Whoever has added that Stander was "down three times in the 2nd rd" on the Ron Stander fight appears to be wrong. Our very own Jaclem, who was ringside for the fight, says Stander was only down ONCE.
"Meriitt stood his ground and took charge right away and really battered him. Good combination of punches too...worked off the jab, left hooks and terrific sweeping rights. I don't know if it was in this round or the next, but the ring was slightly wet and Merritt walloped Stander and he went down. It was a legit knockdown, but the slippery ring did help. Stander was furious when the referee started the standing eight, as he had bragged that he had never been knocked down and argued the count. From then on it was all Merritt ,and it illustrated again that watching on TV is just like looking at shadows compared to being this close, especially to a brutal fight. Merritt had the full arsenal of punches and was hitting him with everything and the ref stopped it in the third, as well he should have. I don't recall if it was on cuts or just on a general beating , and Stander of course wanted to go on. It was a fast fight, especially for heavies, which is why it kind of runs together now. When it was over I was sure that Merritt was going to make a real dent in the heavy ratings, but it wasn't to be"
Also, who has unearthed this 1983 kayo of Memphis Al Jones? Is that really legit? Seems dubious to me. Of course Merritt coulda been in prison all those years 76-83 but still....?

Stander was indeed knocked down three times in the second -- he was still on his knees when the bell sounded to end the second round. Referee Lew Eskin then shouted "you have got to get up on your own."
Eskin stepped in at the 41-second mark of the third as Stander reeled across the ring after another barrage. BOTH the AP and UPI reported this in papers across the country.
Nor was Merrit in jail from 1976 to 1982, although he was in trouble with the law. In October 1974 he was arrested in Kansas City where he had gone to visit his mother. He was found in a car that was identified as being involved in a robbery of a couple (TV & $13). He claims his lawyer convinced him to plead guilty even though he had just accepted a ride i the car. Merrit was returned to MO state prison for a time. That explains the gap after the Clark fight in March 1974.
After getting out he lost to Ward. In October 1977 he was arrested for attempted murder following a shooting outside a Cleveland bar. In June 1978, he was tried and acquitted of those charges.
Now for a few questions --
I have a 1964 fight/win for Merritt prior to his incaceration through Dec 1967 -- anyone have the clip for that?
I have a clip from the day prior that says Merritt was supposed to fight"Sylvester Dulaire of England" -- Sylvester, not from England, was a different fighter than George. Any clarificaton on this?
Finally in the lead-up to the Memphis Jones fight was there any articles about Merritt?
Merritt was last seen some years ago in Vegas, cracked out, begging and accosting fight fans for money.
Anone know what happened to him?
Merritt trivia -- he was owned at one point by a sydicate that included Joe Louis, Bob Arum, and Henny Youngman!

!
I kneel to thee, thine Master of Jeff Merritt related trivia. Impressive.
I am trying to obtain up to date info/pics of Jeff Merritt from his care worker. Guy is not a boxing fan but has verified that is def the one & only Candly Slim. JM is no longer homeless but had some kind of health problem/stroke maybe a few years ago, and is now in rehabilitation as one of his legs not so sturdy... Says he is a nice guy and is trying to piece together a scrap book of his boxing days.
The saga continues...
Lowell, MA's Sun of January 1966 has "army Heavyweight Sylvester Dulaire from Hartford, CT" taking part in the Golden Gloves, so it must've been an amateur bout.delisa wrote: Now for a few questions --

n!
I was a little unclear -- the Dulaire bout was in 1971 and the day of report says "sylvestor" while the result has always read George -- I just never saw a clip from the result.
Re Candy SLim alive and in care somewhere -- I ahve loads of clippings -- maybe you can get in tocuh with me at [email protected]
