a match on the jake paul undercard is being investigated. from what i gather, it seems like the winning fighters corner bet on the over, which was 5.5 rounds. their fighter won by 10th round stoppage. they were a clear favourite entering the bout (11/1) and expected to win handily. they dropped the opponent in the third, then eased off and eventually got a late stoppage.
now this obviously isnt the same as a fighter full on flopping a loss for a return, but it does add the element of a fighter potentially changing how they box as a result of gambling. it also kinda f@cks with other betters who were expecting a fight contested on honest terms.
what are your thoughts - should this be allowed?

what bets do you think it's okay for a fighter/their corner to have on their bout? (e.g. outright win)
when is it not okay?

Betting rules on sports are so varied. Football players cant bet on any football yet horse racing owners can back or lay their own horses? I dunno about fighters teams backing against them to me that would be a bit too suss...margaret thatcher wrote: ↑21 Dec 2023, 22:47 id add further

Only bet that should be allowed in combat sports is for yourself (or teammate) to win. Anything else changes how someone would fight and is match fixing.

You shouldent even be able to bet on yourself/teammate/fighter…
Too risky having people throw a fight or 2, inflate their odds, then bet on themselves and actualy try.
If you are a boxer, it or work in boxing close enough to have non public information, you shouldent be able to bet.

I'm pretty sure in the UK the Board banned anyone involved in a fight in any capacity from betting on it. If I recall correctly this came about after David Haye v Audley Harrison.

I wish they'd banned any betting on the Audley fight, I put £100 on him to win
