Ricky Hatton, Michael Moorer, Diego Corrales, Ivan Calderon and Luis Angel Firpo were elected into the 2024 IBHOF

Post by scorpio83 »

Everyone should know by now, the International Boxing Hall of Fame in the class of 2024 would be headline by former WBO Light Heavyweight and former two-time World Heavyweight Champion "Double M" Michael Moorer, former Junior Welterweight and Welterweight Champion Ricky "The Hitman" Hatton, former super featherweight and lightweight champion "Chico" Diego Corales and former WBO Minimumweight and WBO Light Flyweight Champion Ivan Calderon. Also, they also elected Argentine heavyweight contender Luis Angel Firpo for the old timer category, who knocked out former World Heavyweight Champion Jess Willard and nearly won the world heavyweight title by knocking Jack Dempsey out of the ring before he was kayo by the champion. Firpo fought in a no-decision contest against the fearsome Harry Wills, whom one writer from the Ring Magazine website thought Firpo beat Wills, but others mostly felt Wills beat Firpo after knocking him down along the way. Tell me what are your thoughts for this announcement?

Firpo doesn't belong.

I think I remember seeing the ballot this time, and it wasn't a particularly deep year for the IBHOF, but I'd think there were names with better achievements. Maybe not though.

Exactly. He wasn't even one of the better contenders of the era really. He's a really weak choice for the Hall of Fame. One of the least deserving names I've seen get in honestly.

Calderon was overdue for induction-Firpo is a joke; I'd vote yes for MM, Corrales and Hatton-but Hatton is a close call, imo.

There wasn't an obvious choice appearing on the ballot for the first time this year.
When there isn't one of those type candidates the borderline candidates get a few extra votes and sometimes it gets them in.

Moorer and Hatton were long overdue imo.
Glad to see them finally get over the line.

With this ballot the number Hall of Fame fighters defeated by Floyd Mayweather is up to 7 with two more being obvious choices when they get to the ballot.

Personally, I don't think Calderon, Firpo and Moorer belong.

I remembered my comment from my old username on this forum that Diego Corrales should get inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame someday after his death, but some fans said he didn't deserve it because of his outside the ring issue as a person, which was irrelevant because I only respect Corrales for his career in the ring not the person. I'm glad he got the posthumous induction for his career in the ring not the personal life hall of fame, which the fans should understand.

For Firpo, he was inducted under the early era old-time category the same category as Jack Dempsey and his opponents like Firpo like Jess Willard, Billy Miske, Georges Carpentier, Tommy Gibbons, Gene Tunney and Jack Sharkey.

Wow. This is like a bad April Fools joke. There are certainly guys that were better than guys that they could have put it in.

Marlon Starling should have been inducted before Ricky "The Holdman" Hatton.

^^^^list of fighters on this ballot.

Tough choices for the writers this year imo.
Zero slam dunk candidates for induction and zero candidates who shouldn't be on the ballot begin with.
There are some who would never get my vote but that doesn't mean they don't deserve to be on the ballot(Ottke, Paz)
Whole list is borderline type candidates imo.

I think Graciela Casillas should have been elected but maybe next time for her.

Elmer, Donald Curry was already inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2019 which was long overdue, so you should edit him out from your list.

The 'pickens are slim these days. Who is going next year? This well is nearly dry.

Manny Pacquiao would be eligible for the 2025 International Boxing Hall of Fame which would be the obvious first ballot while other great fighters and former champions would get in eventually because of the candidates have a weaker resume outside of Pacquiao.

It's just a fun thing. Not to be taken too seriously by fans. And a great honour for those who get in.

I strongly agreed and I'm happy that the new inductees are getting the honor they rightfully deserves even though there are others who deserve as much as next year inductees.

Dead pleased for Ricky.......not too shabby for a lad who knew the inside of a lot of boozers and kebab shops.

I am really hoping Ricky gets a 'nugget' to work with as a trainer, he must know heaps and I am sure he could do some great things with a decent prospect and get himself back to Vegas.

There is the rub. They didn't deserve it as much as other guys who should be getting in.

Eddie Mustapha Muhammad should have been in decades ago. Not sure if he is even on the ballot. Rodrigo Valdes should be in.
Need someone from way back, how about Mike McTigue?
If we have to put in more heavyweights, how about Elmer Ray?

Modern Section? Marlon Starling and Rocky Lockridge were much better than these last few guys.

You have to wonder about the process. There is no way in the world that a majority of voters independently voted for Luis Firpo. How could he possibly even enter the minds of people?
There must be "horse trading" going on or something.

Was Firpo in the old Ring Magazine Hall of Fame?
That HOF closed a few years before the IBHOF opened.

The current HOF is on its way to enshrining all of the boxers its predecessor honored.

I get hatton, he was massively famous.

Corrales... shouldnt castillo be in instead?
Calderon was a long time champ. I guess
Moorer held the wbo when it didnt count, eeked a big win against holyfield then was knocked out by a 45 year old and did nothing after
