Yep don't think his old man was much different in that department either , two of a kind anyway , both got a chip on there shoulder and inflated opinion of themselves , The old man may be a british superstar , but i distinctly remember at the time there being better fighters around than him that he never / would'nt face , , Just not a big fan of either of them , seniour should just bog of back to Aust , and take his son with him ,
Which boxers did Benn say he wouldn't fight. He didn't come across as the type of boxer who would dodge some one.
He was well matched. Kept away from Toney, Nunn, McCallum, Herol Graham, Kalambay, Reggie Johnson. He also lost the first one against Malinga and got a gift decision

Jones v Benn probably would of happened if it weren't for Don King who would only allow it if Jones agreed to a multi fight deal.

Absolutely stacked MW and SMW era

Benn fought , beat and lost to some great fighters , but he did'nt go anywhere near the top dogs , Toney and Jones , , good fighter , well matched , and exciting to watch , but far far bigger name in the UK and Britain than he actualy was elswhere
Was the big big name fights ever a possibility? I don't ever remember during Benns career those fights were ever building up to a possibility.

I'm guessing if RJJ ever became an option Benn would have willingly taken the fight.

Totally agree that the above era was stacked with mega talent. But again there was never any mention of Benn facing Herol Graham as far as I remember.

It was more of a natural domestic fight than Watson that's for sure. Eubank admits he didn't want to fight Herol. Eubank used to be Graham's sparring partner and got schooled. Eubank and Graham talking on it:

Herol Graham great fighter but not in a good way these days, he was in a psychiatric ward a few years ago, thought to be a result of damage from boxing.

It’s certainly was an exciting night when Herol came back and upset Chris Johnson in a fight where he must have been a big underdog. Was that on the BBC? I’m pretty sure if he’d got Charles Brewer instead that night he’d have done the business. The Brewer fight just came too late.

I think how Roy Jones dealt with Malinga more or less tells you volumes as to why Eubank and Benn wanted no part of Toney and Jones. It was a stacked era, but even then nobody would really have picked them to beat those two top Americans.

Ah Bomber vs Brewer is possibly the saddest fight I have ever seen - I really struggle to watch the ending of that one again. All Herol needed to do was hold one, he had an unsailable lead on the cards - even if UK pundits had it a bit closer (with Bomber still in the lead) and he wasn't hurt badly - he was almost "stuck" on the ropes. Ref had to stop it, but it was a horrible stoppage in that he wasn't hurt bad enough to be stopped. Cannot fault the ref, but Bomber was so unlucky.

Bomber should have beaten Brewer then.

Holmes vs Tyson is another one I can struggle to re-watch. Holmes did so well to survive, looked to have his legs back under in and was going to see the round up then got his arms in a muddle between the ropes and was defenseless for a split second.

I'm not sure Eubank would have been knocked out, beat definitely. But he seemed to have a head made of steel.

deffo, possibly ref stop fight due to eye closure, he was susceptible to some bad eye injuries, the shape of his socket meant when it swelled it swelled really bad. Obviously I'm speculating.

While Herol had spent a good deal of his money, I remember talking to Glyn Rhodes when Graham was making his comeback.
The papers was saying he was skint, Glyn said that he missed the limelight, had a house paid for in a nice part of town and had invested in a taxi firm which became the biggest in the area, and received a healthy wage each month from that.

There was a gofundme appeal for Herol a few years ago, so I'm not convinced he's loaded.

I was told that when he was making his comeback, so we are talking over 20 years ago, can't say what happened since.
However having a wage from that investment in one way is better than having a big lump sum to blow.
And the house was paid for rather than having a mansion mortgaged up.

hope it did better than Bakole's. I remember reading he was working in a supermarket years ago, not that there is anything wrong with that but it doesn't imply wealth.

Benn V Graham was never a realistic proposition.

Graham was in his pomp when Benn was a novice and by the time Benn was in his pomp, circa 1990 onwards, Graham was in decline.

Conor Benn Updates On BBBofC Hearing

After many months of speculation, Conor Benn is expected to have a hearing with the British Boxing Board of Control about a renewal of his license and now he has provided an update.

Benn is still unable to box in the UK after failing two drug tests in 2022 ahead of his fight with Chris Eubank Jr. He has fought twice since then, both times in the US, beating Peter Dobson in Las Vegas earlier this month, though Dobson has since called for a rematch.

After that fight he took to X to call out a number of high-level fighters and one of them, Gervonta Davis, has reposed. Talks are now in advanced stages according to Eddie Hearn.

Since July last year, Benn has been cleared of any wrongdoing by the WBC and the National Anti-Doping Panel lifted his suspension, but that was appealed by UK Anti-Doping and the British Boxing Board of Control.

Speaking to Boxing Social he has now been asked about when the hearing might be.

Very soon man, a matter of weeks. You got to remember I won the first hearing, won against the WBC, they chose to appeal so I’m extremely confident on my position. It’s just so hard having this hanging over my head constantly.

“It’s the biggest burden. My whole career I’ve been able to focus on tending so having this hanging over your head and having nothing fights just to keep active is really hard. I want to fight the best and climb the rankings, I want to test myself.”

Whats he saying he was cleared for when they don't even have their story straight from what I'm seeing? Blaming it on eggs and then he comes on and says he never had it in his system and it was nothing to do with eggs. Is his position that it was eggs or that he never had anything in his system and it was a contaminated test?

Anyone with common sense knows what happened. My view - he was caught at the end of a cycle. Everyone knows what the drug is used for.

I don't think he blamed eggs, that's what the WBC came up with. He initially said it was nothing to do with eggs but then he got some 'scientists' to look into it and they concluded Benn failed because his body stored clomiphene up. He apparently visited Ibiza before being tested too so assume they are saying he was eating eggs whilst away which gets around it not being present in UK eggs.
