Canelo Alvarez, Jaime Munguia Enter Preliminary Talks For Potential All-Mexico Championship Clash

Jaime Munguia was right on time with one of the most dominant wins of his career.

Boxing Scene has confirmed that the team for the unbeaten former WBO junior middleweight contender has entered significant talks with Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez regarding a future all-Mexico showdown. The development—which was first reported by ESPN Knockout—emerged shortly after Munguia’s one-sided, ninth-round knockout of England’s John Ryder in their January 27 super middleweight fight, after which he expressed his desire to face the division’s undisputed king.

“I'm motivated for the next fight; it's going to be better than this one, and it's going to keep getting bigger,” Munguia said afterward. “We want the best of the best in 168. We are going to be World Champions.

“It would be a great fight amongst Mexicans, and if Canelo gives us the chance, it would be an honor to share the ring with him.”

Guadalajara’s Alvarez (60-2-2, 39 KOs) has yet to announce his next opponent. The industry-wide speculation is that he is due to next appear on May 4 in Las Vegas, though there has not been any official notice of the rumored event.

Talks with Munguia positions Alvarez to potentially enter his first fight with a Golden Boy Promotions-affiliated boxer since his bitter split from the California-based outfit in 2020.

Munguia is co-promoted by Zanfer Boxing and Golden Boy. Alvarez is technically a promotional free agent, though it was widely reported that he entered a multi-fight agreement with Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) last summer.

Boxing Scene has learned that while talks between Mexico’s two biggest current stars have been immediately productive, they remain very much in the preliminary stage. A decision on that front is not expected to come in the coming days, particularly not on Tuesday when Alvarez is due to reveal “an important career announcement” in an exclusive interview on TV Azteca in his native Mexico.

Tijuana’s Munguia (43-0, 34 KOs) is 3-0 in fights above middleweight, including his past two in true super middleweight bouts. He scored a 12th round knockdown of former title challenger Sergiy Derevyanchenko to earn a unanimous decision last June 10 in Boxing Scene’s 2023 Fight of the Year. He followed up with a far more dominant showing versus Ryder (32-7, 18KOs), whom he floored four times en route to a lopsided stoppage victory.

Munguia is currently the number-one contender with the WBO, who previously declared that they would not enforce its mandatory until the end of the year.

Those plans could drastically change if Munguia in fact emerges as the frontrunner to next face Alvarez, who has held two full super middleweight titles since December 2020. He fully unified the division in a span of four fights, defeating three unbeaten titlists—Callum Smith, Billy Joe Saunders and Caleb Plant—to crown the division’s first-ever undisputed champion in November 2021.

Alvarez has since lost to Dmitry Bivol in a WBA light heavyweight before he returned to super middleweight for three successful title defenses with all four major titles at stake. In his most recent outing, Alvarez—a four-division champion and Mexico’s first-ever undisputed champion in the three- or four-belt era—soundly outpointed Houston’s Jermell Charlo over twelve rounds last September 30 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

Prior speculation has placed two-division and current WBC middleweight titlist Jermall Charlo, Jermell’s twin brother, as a potential leading candidate to land the May 4 assignment. Munguia has since entered as an attractive option, whether next or later in the year versus his celebrated countryman.

Canelo Alvarez To Make "Important Announcements About His Career" This Tuesday On TV Azteca

Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez will provide the boxing world with a long-awaited update regarding his next move.

The sport’s undisputed super middleweight king is due to hold court with TV Azteca in his native Mexico on Tuesday. The context of his scheduled appearance only came with a vague preview of what to expect during the exclusive televised interview.

“The undisputed super middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez visits his TV Azteca home to make important announcements about his career,” TV Azteca announced on Sunday through its social media channels.

Many outlets have speculated that Alvarez will reveal the terms of his previously reported—though unconfirmed—return on May 4. An opponent is not yet attached to the date. Alvarez has entered negotiations with Tijuana’s Jaime Munguia (43-0, 34 KOs), though BS.com has confirmed that talks are not nearly far enough along to where that fight would be finalized and confirmed by Tuesday.

Guadalajara’s Alvarez (60-2-2, 39 KOs) has been relatively mum on his career since his last bout, a lopsided unanimous decision victory over Jermell Charlo (35-2-1, 19 KOs) last September 30 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The bout was his first of a widely reported multi-fight deal with Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) and headlined a Showtime Pay-Per-View event.

Showtime has since exited the sport after 37 years of service, with its final show held last December 16 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. PBC entered what was reported as a multi-year, multi-fight deal with Amazon Prime, though just one show has been announced so far—a March 30 PPV event headlined by Tim Tszyu vs. Keith Thurman in a non-title fight from T-Mobile Arena.

It is not yet confirmed that Alvarez’s next fight will be part of that series, although such details figure to come to light on Tuesday.

Alvarez previously entered a one-fight deal with PBC to fully unify the super middleweight division in a November 2021 knockout win over then-unbeaten IBF titlist Caleb Plant. Alvarez held the WBC, WBA and WBO titles ahead of their Showtime PPV headliner from MGM Grand Garden Arena, where he scored an eleventh-round knockout to become the first-ever undisputed super middleweight champ in the division’s 40-year history.

Prior to the win over Charlo, Alvarez fought six of his previous seven bouts attached to Matchroom Boxing. The lone exception during that run from December 2020-May 2023 was his win over Plant.

I mean, he's still under contract with PBC, who have signed a deal with Prime..

This may well not happen, but negotiations have begun.

May just be Jermall Charlo?

Report: Canelo Alvarez will face Jaime Munguia on May 4

Canelo Alvarez has reportedly made his choice after parting ways with PBC.

Canelo Alvarez has reportedly made his choice for a next opponent after parting ways with Premier Boxing Champions, and ESPN Knockout report that Canelo will face fellow Mexican Jaime Munguia on Saturday, May 4.

The fight would almost surely be a DAZN pay-per-view, with Canelo returning to the platform where he’s had all but two of his last 11 fights, dating back to late 2018.

The 33-year-old Canelo (60-2-2, 39 KO) would be defending his undisputed super middleweight championship against the 27-year-old Munguia (43-0, 34 KO), who is a former super welterweight titleholder and has been impressive in wins over Sergiy Derevyanchenko and John Ryder at 168.

Alvarez signed a three-fight deal with Premier Boxing Champions last year, but only did one of the bouts, a September win over Jermell Charlo. The talk had recently been that Canelo would face Jermall Charlo next on May 4, but the belief is that PBC simply don’t have the money on hand now to guarantee Canelo’s money demands, and that a fight with Jermall would not have been something PBC were confident in as a return on the investment.

PBC lost their last TV deal when Paramount pulled Showtime Sports from the boxing game at the end of 2023, and the company signed a deal to produce shows for Amazon’s Prime Video outlet, which at this point appears it will be pay-per-view exclusive. They’ve run no events on the streaming service, and their first comes on March 30.

The shake-up with PBC has clearly resulted in major outlook changes for the brand, and Canelo Alvarez appears to be a luxury they simply can’t afford at this moment.

Alvarez, of course, is boxing’s biggest money-generator still, and he will be welcomed back with open arms by DAZN and most likely wind up working with promoter Eddie Hearn and Matchroom Boxing, with whom he’s had a tremendous relationship after parting ways in an acrimonious split with Golden Boy a few years back.

A fight with Munguia, who is a Golden Boy fighter, could be co-promoted with Golden Boy, or they could, in theory, be left out or step aside, even if only technically so — as in, not involved with the promotion, their logo not on the poster, and so on.

There’s no love lost between Alvarez and Oscar De La Hoya, but also remember that this is boxing. There was no love lost between De La Hoya and promoter Bob Arum, either, and they wound up burying the hatchet eventually. In this sport, if it makes money, grudges go away.

Canelo vs Munguia is currently expected to be finalized in the coming days. Edgar Berlanga, who just won this past weekend, was reportedly the other name in the mix for the May 4 date.

Decent fight for the stages of both mens careers. Munguia looked great against Ryder and he always comes to fight. Canelo on his way down could be a bit more susceptible to Munguia's offence but I think Canelo wins a war late on.

Think Canelo will stop him. And I predict that this will be his last fight at Super Middleweight.

I wonder if he’ll answer that question at all, probably going to get sick of being asked it.

This is a very good fight but not the best.

-mung is now a true 168.
-Probably true prime. 27 i think at the weight is normaly pre prime but for someone with over a decade in the pros and over 40 fights i think its probably prime prime.
-comes to fight.

My main concern is the derev fight. was underwheelming in that... but everyone seems underwheelming vs derev.

Only fights I want to see more than this is for canelo is benevedez (clearly the fight), and bivol at 168 (to remove canelos weight excuse.), and crawford (im just curious)..

all said and done. I predict canelo will KO mung to the body mid rounds.

Benavidez hasn't got that much of a better chance than Munguia against Canelo (slow starter and his figure is open to the feints and body shots of Cinny), but Jaime gets exposed too much and he will pay for this sooner or later

On Thursday, there were reports that Canelo vs Munguia was being finalized, and that it would be Canelo (60-2-2, 39 KOs) working with PBC on a one-fight deal, but that DAZN would also be able to carry the pay-per-view, which really just ups the available outlets to sell it on and seems like a reasonable deal in general.

We have, for instance, seen DAZN and ESPN+ both allowed to sell pay-per-view events in the recent past, and this would be something similar between the two streaming platforms.

Munguia (43-0, 34 KOs) will be challenging Canelo for the latter’s undisputed super middleweight championship.

It has been previously reported that Jaron “Boots” Ennis will defend his IBF welterweight title against Cody Crowley on the undercard.

Yep, agreed.
Munguia hasn’t had real fight since he went life and death with Denis Hogan and almost lost.
No, Ryder was not a real fight.
He looks pudgy, as if he’s a blown up Junior Middle.
He loves to fight so it will be good, but I see Canelo getting him out of there

Munguia’s years of angling for the trophy fish pays off.

Good entertainment value for as long as it lasts, as every Munguia fight is. I can’t fault Canelo for giving the kid a shot now. Munguia will get a similar hand up as FMJ afforded Canelo all those years ago.

Munguia’s stock rises substantially from this fight unless he gets Ngannoued. Even if that happens, he could conceivably retire comfortably.

Munguia could make it very interesting if Canelo has slipped a bit. Kid is tough and he has improved beyond the Neanderthal clubber level.

This is his shot. Here’s hoping he brings it.

BRANDON FIGUEROA-JESSIE MAGDALENO IN PLAY FOR MAY 4 CANELO-MUNGUIA CARD

There is now an answer to the question as to why Brandon Figueroa did not challenge for Rey Vargas’ featherweight title.

The Ring has learned that a crossroads bout is in play between Texas’ Figueroa and Las Vegas native Jessie Magdaleno. The pairing of former 122-pound titleholders is due to land on the undercard of the May 4 PBC on Prime Pay-Per-View event.

Headlining the show, Guadalajara’s Alvarez (60-2-2, 39KOs) will face Tijuana’s Munguia (43-0, 34 KOs) for The Ring and undisputed super middleweight championship. Alvarez, No. 4 pound-for-pound, will defend his Ring 168-pound crown for the seventh time.

Figueroa (24-1-1, 18 knockouts) is The Ring’s No. 4-rated featherweight contender. However, he has not fought since a twelve-round, unanimous decision victory over former WBC featherweight titlist Mark Magsayo (25-2, 17 KOs) last March 4.

The former WBC 122-pound titlist claimed an interim version of the WBC featherweight title after his win over Magsayo. The 27-year-old Weslaco, Texas native was believed to next face Mexico’s Vargas (36-1-1, 22 KOs), No. 3 at 126, in a title consolidation bout. The fight never came into play, which left Figueroa with just one fight in 2023.

Vargas instead faced Ring No. 10 contender Nick Ball (19-0-1, 12 KOs) this past weekend in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The two fought to a twelve-round, split decision draw. Ball was named as the mandatory challenger despite Figueroa’s place as the interim titlist.

Figueroa, 27, is still without a direct path to his second major title. The trade-off is a high profile assignment versus a still-formidable foe.

Magdaleno (29-2, 18 KOs) has not fought since a 12-round points loss to Raymond Ford last April 8 in San Antonio. The setback snapped a four-fight win streak for Magdaleno. That run followed an April 2018 defeat to Isaac Dogboe which ended his WBO 122-pound title reign.

Ford (15-0-1, 8 KOs), No. 6 at 126, went on to win the WBA featherweight title in a 12th round knockout of Otabek Kholmatov.

Magdaleno won the WBO 122-pound title in a Nov. 2016 points victory over Nonito Donaire (42-8, 28 KOs), No. 8 at 118 and a future Hall-of-Famer. He managed one successful defense before the loss to Dogboe.

Figueroa previously held the WBA ‘Regular’ and WBC titles in the 122-pound division. The latter was obtained in a May 2021 seventh-round knockout of then-unbeaten Luis Nery (35-1, 27 KOs; No. 5 at 122). Figueroa lost the WBC belt to Stephen Fulton (21-1, 8 KOs; No. 1 at 122) via majority decision one fight later. The fiercely contested Nov. 2021 unification bout between defending titlists landed high among the year’s best fights.

The bout was the last at 122 for ‘The Heartbreaker,’ who has won two straight at featherweight. His divisional debut was a July 2022 sixth-round knockout of then-unbeaten Carlos Castro in San Antonio. The feat was then followed by the victory over Magsayo.

They would promote it as "the grudge" between Oscar and Canelo. They will make big money.
