I imagine that it was thought Johnson would come in at his normal weight and turned up heavy.
Obviously his team was looking for a win and Sharp had taken Shakir Potters the distance a few fights ago.
I'd also guess that Sharp wasn't compensated particularly well so when he saw the size of the job, he decided to take the full count on one knee
Went this distance with James Metcalf, Scott Fitzgerald and Hosea Burton too

it was always billed as CW, and Callum has been clear he's a CW now. I think the plan was for Sharp to exit early and get Callum a W.

Normally if you were fighting an ex world title challenger who is a puncher and a weight above you would be on proper money.
This was a small hall show which wouldn't generate the money like a TV show so he definitely wasn't getting paid the going rate.

I would defend giving a non punching, quality fighter a run out against some of the same size or bigger.
No problem in matching Sharp against a Pitters of this world.
After a long time out Johnson needed a run out......

I know you're a retired pro, but surely you can't agree with a former contender fighting a guy who's 8-120-1.

What I don't agree with is him being matched against a puncher a couple of stone heavier! Especially as he prob wasn't getting paid accordingly.

I don't have a problem of matching him against a contender like Pitturs

Its a run out mate. Job done for Callum & Darryl no one expected anything different. Sharp will of got a decent purse relative to small halls and Callum probably got FA or next to that. Problem u have is that board is more likely to agree a bbbc licensed fighter than a foreigner. And locking sharp into place gave them less probability for something going wrong and the bout falling through. For what there intentions were, (get callum bk in ring) it was job done. For sharps intentions, earn a few quid and try not get highlight reeled it was job done.
It is what it is. I understand it and think it's acceptable.

I find it strange that anyone can deem it acceptable - particularly the board.

I get your points but professional boxing is meant to be a sport. Having a former world title challenger fight someone naturally a fair bit smaller than them who’s had 120 losses and won’t be trying to win is stupid and really hard to defend and say it was a sporting contest.

If Callum needs a run out then fine. Get someone of a similar size who’ll be trying win though.

I know boxing in the U.K. has historically had journeymen for prospects but we’re in an era now where boxing in the U.K. is struggling for attention. People have so much choice now for things to do and watch and boxing needs to move with the times.

Obviously I get what you mean, but Johnson has been out for a couple of years, moved up in weight, who would you have matched him against for his comeback fight? The Pole who Billiam Smith beat?
I've got no problem with an ex contender getting a run out on the undercard. However don't like overmatched fighters getting beat up, Sharp seemed to take the sensible option and took the count early on one knee, something he has never done in over 100 fights.
In the bigger picture having one set of fighters in the winning corner has always been the same in boxing, but with the advent of the internet it has become more obvious.

I would have him fight someone better than a guy who has won 6% of his fights. As an example, Jarrell Miller's first fight in 3/5 years was against a guy who was 11-7. When Oscar Rivas came back after a.5 years he fought a guy with an 8-5. There is zero excuse for the nonsense that took place last week.

Home and away fighters, I get. It's the promoter's map of the world, it's their money and their investment in the boxer. However, the 3-72, 11-110 and 8-120-5 are mostly a British thing. I bet there ain't another light heavyweight with that many losses anywhere else in the world. There's a heavyweight who's 6-52-1, guess where he's from? I doubt you'll find another country where they regularly have active fighters who have more than a hundred losses.

Terrell Jamal Woods is an example of a very capable American fighter, who's lost a fair bit, but he wins 50% of his fights.

More specifically than sport, the term prizefighting is more accurate. I don't need to explain to anyone on this board as they are mostly knowledgeable chaps
But I don't think that anyone expected anything different than the eventual outcome of CJs fight.
Boxing evolves and it just doesn't work in the way it used to, even 20 yrs ago let alone longer than that.
Objective for the fight was...give CJ some rds to get his eye in against an opponent that was unlikely to cause any disruption and objective for Darryl was get paid. Johnson & his corner should of known not to throw any meaningful shots till the last rd so as to get all the time they could.
I hear your points but still stand by my opi ion that ut was acceptable. Now he's had it, I wouldn't accept another fight of the same calibre.
Also as a final question, as has already been asked of you, who would you of matched him against.?

The losing record is a bit of a misnoma too in that Sharp is better than a reasonable amount of fighters with winning records.
I'd be confident in Sharp taking domestic level fighters in his own weight class the distance.
Johnson hasn't won a Euro title.
Bad matching for me in that Johnson needed rounds

Tbf CJ could of span it out till the 4th.
Quite obvious Sharp isn't going to take too much stick and who can blame him.
But your right about Sharp taking a load of prospects on. Only thing is, he's a middlewght and like most road warriors he goes up to take fights.
I dont knock that fight either.
The matching wasn't great, but probably secure. And it got the job done. They could of Probably could of done a better job with the matching.

Someone getting time in the ring, is only meaningful to me, if there’s an element of risk there.

Re: opponents I’d have preferred that he’d still be heavily favoured in…

David Jamieson
Anness Taj
Ricky Reeves
Vasil Ducar

I’m just past watching fights where one of the fighters isn’t even trying to get a result. Are there any other 2 person sports where one person doesn’t even attempt to get a positive result?

Don't think it was meant to be a meaningful fight, other than get callum back in ring at his new weight and see how he feels after been out so long.
Can't see jamieson taking that unless he got paid far more than sharp and probably the money just wasn't there. Probably same with Taj.
Reeves is out with injury afaik and Ducar is a foreign fighter. They're going to cost more and there's a chance it can all go tits up and CJ ends up with no opponent.
All things considered I agree it wasn't the best opponent but take everything into consideration and it's acceptable imo. Wouldn't be acceptable again tho.

Also it's slightly misleading ( unintentionally) to just describe it as a sport. It fits the definition for sure but sport is a general concept with 2 or more engaging in physical activity for the purpose of competition. Prizefighting is a more definitive description and its not necessarily reasonably competitive. Lads like sharp are part of the learning process for the ones who have the £ or belief behind them to go on for championship fighting.
It's just part of the evolving process.
Same as horse racing over the sticks. Most jump horses and races are there just to pace the top horses to get ready for cheltnem gold Cup.
