Why are threads getting locked?
Re: Why are threads getting locked?
Will say this Box rec is the only forum i use on the net , suppose i'm a man of habit being one reason , and the fact most other forums i feel i'm reading stuff put on by 12 year olds who are not allowed out when it gets dark , so just like most the dribble on u tube boxing channels i just don't bother

Would you support the idea of getting boxing personalities on here to do a Q&A
Can It work?
Can It work?
Re: Why are threads getting locked?
Zero offence intended towards the quality lads on this forum, but this line was pretty damn funny

Well done Mimmy and the rest of the gentlemen for playing nice, I've never been on another forum before but this place is tops, been a pretty big part of my life for well over 10 years now, looking forward to the AJ/Ngannou card tomorrow night, RBR are when this place is at its best, especially when the traffic's flowing
Re: Why are threads getting locked?
Im a developing, evolving old middle aged guy who wants to see the good in everyone. Sometimes I'm like the ref, splitting up and enforcing rules before you crack on again.handsofstone wrote: ↑07 Mar 2024, 03:20 Well done Mimmy and the rest of the gentlemen for playing nice, I've never been on another forum before but this place is tops, been a pretty big part of my life for well over 10 years now, looking forward to the AJ/Ngannou card tomorrow night, RBR are when this place is at its best, especially when the traffic's flowing
There has to be collaboration though, without collaboration you lose trust.

Re: Why are threads getting locked?
I actually used to conduct a lot of interviews via email, I found that it gave people time to reflect and give more considered answers.Spud wrote: ↑06 Mar 2024, 19:26I am hoping people don’t hold grudges because I see no reason why “ the old school posters” and the new ones can’t make a huge success of this place.
I am going on a campaign to encourage boxing personalities to visit this place and make it as busy as it once was ….
One of the ideas and I am not sure whether it will work here .. Q& A plus interviews … but have them on the British Forum at a specified time. I introduced this on David Hayes Twitter page and it increased his popularity big time.
At the early stage .. I can’t do visual interviews because my speech is f*cked and I have an extremely bad tremor so the visual interviews are a no go.
Thoughts please
I would say though, that this format lends itself to a Q&A type session, perhaps a thread that's only open for a short time, and then is locked by moderators, but can then be viewed.
Obviously people would have to play nice, can't have guests invited on to be insulted, but also it would be good if the people coming on are prepared to maybe answer some more awkward questions.
Maybe get the participants to record a short video introduction.
Re: Why are threads getting locked?
Yeah, no harm in trying I guess though time has moved on now though with how easy it is to do Youtube / Instagram live and the like - so I don't know if it will get huge traffic (particularly of the younger demographic) but no harm in trying.
I think though the changing way we view things will also make it tricky. Boxing is so freaking expensive to watch now, that I now focus on catch up and radio - which is not the same. So my affilation with the younger generation of boxers and personalities would be a lot less. On the flip side, younger boxing fans if listening to a Q and A with... umm say Duke McKenzie would be going "who" as McKenzie doesn't seem to have a massive online presence. Whereas people like my dad would have loved to have heard a Q and A from Henry Cooper through to Naz.

I'm too lazy/busy to write anything, but if I did, it would have to be about Ted Kid Lewis. My Aunt claimed he was a distant relative, but I'm sceptical.jamesmcdonnell wrote: ↑07 Mar 2024, 07:10I think he's still in dulwich, think he lives in Dulwich / Herne Hill way, I did used to have a number for him, but that was some time back. not sure I have it any more.jwfg wrote: ↑07 Mar 2024, 06:59Put me down for a copy.jamesmcdonnell wrote: ↑06 Mar 2024, 19:09 Ive been toying with the idea of writing a book about Danny Williams,![]()

That I would happily buy. His career arc saddens me and I have been trying to ignore it. I'll tell you the story one day of how I first met Spud, and the interaction we had when I started writing for Eastside boxing, - believe me, you won't feel as bad about it all.
Eh spud?
You were known for making excellent contributions for Eastside, and it’s thanks to me you have gone being an excellent writer about our great sport. Instead of slagging me off , get on your hands and knees and thank me for giving you a break
In all seriousness James you are an excellent writer … thank you for your contributions
I think its more than 20 years ago now!!
Ive been toying with the idea of writing a book about Danny Williams, doubt there would be that much money in it, but hes an intruiging character, a man who best Tyson and fought for the heavyweight title who never even wanted to beva fighter.

That's one of the things I don't know how I would tackle, whilst it may not be a particularly inspiring trajectory post Vitali, to leave it out surely is missing out a very large part of the story.Flump wrote: ↑07 Mar 2024, 09:36That I would happily buy. It's hard to know without speaking to Danny also, it depends what you can get him to open up about.

As a punter, the downside has to be covered. I haven't seen an interview with him in years, but he never struck me as silly in terms of a lack of self awareness, in fact he may have had too much. If he'll talk it could be golden, to find out why he just couldn't stop even apparently after school fees had been paid.jamesmcdonnell wrote: ↑07 Mar 2024, 09:42That's one of the things I don't know how I would tackle, whilst it may not be a particularly inspiring trajectory post Vitali, to leave it out surely is missing out a very large part of the story.Flump wrote: ↑07 Mar 2024, 09:36That I would happily buy. Seems he lives in Pollards hill, near croydon, maybe I'll do a buncey, and walk the streets shouting "Has anybody seen Danny?"Flump wrote: ↑07 Mar 2024, 09:54As a punter, the downside has to be covered. I agree, for me, a lot of it is about understanding what went through the fighters heads at various stages of their career.Flump wrote: ↑07 Mar 2024, 09:54As a punter, the downside has to be covered. When I interviewed Magri and talked to him about when he retired, he looked devastated, he said retiring was the worst time of his life, and that it took him a couple of years to get over it, though you could see in his eyes, that when he talked about his career, nothing had ever come close to the thrill of fighting - that's the thing about boxing, what are you ever going to do that's going to compare?
Re: Why are threads getting locked?
Yeah I guess so. And I enjoyed the Magri book very much btw, you're talented.jamesmcdonnell wrote: ↑07 Mar 2024, 09:58I agree, for me, a lot of it is about understanding what went through the fighters heads at various stages of their career.Flump wrote: ↑07 Mar 2024, 09:54As a punter, the downside has to be covered.
