Boxing News & Boxxer
Boxing News & Boxxer
Need to preface this by saying that I've been a long time BN supporter - have bought the magazine for years and anyone looking at my previous posts would see that i've lauded Matt Christie and the team for the outstanding work they've produced during their tenure.
That being said, WTF is going on right now with the veil of silence around Boxxer's dealings with Mazhar Majeed?!
I bought last week's issue and listened to the BN podcast, yet a story big enough to feature as an exclusive in The Sunday Times doesn't even get mentioned once. The Sunday Times then follows up the original story with another major one, and yet as i flick through this week's BN, there's enough room to devote a double-page spread to an unknown German boxer, but somehow all this 'heat' surrounding Ben Shalom doesn't even warrant a single mention... really??!!
It's not a good look at all and something just doesn't feel right here at all...

My late father said the only publication that wasn't filled with lies was Boxing News. I agree, they should be all over this story.Deserter wrote: ↑27 Jan 2024, 11:23 Need to preface this by saying that I've been a long time BN supporter - have bought the magazine for years and anyone looking at my previous posts would see that i've lauded Matt Christie and the team for the outstanding work they've produced during their tenure.

Nothing in boxing gets the scrutiny it deserves, let's be honest. The most corrupt mainstream sport in the world.
Re: Boxing News & Boxxer
In general terms you're right mate, which is why ironically BN has always stood out for me as a trusted source. I'm now seriously questioning that trust...Boxerbeetle wrote: ↑27 Jan 2024, 11:43 Nothing in boxing gets the scrutiny it deserves, let's be honest. The most corrupt mainstream sport in the world.
I know a lot of people on here don't like Ben Shalom but in all honesty I haven't got strong feelings either way, other than suspecting he's a bit out of his depth. I just think that for BN to just pretend this hasn't happened inevitably looks very suspicious and leads me to question why.

Boxing and the people in it are some of the most accessible, so long as you toe the line, you can't be critical, or you'll get frozen out.

I do worry what the magazine being owned by a YouTube journo will do it to long term. I've read it since late 90s when it was like a proper paper size. Do you think Tebbutt interferes? He has zero boxing or journalism background, he's a failed actor.

Re: Boxing News & Boxxer
I got BN weekly since 1990 (when it wasn't late as it often was back then). As it began to turn from a paper into a magazine it lost its way.
From being something you'd read from cover to cover with the occasional b&w picture, it became something filled with pictures with less & less to read .. last straw for me was probably in the 2010's when I could read it all cover to cover in a 30 minute break in work.

Re: Boxing News & Boxxer
Bit awkward for BN at least as Ben was recently being praised by them for getting behind Ringside Charitable Trust.
However, if he's giving 80k cash to dodgy people then that puts it in a whole new light.

100% this, Tebbutt is very pally with Shane Mcguigan isn't he, Shane has a fair numbers of his stars signed with Boxxer, wouldn't surprise me if that had some kind of influence on it.SeanBrennan wrote: ↑27 Jan 2024, 14:12 I do worry what the magazine being owned by a YouTube journo will do it to long term. Re: Boxing News & Boxxer
Can't see editor Matt Christie having any of that. He's fiercely protective of the BN brand, as he often talks about on his podcast. I get the feeling he'd walk if there was any attempt at interference.
Maybe they're digging to see what's behind it. Just because the Times said its true it doesn't mean it is, and BN won't have the same legal power as the Times to defend anything libellous.
Saying someone else published it first is no defence.
I've been a reader for 30 years and a subscriber for most of them. It's the strongest it's ever been, and has absorbed the best of BM features when that folded too.
Is a promoter handing bags of cash over such a massive revelation anyway? Its Shaloms naivety that is startling, but in a sport plagued by drug cheats with the capacity to kill each other there are bigger things to worry about

Chrstie got into bed with Tebbut and was over the moon doing so. I don't believe it's been answered how tebbut was/is being bankrolled, but it should be.
Boxing news have had their fingers burnt recently over publshing false information, so maybe they are just being more careful this time.

Did Tebbutt actually buy the publication or just the YT channel? I thought BN was owned by Kelsey media?Twinkle Toes wrote: ↑28 Jan 2024, 10:24 Chrstie got into bed with Tebbut and was over the moon doing so. I don't believe it's been answered how tebbut was/is being bankrolled, but it should be.

I heard that Hatton got a carrier bag full of cash to sign pro
Def rumours about Jamie Moore recieving cash payments
Cash payments are nothing new in boxing

Re: Boxing News & Boxxer
Sky's exclusive promotional partner having links to a convicted fraudster feels newsworthy to me, certainly The Sunday Times thought so. And given this week's issue has devoted significant space to a boxing class in Newquay that reads like a feature in a local newspaper, it's hard to say it was pushed out because of other more newsworthy articles.veriton wrote: ↑28 Jan 2024, 09:18 Can't see editor Matt Christie having any of that. As for any libel issues, the ST has Shalom on the record saying he's dealt with Majeed, but even if you park that, it's still possible to mention the fact the story has run without risking legal action.
For this not to even warrant a single column inch in the 2 issues that have run since the original story came out just doesn't stack up.

Not to my knowledge, nor has it been discussed on the Matt Christie podcast. I've never been a fan of Tebbutt, I know he gets some love amongst some hardcores, but I side with Terry Chapendama's opinion of him.SeanBrennan wrote: ↑28 Jan 2024, 15:46interesting - they've not covered much on the Mcguigan saga have they? I know Spencer Fearon thinks ill of him. Didn't like how Tebbutt released texts etc like a child. And I know it's childish on my part, but he looks like a middle class sausage which makes me think worse of him being involved in the sport.The_Don1 wrote: ↑28 Jan 2024, 17:12Not to my knowledge, nor has it been discussed on the Matt Christie podcast.
