Boxrec says Dwight Muhammad Qawi fought in 1976 Olympic Trials?

Post by Joson »

It's well known that Qawi had no amateur career. Why, then, does Boxrec indicate he fought Don Carbin in the 1976 Olympic Trials?

Can anyone explain this information?

there are tons of myths around people's amateur careers. how many they won, how many they lost, number of kos, who they beat, etc. the ''press' often reports records that are fabrications

qawi boxed in prison. the result on boxrec could be an error, maybe someone also named dwight braxton? but it also wouldnt surprise me if he had some amateur fights on getting out

bernard hopkins has been said to have no amateur career or only learned to box in prison too when he in fact he started it at 9 and was a jr olympics champ

Boxrec says that Qawi made it to the quarter-finals of the Olympic Trials. If I'm not mistaken, fighters need to have won a regional tournament before progressing to national championships, including the Olympic Trials. There's no information anywhere about Qawi ever winning a regional championship.

If Qawi had won the regionals, I believe it would be well known. Boxrec's data has got to be wrong.

That explains everything. Boxrec's got to fix that data error. Someone should notify the Strefa editors too (they also mistake Dave Braxton for DMQ).

As for Qawi, it turns out he was in Rahway Prison in 1976. He wasn't released until 1978.

He was out before '78. I sparred him in '77 at Joe Frazier's gym. He was getting ready to turn pro when we sparred. He did not fight in the '76 Olympic trials.

Well considering I had not had my first amateur fight yet and weighed around 152 pounds, not good. I came to the gym that day and my trainer said "get ready" which meant I was sparring. So I asked who am I sparring? He said "Benny Briscoe" who had fought Carlos Monzon 2 times, Marvin Hagler as well other boxing greats. So I said are you crazy? So he says well it's not Briscoe but somebody just as good and if you don't want to spar him, go home. It Turns out Qawi was sparring 6 rounds that day, 2 rounds with 3 guys each. I was the 1st one in the ring with him. My trainer got in the ring with us, something he had never done before and told Qawi that I had not had my first fight yet and to go easy on me. Qawi replied as he pushed my trainer away, " I got a white boy here" and the bell rand and he came at me like Joe Frazier trying to rip my head off. I got on my bike jabbing and moving trying to stay away from him but he got me in the corner and double hooked me, body, head and the 2nd hook dropped me. I looked at my trainer like WTF. After Qawi was done sparring, I asked him what he dropped me with and he told me and said I did OK for a guy with no fights yet. Gee thanks Dwight, at least you didn't ko me. lol
