Heavyweights & Others Known Only For Losses by Casual Fans

Post by Tony1244 »

Most of these names will be HWs as historically most casual fans were more familiar with the HW division.

Jerry Quarry- Most casual fans remember his Ali and Frazier KOs and not his solid wins.

Marvis Frazier- Excellent amateur and also had a few good wins as a pro. Remembered for his KO by 1 losses to Tyson and Holmes.

Duane Bobick. Beat Holmes and Stevenson as an amateur. A few good wins as a pro. Norton KO by 1

Cooney- Holmes.

John Mugabi- His loss to Hagler.

Joe Bugner comes to mind. Casual fans know him because of his Kuala Lumpur loss to Muhammad Ali.

It's heavyweights not middleweights as McClellan doesn't belong on that list.

Hell I'm a Hardcore fan, and some of the guys that Wladimir Klitschko defended against I only saw in those fights. Like Alex Leapai for instance. I don't think I ever saw that guy fight anyone else.

Does anybody remember anything of Michael Grant's career other than the Lewis KO?

Even though he was just a Journeyman. I only ever saw Steve Zouski lose to Mike Tyson and George Foreman.

The biggest thing I remember was Grant getting completely outclassed by Golata.
Getting knocked down a couple of time losing most of the rounds. Then a flash knockdown of Golata and Golata telling the ref I want to quit.
That was more memorable than any of his losses

If it weren't for the Klitschkos those cans would have been the champions. Instead of the Klitschko era, we'd have had the John Ruiz, Sam Peter, and Nikolai Valuev era.

Btw, they didn't fight Ruiz or Valuev. The WBA was sorta pointless at that point with Don King paraziting on it with the Ruiz clinchfests and the Valuev freakshows.

The G-Man......the reason he was so feared/respected seems to have been forgotten by the casual crowd.
All about the "tragic" Benn fight.

Golota. 2 DQ's vs Bowe, early KO losses to Tyson and Lewis and the Grant one. All more memorable than any of his wins.

Sonny Liston. To most people he's just the guy Ali won the title from.

Exactly. Sonny Liston was a great champion, but, his losses against the great Muhammad Ali, especially, the second fight, like it blurred all his great accomplishments in the ring.

Liston destroyed all the top heavyweight contenders in his path. He cleaned up the division before fighting Floyd Patterson for the heavy title.

But, still, he is just remembered mostly of that fiasco in Lewiston, ME.

(Andy "Hawk" Price) comes to mind immediately for myself, pertaining to this topic thread question.

Obviously he's best known for that Brutal 1st round Ko Loss to SRL in 1979.
Cosell's commentary only enhanced the whole moment. For better or worse.
Always was very sad to watch Andy get beat down so brutally like that though.

Especially because he was starting to get up from the canvas, near the ring-post where he was initially laid-out....
Only to suddenly basically Pass Out(Horror Movie Style), once his legs told him "Sorry, I can't get you off the floor".
I mean, "Andy Price" actually had Previous Wins versus "Pipino Cuevas" and "Carlos Palomino"..!!

Marvis was a pretty bloody good fighter in fairness, I had a look at his record and was shocked that fans now make him out to be hapless. You wouldn't beat Tillis and Smith if you didn't have a bit about you
