Joshua-Wallin has a rematch clause

Eddie Hearn says the Anthony Joshua vs. Otto Wallin fight contract contains a rematch clause.

Which raises the obvious question....why?

Wallin's not at that level where we need to see a whole series of Joshua - Wallin match-ups, especially with Wallin losing the first fight. Like, imagine, "Oh, I wonder if Wallin losing was just a fluke."

As everybody has missed the main point entirely, I better spell it out for you.

With Fury and Usyk contracted to meet twice, the IBF are set to strip the winner of their first fight of the IBF belt for not immediately defending it against mandatory challenger, Hrgovic.

As things stand, when that IBF title becomes vacant, Hrgovic would fight Wallin for the belt.

Wallin-Joshua has therefore effectively become the eliminator to see who fights Hrgovic for the IBF title BUT...

Joshua only needs to win the first of his fights with Wallin to become Hrgovic's opponent for the IBF title.

Wallin must either draw the first fight and then win the second or beat Joshua twice to become Hrgovic's opponent for the IBF title.

That is the biggest inequity here and everybody missed it.

Rematch clauses are often annoying but they are pretty standard for big a-side fighters and Wallin agreed to it. I'd guess he'd make far more money rematching AJ than facing Hrgovic anyway. As it stands, Usyk is the IBF champ and this isnt an official eliminator to fight Hrgovic for a title.

Well I didn't learn they have a rematch clause, since I already knew that. I also already know the standard reasons for a rematch clause, and I'm aware of the situation with the IBF - and Usyk is still champ so none of the talk of this being an eliminator to fight Hrg for the belt is anything official.

If wallin beats AJ then the best fight for wallin is the rematch anyway. I guess he might want hrg for a vacant belt, but I think he would rather big AJ bucks.

All rematch clauses do in these situations is negotiate the terms of the potential 2nd fight befor the first fight…

That being said I hate rematch clauses and want them banned by sanctioning body’s when they are sanctioning world titles or minor titles or rankings ect… but this isn’t really a bad one in the scheme that f things.

Absolutely. Even with a belt Hrg is small fish compared to AJ. Wallin would make far more in a rematch.

If Wallin beats AJ the best fight for Wallin might be the rematch but with the rematch clause in place he is locked in and can't consider any other possibilities - like fights that could lead to a world title belt.

If Wallin beats Joshua, Joshua will not just want a rematch. He will need one and Wallin would probably be in a better negotiating position if there wasn't a rematch clause in place from the first fight.

Unnecessary rematch clauses are not good for boxing IMO.

I don't like, but have come to accept rematch clauses.
If a champion is having an off night for any reason - they should have the chance to avenge the loss.
For anything less than a legit world championship fight, they can shove it.
A rematch clause on this fight is ridiculous.
