Ryan Garcia-Oscar Duarte Set For December 2 In San Antonio

Golden Boy Promotions has settled on an opponent and a new date for the company’s biggest star.

Boxing Scene has confirmed that plans are finalized for a Ryan Garcia-Oscar Duarte junior welterweight bout to headline a December 2 DAZN show from Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas. Golden Boy chairman and co-founder Oscar De La Hoya revealed the plans to ESPN.com’s Mike Coppinger for Garcia’s first fight back since his lone career defeat and as the two sides remain in a legal battle.

Duarte (26-1-1, 21KOs) was previously teased as a frontrunner to land the assignment, though at a time when the target date was November 18.

Golden Boy had holds on venues in both Texas and Arizona but have now settled on Alamodome, where Garcia returned last April 9 after a 15-month layoff to soundly outpoint streaking contender Emmanuel Tagoe.

Garcia went on to stop Javier Fortuna in the sixth round of their July 16 clash in Los Angeles. The fight marked his last appearance on a DAZN-exclusive telecast.

His lone fight of 2023 came in an April 22 seventh-round knockout defeat to Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis (29-0, 27KOs). The Showtime Pay-Per-View headliner remains the highest grossing event of the year, with a reported 1.2 million PPV units sold and a live gate of roughly $22.8 million in ticket sales from a sold-out crowd of 20,842 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

The fight remains the year’s best-selling event and cemented Davis’ status as the leading draw in the industry.

It also solidified Garcia’s drawing power, though the night came with considerable fallout. The well-publicized event featured the first signs of trouble between promoter and fighter.

Hall of Famers and Golden Boy heads Oscar De La Hoya and Bernard Hopkins were both fixtures throughout the promotion but noticeably absent from the post-fight press conference, as was Joe Goossen, Garcia’s trainer for more than a year. Garcia and Goossen subsequently parted ways, citing an amicable split.

The fallout between Garcia and his estranged promoter was anything but that. De La Hoya took their beef public, calling out his star client on Twitter prior to a still-active lawsuit filed against the Victorville, California native.

It is believed that the two sides will find common ground for the sake of Garcia fighting later this fall, with hopes that the October 18 mediation session will help resolve any lingering issues.

Garcia was previously a top lightweight contender, his last bout at the weight coming in a seventh-round knockout of 2012 Olympic Gold medalist and former title challenger Luke Campbell. It also marked his final fight under the tutelage of trainer Eddy Reynoso, with whom he trained since late 2018. His three fights aligned with Goossen all came above the lightweight limit, including 2022 wins over Emmanuel Tagoe and Javier Fortuna.

Garcia has since joined the growing stable of 2022 Trainer of the Year Derrick James in the greater Dallas area. He has since revealed that he will be training in Las Vegas ahead of his planned return later this fall.

Duarte will move up in weight and class for the affair. The 27-year-old from Parral, Chihuahua rebounded from a February 2019 split decision defeat to Adrian Estrella with eleven straight wins, all inside the distance. A fight with Garcia would require a move up for Duarte, who has spent the bulk of his ten-year career at lightweight.

His style strongly suggests he's in it for the short term.
He can hit, he's flashy I'd imagine they'd match him carefully.

This is a good comeback fight. Of corse you take a step back from a brutal loss, but this guy is decent enough. Probably could be undefeated, prime age, decent size, active.. he isn’t a top dog by any means, but it’s a fine comeback fight.

Ryan Garcia-Oscar Duarte December 2 DAZN Show To Now Land At Toyota Center In Houston

Ryan Garcia will break new ground at an old Golden Boy Promotions preferred venue for his next fight.

A location was confirmed for Garcia’s upcoming junior welterweight clash versus Mexico’s Oscar Duarte. Their December 2 DAZN headliner will now land at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas, as confirmed by Garcia and Golden Boy co-founder and Hall of Fame promoter Oscar De La Hoya.

The development comes days after it was previously revealed by De La Hoya that Alamodome was targeted to house the event, though it was subsequently learned that a deal was never finalized. Golden Boy was previously looking at locations throughout Texas as well as the greater Phoenix (Arizona) area for the show.

Garcia (23-1, 19 KOs) has previously headlined shows in San Antonio and Dallas, the latter where he presently trains with Derrick James whose gym he joined earlier this year. This event will mark the first pro appearance in Houston for the 25-year-old Victorville, California native and first fight in general since his April 22 knockout loss to Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis (29-0, 27KOs) at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

Duarte (26-1-1, 21 KOs) has spent his entire career evenly divided between California and his native Mexico. He has fought 14 times in California, including three of his last four starts amidst his current eleven-fight win streak. The 27-year-old Parral, Chihuahua native will fight for the first time in Texas and moves up in weight for a dream opportunity.

Undercard bouts have yet to be revealed for the show.

Unbeaten lightweight Floyd ‘Kid Austin’ Schofield was teased to land on the card, though the news tip came at a time when it was believed the event would take place in San Antonio. Houston’s own Marlen Esparza would be a logical choice to defend her lineal/WBC/WBA/WBO flyweight championship on the card, though it remains unclear whether she will be forced into a mandatory rematch versus former titlist Gabriela ‘La Chuky’ Alaniz, whom she edged in their July 8 unification bout in San Antonio.

Golden Boy has previously done frequent business in Houston but not since a January 2019 DAZN show headlined by then-WBO junior middleweight titlist Jaime Munguia at this very location. The last boxing event to take place at Toyota Center was in June 2019, headlined by locally-based two-division and reigning WBC middleweight titlist Jermall Charlo (32-0, 22KOs), who has not fought since that night.

Duarte looks strong, his shoulders are biceps are huge, he looks a bit unnatural if you ask me.
He seems to have a tank and may not gas out, but he has no approach whatsoever, no jab, hook, feint ect, his build up is almost zero and he relies on short distance scraps to maintain his dominance.

Press Release | Ohara Davies vs. Ismael Barroso Added

In an action packed co-main event, the U.K.’s Ohara “Two Tanks” Davies (25-2, 18 KOs) of London will make his debut in the U.S. under the Golden Boy Promotions' banner against El Tigre, Venezuela’s Ismael Barroso (24-4-2, 22 KOs).

Scheduled as chief-support for Ryan Garcia vs. Oscar Duarte taking place at Toyota Center in Houston, Texas, the two pugilists will battle it out in a 12-round fight for the WBA Super Lightweight Interim World Championship. The fight is presented in association with TGB Promotions and will be broadcast worldwide on DAZN as part of your subscription.

“Absolutely over the moon to get this fight confirmed, it’s gonna be a tough fight because Barroso should be the real WBA World Champion already as he was smoking Rolly Romero, but excited to get the fight we were meant to get three years ago in Dubai,” said Davies.

“On December 2 I’m coming to knock Ismael Barroso out and become Interim World Champion. Massive thank you to the Golden Boy team, Oscar, Eric and my manager Lee Eaton for all their hard work. It’s time to rock and roll!”

Since becoming a professional in 2014, Ohara Davies has steadily risen through the ranks of the division. Currently ranked as the No. 1 super lightweight by the WBA, he earned his golden ticket to a world title fight with a spectacular ninth-round stoppage against the former British lightweight champion Lewis Ritson in a WBA eliminator fight this past March. Since then, he has eagerly been waiting for his shot for a world championship. Davies has been on a five-year winning streak, his only blemishes being against world-class opponents, including former undisputed Champion Josh Taylor in 2017 and a close unanimous decision loss against Jack Catterall in 2018.

"I'm very excited to have another opportunity to show that I'm at the world championship level,” said Barroso. “I proved it in my last fight, and this time I'm going to make sure there's no doubt whatsoever. My team has stuck by me through everything and it has motivated me to get back into the ring and make all our hard work pay off. When fight night comes, I'll be ready to have my hand raised and leave the ring with the title."

With a career spanning nearly 20-years, savvy southpaw Ismael Barroso held the WBA interim lightweight title from 2015 to 2016. Barroso was last seen in the ring against Rolando “Rolly” Romero for the WBA Super Lightweight Title, which resulted in a controversial, early stoppage in Romero’s favor. He will be fighting for a title that many fans and media critics alike believe should belong to him. Barroso is currently ranked No.3 by the WBA.

"Ohara Davies is a monster in the ring who is deserving of a World Championship opportunity,” said Chairman and CEO of Golden Boy Promotions Oscar De La Hoya. “This is his first fight in the United States with Golden Boy directing his career path, and I am very confident that he will accomplish his mission to end the fight with the Championship Belt around his waist and his hand raised in victory."

“Ismael Barroso proved in his last fight that he belongs with all of the top 140 pounders in the world,” said Tom Brown, President of TGB Promotions. “He put on a great performance on short notice last time out and I’m sure that he’ll be highly motivated to finish the fight this time.”

Undercard Press Release

Golden Boy has set down the undercard for the return of “King” Ryan Garcia (23-1, 19 KOs), who will face the dangerous knockout artist Oscar “La Migraña” Duarte (26-1-1, 21 KOs) in a super lightweight fight.

The fight night, presented in association with Cancun Boxing, will take place at Toyota Center on Saturday, December 2 in Houston, Texas and will be broadcast worldwide on DAZN as part of your subscription.

The co-main event features London’s Ohara “Two Tanks” Davies (25-2, 18 KOs) who will make his highly anticipated U.S. debut as a Golden Boy fighter against El Tigre, Venezuela’s Ismael Barroso (24-4-2, 22 KOs). The 12-round fight is for the WBA Super Lightweight Interim World Championship and is presented in association with TGB Promotions.

On the DAZN card, WBA Lightweight International Champion and rising star Floyd “Kid Austin'' Schofield (15-0, 11 KOs) of Austin, Texas, will defend his title against Tijuana, Mexico’s Ricardo “Explosivo” Torres (17-7-3, 12 KOs) in a 10-round fight presented in association with Davies Entertainment.

Also making his return is NABO Middleweight Champion Shane Mosley Jr. (20-4, 11 KOs) who will measure up against San Bernardino’s Joshua Conley (17-5-1, 11 KOs) in a 10-round fight. Mosley Jr. is coming in hot after an explosive fifth round knockout against D'Mitrius Ballard on the Munguia vs. Derevyanchenko card in June.

Opening the DAZN card, knockout prospect Darius Fulghum (8-0, 8 KOs) will perform in front of his hometown Houston crowd in an eight-round light heavyweight fight against Pachino “Chino” Hill (8-4-1, 6 KOs) of Davenport, Iowa. This fight will mark Fulghum’s sixth time this 2023 calendar year fighting.

Golden Boy Fight Night: Garcia vs. Duarte Prelims streamed on Golden Boy’s YouTube Channel will kick off the fight night. In a four-round super bantamweight fight, Waianae, Hawaii’s Asa “Ace” Stevens (5-0, 2 KOs) will go toe-to-toe with Dominque Griffin (5-5-2, 2 KOs) of Irving, Texas. Former Mexican Olympian and bantamweight prospect Gael “El Terror” Cabrera (2-0, 1 KO) of Sonora, Mexico, will make his return in a four-round fight against Las Vegas, Nevada’s Alejandro Dominguez (2-0, 1 KO). Opening fight night for his brother and stablemate, the undefeated Sean Garcia (5-0, 2 KOs) of Victorville, California will participate in a four-round fight against a soon to be announced opponent.

Press Release | Arnold Barboza Inks Promotional With Golden Boy

Golden Boy Promotions announced today the signing of the undefeated and current WBO Intercontinental super lightweight champion Arnold Barboza Jr. (28-0, 10 KOs).

“The mold of a Golden Boy fighter is talent and hunger to become a world champion, which are all the qualities that Arnold Barboza Jr. possesses,” said Chairman and CEO of Golden Boy Promotions Oscar De La Hoya. “We will position him to fight for a World Title Belt in the very near future. We’re the best in the business at building the next generation of stars and Arnold Barboza Jr. will put the 140 pound division on notice.”

Barboza Jr. will participate on the DAZN broadcast of the Ryan Garcia vs. Oscar Duarte card in Houston, Texas at Toyota Center on Saturday, December 2.

"I'm ready for the big fights,” said Arnold Barboza Jr. “I'm ready for the big events, I'm ready to fight in LA where I was born and raised. I feel that Golden Boy and Oscar will deliver this for me and they stepped up and gave me what I asked for."

A Los Angeles native, 31-year-old Barboza Jr. made his professional debut as a welterweight on June 14, 2013, scoring a six-round unanimous decision victory against Gustavo Lopez. Since then, he has quickly dispatched a number of tough rivals and has climbed the ladder to become ranked No. 1 by the WBO, No. 4 by the WBC.

"Value is not determined by those who set the price, value is determined by those who choose to pay it,” said Rick Mirigian, Manager to Barboza Jr. “Golden Boy has placed a high value on Barboza and wasted no time to show it."

In his decade-long career, Barboza held various regional titles including the WBO International super lightweight title (2020-2021) and the NABF super lightweight title (2018-2019). His most notable wins include an unanimous decision victory against former world champion Jose Pedraza, a unanimous decision victory against Danielito Zorrilla, a dramatic unanimous decision win against world title contender Alex Saucedo, and a fight that went the distance against Antonio Moran.

he probably needs another confidence booster after the Tank episode. he's still dangerous though, but at his height I would have thought he'd move up
