Just got Sugar Ray Robinson fights on VHS (full fights)

Post by David Mills »

Against:

Fullmer
Maxim
Tiger Jones
Turpin
Olsen

The quality is great, I can't wait to sit and watch them all. I've always heard how great Sugar Ray Robinson was, no I get to find out. I check boxrec and it looks like he lost most of these fights. I've got some more tapes on the way, I think those are the classic fights that he won.

That's cool, I have 11 fights of him, although many are not full fights(only show best rounds). The three olsen fights were nice to watch but in my opinion he's not really the level of Ray. I just love looking at that BEAUTIFUL left hook on Olsen he used.

David, have you noticed he's not into dodging punches that much? When he dodges he simultaneously punches or starts one of his patented flurries. And he doesn't really dodge them much, sometimes when he gets hit he just starts a flurry.

Yeah, apart from one of the Olsen fights, the quality is superb, especially against Basilio. In my opinion I, in a way, prefer the high-quality b&w than the modern shades of yellow and red.

By the way, these days I'm looking for tapes of other fighters(mostly more modern).

Where did you get yours?

I have the one against Maxim, too. He lost it because of heat exhaustion.

Maybe he would have lost it anyway, from welterweight to light-heavy.

SugarRoy, I just got them today and I justed watched the first 2 round of some fight, can't remember which fighter it was. So I haven't noticed that yet, but I will be looking out for it. Do you know if there are any copies of any of his fights with LaMotta?

Where did you get your videos from?

The LaMotta-v-Robinson video I have only has the first round and the last three. So yes it does exist, but you'll have a hard time finding it, as I can't find many tapes online at least.

So you've seen 2 rounds. Pretty brutal slugging power for "the sweetest", right?

I remeber seeing the film of Robinson/Turpin I in a movie theatre, very soon after the fight. It was the best boxing film I ever saw in a movie house...complete...all three minutes of all fifteen rounds....so rare it may have been unique, as I recall seing mostly highlights of others inthe days when fight films were shown in that venue,

As I recall,Robinson started to catch on that dip down style of Turpin's in the late rounds, but by then it was too late.

If this is the tape you have, you have a gem.

Yeah, that is the tape I have, I got them from some guy out of Chicago. He wanted like $1500 bucks for all his Sugar Ray stuff, so me and some other guys put together some money and got them.

They show Robinson-LaMotta VI on ESPN Classic occasionally. I have it taped, its missing a couple rounds.
