don’t exist. Try googling the Vietnam War on google news and you won’t find much apart from more recent articles looking back on it, doesn’t mean it didn’t happen.margaret thatcher wrote: ↑05 Nov 2023, 04:46 i was a 33-2 amateur and 17-0 as a pro, there, im about as proven as bert now with as much evidence to back it up

Re: Paulie takes the count
he's the famous paulie, no one else put a photo out there? he spoke about his career and talked about how succesful he was to the press, you'd think someone like that would be proud to provide a shred of evidence it existed, if it did. if not him, what about a photographer or writer or past opponent or something that was involved in one of his fights?Controversial wrote: ↑05 Nov 2023, 04:52You’re assuming there aren’t photos. Re: Paulie takes the count
Why would they. If someone I knew was famous I wouldnt post images I have online of them. Plus maybe people didn’t make the connection it was him if he was using a false name. Remember this was the 1950s too, people didn’t carry around cameras like today. I boxed a bit as a teenager too and have zero photos of myself, didn’t cross my mind at the time to take photos and it wasn’t that long ago in comparison. It could all be lies but to say it didn’t happen as there are no photos is a weak argument imo.Controversial wrote: ↑05 Nov 2023, 04:44Doesn’t have to be a decorated career. So again, what evidence is there that this 33-2 amateur career and unbeaten pro career actually happened, rather than being totally made up?

i didn't say that no photos means it didnt happen. i'm saying that the utter lack of evidence in any way leads me to believe it's total bullsh!t. every bloke might as well have been a 33-2 am and 17-0 pro if the standard of truth is to take people at their word and not be bothered by whether there's a shred of evidence supporting it

Re: Paulie takes the count
what would be more interesting to me is someone who claims to have been a terrible boxer, with a record like 3-25 and lots of ko losses, but there is no evidence available for it. funny how these mystery record guys are so much more often ones claiming lofty impressive numbers like 50-2
maybe problems documenting boxing results only impact successful boxers though

Re: Paulie takes the count
Yeah I get that, it’s human nature to exaggerate things too. He wouldn’t say what name he boxed under so maybe he did box and there is evidence he lost blowing his undefeated claim out the water.
Re: Paulie takes the count
I don't think he had a pro career and certainly not a 17-0 record, but he probably had some boxing experience. I think it has been verified that he showed up at a Chuvalo training camp and apparently Chuvalo took a liking to him and sparred a few rounds with him. He probably took it real easy on Paulie, but even so I think it's safe to assume that Paulie would've had to have possessed some boxing experience to be put in the ring with Chuvalo.Controversial wrote: ↑05 Nov 2023, 05:11 Who knows, could all be utter crap, could be true or partially true but exaggerated.
If he had manufactured something like a 9-2 amateur record and a 2-1 pro record I would have been more inclined to belive him. A 33-2 am and 17-0 pro record would have been easy to prove had it been real.

Who knows, he refused to give the name he fought under and boxrec is missing lots of fights. He is likely exaggerating though as why be secretive about it if you were undefeatedhhaehre wrote: ↑08 Nov 2023, 07:20I don't think he had a pro career and certainly not a 17-0 record, but he probably had some boxing experience.
