Alright, I heard you the first time!Bercli wrote: ↑06 Mar 2024, 17:25That would just make it an opinion. That's not boxing writing imo. Re: Johnny Nelson
As a boxer Nelson achieved an awful lot...he was also frequently awful to watch ! He should never be forgiven for the DeLeon & Warring fights
As a TV presenter, pundit or whatever he is...he's truly awful, with hardly any talent and just there to shit stir.
Adam Smith brought him into the fold...enough said

You just proved my point, you speak to people, not just sit behind a keyboard. You make contacts, get little snippets. If you have made a living out of 'interviewing a few fighters' I take my hat to you, fair.jamesmcdonnell wrote: ↑06 Mar 2024, 17:16I disagree, but hey. You can see with your own eyes what a fighters' attributes are, it depends on what you consider boxing writing to be about. Some of the best boxing writing is about the psychology of fighting and fighters. I've intereviewed quite a few fighters over the years, and in many cases they don't reveal a great deal.

Nah, definitely didnt make a living, very little money in writing about boxing, unless youre writing for newspapers, or have a big selling book.
I enjoyed most writing really detailed fight reports, where i could almost create a mini play of the fight.
Most fighters sadly were poor interviews, their not geared up to wax lyrical about themselves or their career.
Once interviewed kostya tszyu just before he fought hatton which was pretty cool, dont even hace the article or audio transcript.
I often found i got good results from written intervews steangely, as it gave people time to think about responses. My favourite was Jay Larkin, the head of boxing at HBO.

Re: Johnny Nelson
I was very fortunate to earn a good living from boxing for quite a long time. That was a good few years ago now. The reason I made money was for the exact same reason I mentioned, getting out and about. I agree, there is even less money now unless you are elite,IE Fury,Joshua. I love the sport, best sport in the world imo. But I have to say it has been devalued(boxing journalism) in part by so many so called You tube channels/experts. Soon as that lot started I felt legit journos is were devalued. Admittedly, they are improving standard wise now but in the early days some of them were awful. But the main reason is,unless you toe the line with promoters,pr,even boxers, you can forget it as a serious writer imo.jamesmcdonnell wrote: ↑07 Mar 2024, 03:51 Nah, definitely didnt make a living, very little money in writing about boxing, unless youre writing for newspapers, or have a big selling book.

You were the one who said he was having spats. I don’t follow him online and just wondered who with.
As for stirring, you are the one sharing a private conversation on a forum.

I wish I could remember who it was, but there was an old school journalist who told me he never read press releases and never went to press junkets, or to anything organised by the promoters - he said that if you started trotting out their bullshit, you'd never write about anything of consequence.Bercli wrote: ↑07 Mar 2024, 08:09I was very fortunate to earn a good living from boxing for quite a long time. I agree that a lot of the so called journalism out there now is poorly written sychophantic drivel, and indeed journalism in sports certainly for boxing, has become very very poor indeed, with some obvious exceptions.
There simple isn't enough public interest for there to be any real money in it any more.
I will write another book at some point, I enjoyed my last foray into it, even though i made absolutely bollock all money from it.
Re: Johnny Nelson
I'd write a book , but i can,t spell properly

Re: Johnny Nelson
When Joshua ducked Fury in the summer you wrote on here that he had another fight agreed (which wasn’t true).jamesmcdonnell wrote: ↑07 Mar 2024, 08:49

It certainly was not journalism.
It would do you a favour if I was not around to expose you as a fantasist.

The moral of the story is: STAY AWAY FROM "ANTI" SOCIAL MEDIA ESPECIALLY IF YOU ARE IN THE PUBLIC EYE (eg.Broadcasting and or pumditry)

Company Johnny is so in thrall of his sky paymasters that he’s incapable of giving an honest or unbiased opinion on boxing in general, and anything he says is tainted by this fact, so is near worthless.
Apparently ( I think I read ) he said James Tennyson would beat Gevonta Davis, with a straight face?
