Contracts are contracts should be fairly simple to figure out in court… Mabey
But how the fornicate has matchroom claimed 7.7 million in lost profits on buatsi…
Don’t promoters make like 15%? So what buatsi would have had 50 million in purses? What’s buatsi booked for a canelo trilogy in saudi? Cause that’s the only way I see that number…

So he they put a clause in his contract saying that at the end of the current contract he would have to stay with them if they matched any higher offers? Could they do that? I've no idea but I know we have a couple of legal egals on here.

Based off of Buatsi's activity as well how the hell is he gonna make 77 million in the 1 fight he has every 5 years?

bonkers figures, Buatsi a good boxer but if he has that commercial pull, I'm Jesus. Shalom's inexperience is shining through here. Hearn is many things, but he's never far wrong re contractual compliance. No wonder Ben is hiding. I don't think the Saudi's will touch him for this and other reasons.

Promoters don’t make a % unless the fighter fights on someone else’s show like through a purse bid.gregregegg wrote: ↑19 Jan 2024, 16:36 Contracts are contracts should be fairly simple to figure out in court… Mabey

Buatsi would have been on a fixed amount per fight and it would have been up to Eddie to make sure he makes enough on a show to cover that plus all the other expenses.
Promoters take a risk on putting on show

Yes they can. It’s fairly common in fight sports, particularly in MMA. Recently happened with Top Rank I think who had matching rights in their deal with Jose Ramirez. They chose not to match Golden Boy’s offer though.Nightmare Roy wrote: ↑19 Jan 2024, 17:06 So he they put a clause in his contract saying that at the end of the current contract he would have to stay with them if they matched any higher offers? Perhaps it may have happened but I’ve never known matching rights to just be ignored as they were in the Buatsi deal with Buatsi/Shalom commenting that Eddie couldn’t match the reach of Sky Sports which is a material part of the contract.
I’ve only ever understood matching rights to be based on money and length of contract/amount of fights. Will be interesting to see what happens.
I think Eddie probably has a case against Buatsi but I’m not sure how that would extend to Boxxer/Sky as they could just say Buatsi gave assurances that he was free to sign with them.
Matchroom had matching rights for Dalton Smith and I think they used it to get him to re-sign.
The £7m will be assuming Buatsi wins every fight of the contract and probably beat Bivol. They’re not going to get it but will look for a financial settlement and will use it to put off anyone else looking to go against matching rights.
Re: Matchroom Boxing suing BOXXER & Sky Sports for £7.7 MILLION
Was quite funny as Boxxer rushed the signing announcement as DAZN were launching on Sky and therefore that argument was a no go.maverick23 wrote: ↑20 Jan 2024, 04:42Yes they can. Buatsi and Boxxer are in a sticky spot yet again

Who's the clown advising Buatsi?

Yep. Unfortunately all it may take is someone who appears to know what they’re talking about to tell Buatsi/Boxxer what they want to hear: ‘That contract can’t be enforced. We’ll get out of it no problem’ and that’s enough. Not much of a surprise that it was the same time trusted advisor, agent to the stars and ex-con Maz Majeed came into the scene.trafford wrote: ↑20 Jan 2024, 04:58Was quite funny as Boxxer rushed the signing announcement as DAZN were launching on Sky and therefore that argument was a no go.maverick23 wrote: ↑20 Jan 2024, 04:42Yes they can. This is the clause re: matching rights in a UFC contract. I’d imagine boxing contracts are similar.
"12.1 During the one (1) year period after conclusion of the Term for any reason whatsoever (the "Matching Period"), ZUFFA shall have the option to match the financial terms and conditions of any offer made to Fighter for an Other Bout as defined in Section 3.6 of this Agreement.
Fighter shall not accept any offer or enter into a contract or agreement with any other promotional entity during the Matching Period without complying with this Section 12.1.
Prior to acceptance of any Offer made during the matching period, Fighter shall first deliver to ZUFFA a written notice of all material financial terms and conditions of the offer, including, but not limited to, the identity of the promotional entity making the offer.
Such notice shall constitute an exclusive, irrevocable offer (the "Fighter Offer" to contract with ZUFFA on the same financial terms and conditions)."

Re: Matchroom Boxing suing BOXXER & Sky Sports for £7.7 MILLION
The claim for £7.7 million has nothing to do with a share of any purse.
It is based on the profit Matchroom ‘could’ have made on Buatsi events over the course of a new contract.
Obviously, their assumptions are based on best case scenarios, but they aren’t going to low ball it are they?
If he managed to land 2 or 3 big fights, maybe even a PPV, you could get into the millions from ticket sales and TV money.
On the contract issue, you can put in any clause you want. Why wouldn’t you be able to? I don’t even know if the board has a standard contract any more, but there have always been side agreements.
Like all cases where the lines are blurred, if it goes to Court this will come down to who can afford the best lawyer.
Can Boxxer’s lawyer persuade a judge that Matchroom couldn’t offer the same terms/exposure? That is partly subjective. If he’s very expensive, he may well be able to do so.
Likely outcome is a settlement once both sides have traded a few blows and seen how the land lies.

I thought promoters didn’t take a percentage of the fighter’s purse, I thought they paid the fighters, and made money off the ticket sales and event?

Exactly. They will take a share, however, if they box on another promoters show.JamesPhilips wrote: ↑20 Jan 2024, 10:58I thought promoters didn’t take a percentage of the fighter’s purse, I thought they paid the fighters, and made money off the ticket sales and event?

didn't know that, so in theory you could just keep sourcing other cards for your fighter to fight on, with no outlay from yourself.JamesPhilips wrote: ↑20 Jan 2024, 11:05Oh ok thanks for that clarificationFrostieballs wrote: ↑20 Jan 2024, 11:04JamesPhilips wrote: ↑20 Jan 2024, 10:58

A promoter doesn't earn a brass farthing if his fighter fights on another show.
The manager will earn his 25% either way.
The promoter only earns off his show, tickets, show sponsorship and TV money.
They way promoters genuinely work together is co promoting.
Barry Mcguigan only let Frampton fight Quigg if it was co promoted
So despite cyclone not actually promoting anything, Barry was cut in on the cash.

Don't they sometimes aim high on these cases as a shock strike, then negotiate a sum often lower?

That is not true. In virtually every contract I have seen there is a clause that the promoter can take a cut if the boxer appears on another promoters show.1443010 wrote: ↑20 Jan 2024, 15:03 A promoter doesn't earn a brass farthing if his fighter fights on another show.

It covers them in the event of purse bids etc.

that seems more plausible.
I do chuckle when people announce something as definitely true (promoter gets nowt!) without really knowing.

However I’ve seen interviews from years back where allegedly was talking about Eddie Hearn being quite happy to let Kell Brook fight Porter on the away card because he (Hearn) gets his percentage even if Brook loses.
So I’m basing it off allegedly knowing what he’s talking about.
