Kevin Mitchell tonight

Post by Old bones Ian »

Mitchell goes in against Andrey Isaev from Belarus, the one name on Isaev's record is Rocky Dean, who he stopped in the 12th.
Isaev has spent most of his career at feather and isn't a big puncher, so fits the bill for Warren as an ideal opponent for his big punching super feather Mitchell.

Mitchell had to strip naked to make the 9st 4lb limit , Isaev cam in at 9st 3lb, so maybe if Isaev can get through the first 4-5 rounds the weightmaking that Mitchell has done could have an effect, but with the weigh in being alongtime before the fight it might not have any effect on Mitchell who would be getting rehydrated and fed well.

I expect this one to go longer than alot of Mitchell's fights, if Isaev has come with ambition and is in good condition he is a good boxer, who could push Mitchell harder than he has been lately.

I'm expecting Mitchell to come out blazing in his usual style, but realise that he can't blast this one out and settle behind his boxing to try and break Isaev down, Mitchell on Points or a stoppage in 10-11 rounds

All except Rocky Dean are not that good, Dean is a good little boxer on his day, and when losing to Isaev he was coming off a good performance agsinst Andy Morris.

At the time i seem to remember Rockys trainer saying that Isaev looked good, so he should be able to put up some resistance tonight

Hunter KO Dean 1 if i remember rightly, your gettin ahead of yourself i think with this Dean business.

An easy outing for Mitchell but i could be wrong but i dont think so.

So far Mitchell has been arguably the most protected British prospect around. I hope tonight's opponent is decent, but I am always sceptical whoever they find for him, based on previous opponents.

In fact, the woeful quality of opposition has made me question his potential; if he is half as good as he's made out to be, why not match him with less caution ?

I know what the counter-argument is to that, but I just think that his opposition has been particularly soft. Lets hope tonight is the start of an improvement in that regard

Mitchell's a big puncher?? Since when? He's fought the worst opposition of any British prospect ive ever seen, and still some lasted. A big puncher stops all these guys he's facing and stops them early.

What the fornicate was that?? A cut stoppage for that little nick?? With one round to go?? Total bullshit.

Mitchell is mr right hand. His opponents could wear a blindfold and still land a right hand against him. Its only a matter of time now. They can't protect him forever. The first puncher he faces, its over.

Agree , if that cut had been on Mitchell the fight would never had been stopped in favour of Isaev.
It was an interesting fight up to that point, i'm sure Mitchell would have gone on to win anyway, but he was open to the right hand, something for his corner to work on, imagine if it had been Johansonn bouncing those right hands off Mitchells chin.
But good points were Mitchell carried his power late on and hurt Isaev, and also he didn't become disheartened when things were not going his way in the middle rounds.
He showed that he can pace himself now and still seemed pretty fresh in the 11th round.

I think the criticism of Mitchell has been a bit much. Lots seem to consider him the weaker prospect between himself and Murray.... I do definately disagree.

Sure he isn't defensively as good, but I think he is quicker and as strong and has an edge in power. Arturo Gatti had a similar defensive weakness but had a chin to overcome it and became a 2 time world champion. As long as Mitchell can take the shots well, then whats stopping going futher than Junior titles.

From TV that cut stoppage looked BS.

Mitchell's power is well over rated as others have said and he lacks that spark. He obviousl trains long and hard but I dont think he has the natural talent to make it to the top - he makes too many mistakes and doesnt hit hard enough.

I would favour John Murray over him, but that fight wont happen anytime soon (unfortuantely).

My fecking Sky+ messed up in the 5th, so I missed the rest of the fight.

It was refreshing to see Mitchell in a competetive fight for a change.
He will have learnt alot from what I saw, as he was not having it all his own way for a change, and was having to think a little more, rather than loading up as much as usual.

Glad he came through it (although I usually despise him), more fights like that and he will grow into a top contender!!

Terrible stoppage. Again the ITV commentary team is bought, sold and paid for. Rawlings claims it was stopped "not before time". Duke McKenzie again makes out as if a guy is about to go in round 10 when he gets caught by a decent shot and backs off. He sounds like one of the home fighter's fans everytime. Rawlings is such a company man aswell. Long time since an uncomfortable, red faced Warren had to face genuine questions and his fighter's deficiencies were pointed out on Sky. That would have been called a bogus stoppage by Watt, Nelson , McCrory and Darke but not the ITV boys. I'm really starting to get fed up with McGuigan. You just know what he's going to say everytime. "Good performance....the kid has a long way to go...he has talent....definately a bright future." Yeah okay Barry. Stop reading everything off the hymn sheet. I had to laugh when McGuigan claimed "This kid has only 4 stoppages, but believe me. He can hit." :o I don't believe you Barry because Warren has his arm up your arse and is wearing you like a glove puppet.
Oh and another thing. This fight was hardly advertised. My father checks for bills every Friday and never noticed this one. I only stumbled upon it during the second of the Mitchell fight.
I had to giggle when Mitchell mentioned that he would have to watch right hands because guys like Manny Pac are hard hitters. If those two ever met, I would say a Rosary for Kevin and hide behind the couch. Scary thought. European title level at the very best for Mitchell. Doesn't have the power or skill to go much further. :TU:

Gatti had real power and snap in his shots. Mitchell doesn't, and hell he loads up with every shot and still struggles to hurt these guys.

Murray is clearly the better prospect and I don't think its debatable. Mitchell has zero defence and loses composure when he gets hit. Murray has lots of composure and excellent focus. Mitchell's all flash. A decent boxer is just going to sit back and rip him apart with counters, this guy tonight was doing just that for a few rounds. Can you imagine that lively Portuguese guy Murray fought fighting Mitchell? Ouch!

The only reason he's takin the shots well is because he is yet to fight any sort of puncher. At this moment I don't think either Mitchell or Murray could beat Carl Johannsen. But I would at least give Murray a shot cause he's got a some nice skills with no real glaring holes like Mitchell. With Johannsen's right hand and Mitchell's lack of defence this would not be a pretty sight.

Murray has holes aswell, That Portugese fighter was lively but he wasn't a world champion in the making..... lets not forget if the Youth title wasn't on the line Murray would have lost.

Murray got tagged and HURT by that guy, he isn't that elusive himself and doesn't have the power to suit his style.

Personally I wouldn't bet on either making it to world level, but in a straight fight I think I would favour Mitchell. Yes, Mitchell's power might not be what it is cracked up to be - but he is is stronger and faster than the portugese fighter who gave Murray fits. Your talking about that fight like it showed Murray's potential, I see it as excellent learning fight but shows ALOT of learning needs to be done.... he had a fair few "ouch" moments of his own.

I would definately give the edge in handspeed and power to Mitchell. Perhaps he has shown it in non televised outings, but I've yet to see the boxer in Murray (i.e. back foot, jabs etc). Its just a feeling (cause I haven't seen it from Mitchell) but if Murray is proving too strong, I think Mitchell can revert to a back foot jabbing style.

A couple of years ago, I too would have said Murray - mainly due to strength. Murray has never scaled at Super Feather as a pro. However, Mitchell seems to have grown and physically developed more. Mitchell started his pro career two years ago as a small feather. He is now a MASSIVE Super Feather and I'm not sure Murray's strength advantage is as much as a it about 12-15 months ago.

Murray v Mitchell is a 50/50 fight for me, as Stu said Murray has alot to work on as well, if you add Carl Johansson into the mix as well , we have some great match-ups in the superfeather division.

Just hope some of them get made.

The kid that fought kevin last night is the current Russian FEATHERWEIGHT champion.
He showed that putting presssure on Kevin that he comes apart going Back.
I thought the kid had a great 8th rd only to here John Rawling say i thought that rd was Mitchells :o .
Your right if Carl Johannson had been landing them bombs last night then that would of been good night Kev.
What i cannot put up with is the constant referal to being a genuine world champion in 12 mths time.
Alex Arthur must think wat about me Frank ?
The Columbian that fought Murray has since had 3 fights and 3 kos last time stopping Livinson Ruiz in 3 the same kid who tookSteve foster jnr to the late rds before been kod.
If The Columbian is not that good why have none of the promoters brought him back for any other of or prospects.
Also wen the contest with Muray ended Murray was winning on all 3 judges scorecards.
I would of like to of heard The Sky teams commentry on that fight last night i am sure Smith, Watt, Mcrory, Nelson and Dempsey would of told it how they saw it.

The biggest flaw with Mitchell is that he is relativley easy to hit, and this has been proven by people with a lot less skill than Murray.

The speed in which he is being moved proves he isn't quite the super hot prospect we where led to believe he was.

Still, it's easy to forget he is only 21, because he seems to have been around ages already.

Mitchell will make it to British and most probably European titles, but it is now blatantly clear the only `world` title he`ll get (and hold onto) is the WBU etc

Burns would have an easy night with him and Murray would make it a hard night, but both would get the win over Mitchell.

At the very top level you must have a real ko punch to bail you out if your defence is as bad as Mitchells.

I just see him getting the same WBU title as Khan is being pushed towards.

SKY rejected these crap belts so Mr promoter took them to ITV.....

Yeah, I don't think Mitchell will ever get to world class either. He's still too easy to hit (what is he doing in training?) and his power is only decent. Good European level fighter, but that's about it.

I can see Mitchell becoming the WBU champion, having a shitload of defences against handpicked opposition, before he either eventually loses, or they match him for a more respectable title at the right time, as was done with Warren.

I thought there were quite a few positives in Kevin's performance last night, in fact it is the first time I have been remotely impressed with him. As Twinkle Toes says above, the slow pace of moving him on shows he is not quite the red hot prospect/sure bet that he was originally made out to be.

I think he's got "WBU champ" written all over him. Given his young age, I think he'll have a lengthy reign as WBU champ. He'd get well beaten by the top boys in the division.

Thought Kevin done well when clearly not performing at his best he dug in and ground out a good victory over a talented unbeaten Russian.
I would be very intrested in what sort of amateur record the kid had and I am sure he would give any of Britains top feathers and super feathers a run for there money and may turn some over.
He is still 21 years of age, completing 12 hard rounds in his stride and I am certain Kevin will take a lot from this fight and it will serve him well in the future.

I think it might be vacant. Didn't Nicky Cook give it up recently?
