Jimmy Young vs. Joe Hipp

Post by scorpio83 »

15 Rounds Heavyweight Bout

Either Young outbox the southpaw Hipp behind his quick jabs and counterpunches to take a decision or stopping him late after Hipp was worn down after taking Young's counterpunches. What do you guys think and who do you got?

If we're talking about a prime, physically fit Young, then he'd beat Hipp easily. But I'm certain it would go the distance because Jimmy had no power and Hipp was pretty durable.

The peak Young was just too quick, nimble, tricky, and elusive for a plodder like Hipp.

The only complicating factor in this fight - the issue making it hard to analyze - is Hipp's southpaw stance. That's because we can't say with 100% confidence how Young would perform against a southpaw.

I don't think Jimmy fought any southpaws during his prime years. In 1974, before he became a world-rated contender, Jimmy did KO southpaw Richard Dunn in eight rounds. But that doesn't tell us much because Dunn lacked durability.

Still, I'm very confident Young would have handled Hipp without much difficulty. That's because Jimmy was a level or two above Hipp in ability.
